The song was written to Piaf\u2019s lover, the French boxer Marcel Cerdan, who was killed in an aeroplane crash in 1949, while travelling from Paris to New York to see the singer. A grieving Piaf recorded six months later, in May 1950.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Milord\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>A great example of Piaf as storyteller, this traditional French <strong><a title=\"Chanson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chanson\">chanson<\/a><\/strong> follows a working-class <i>fille du port <\/i>(\u2018girl of the port\u2019) who forms a crush on a dapper, aristocratic Englishman (the title\u2019s \u2018milord\u2019). The narrator plucks up the courage to speak to him \u2013 about love, which makes him cry. But she cheers him up with the song\u2019s rosing finale: \u2018Bravo Milord! With its sighing melodies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/jazz-music-what-it-is-and-how-it-evolved\/\"><strong>jazz<\/strong><\/a> rhythms and moving lyrics (<em>\u2018<\/em><span class=\"ReferentFragmentdesktop__Highlight-sc-110r0d9-1 jAzSMw\"><em>Quand il me prend dans ses bras \/ Qu\u2019il me parle tout bas \/Je vois la vie en rose\u2019<\/em> \u2013\u00a0 \u2018When he takes me in his arms \/ When he speaks softly to me \/ I see life in pink\u2019),<\/span> \u2018La Vie en rose\u2019 became a huge hit.<\/p>\n<p>The song won admirers around the world including the US where, in 1950, no fewer than seven versions reached the <i>Billboard<\/i> charts. Artists covering the song included Bing Crosby, Dean Martin and Louis Armstrong \u2013 the latter one of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/best-jazz-singers-ever\/\"><strong>best jazz singers of all time<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"\/>More recently, \u2018La Vie en rose\u2019 has been covered by the likes of Grace Jones and Bette Midler (both 1977), Donna Summer (1993) and Lady Gaga (2018).
