{"id":32878,"date":"2023-09-04T11:49:01","date_gmt":"2023-09-04T09:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/?p=187851"},"modified":"2023-09-04T12:39:56","modified_gmt":"2023-09-04T10:39:56","slug":"bbc-radio-3-celebrates-60-years-of-the-cassette","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcmusicmagazine\/rss_feed\/bbc-radio-3-celebrates-60-years-of-the-cassette\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC Radio 3 celebrates 60 years of the cassette"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> Late Junction&#8217;s Casseptember will explore how the new format proved a watershed moment in the democratisation of audio culture <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Steve Wright\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Monday, 04 September 2023 at 09:49 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body> <p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">BBC Radio 3 has announced a month of programming dedicated to the history and legacy of the cassette. <i>Casseptember <\/i>will mark the 60th anniversary of the medium, with the first compact cassette recorder launched at the Funkaustellung (Radio Exhibition) in Germany\u00a0 in August 1963.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Featuring contributions from the likes of Cosey Fanni Tutti, Vashti Bunyan and Aki Onda, as well as archival audio and newly commissioned cassette recordings, Radio 3\u2019s <em>Casseptember<\/em> season will explore how the arrival of the cassette was a watershed moment in the democratisation of audio culture.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a class=\"standard-card-new__article-title\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/bibliotapes-the-scottish-record-label-bringing-classic-novels-to-life-with-soundtracks\/\">Bibliotapes: the Scottish record label bringing classic novels to life with soundtracks<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The season will examine how the format helped to foster local and underground scenes and genres, helping to shape and influence some of the most popular pop, rock, classical and alternative artists of the day. It will also look at the cassette tape\u2019s recent comeback,\u00a0with many labels and independent artists creating highly sought-after cassette-only releases during an era dominated by streaming and online listening.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a class=\"standard-card-new__article-title\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/how-to-digitise-your-cd-and-record-collections\/\">How to digitise your CD and record collections<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Finally, <em>Casseptember<\/em> will also shine a light on how cassette tapes have been used to preserve musical heritage and cultural memory. In conversation with the founders of Syrian Cassette Archives, Mark Gergis and Yamen Mekdad, the duo will reflect on Syria\u2019s rich musical history and how cassettes transformed the ability of Syrians to record and distribute their music. The duo will discuss with Verity Sharp how they are preserving, researching and sharing these stories during a time when much of the country\u2019s recorded repertoire is under threat from the effects of war and displacement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><i>Casseptember <\/i>continues on Radio 3\u2019s <em>Late Junction<\/em> from Friday 1 September to Friday 29 September.
