She also blogs about parenting for Huffington Post.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Here, Georgia discusses five key pieces of music that have shaped her.<\/strong> <\/p><h2 id=\"h-georgia-mann-s-musical-choices\">Georgia Mann&#8217;s musical choices<\/h2><h3 id=\"h-ennio-morricone-the-mission-original-soundtrack\">Ennio Morricone: <em>The Mission <\/em>original soundtrack<\/h3><p>One of my best and earliest musical memories was being driven through France from Calais to the Pyrenees in my dad&#8217;s VW Golf with the roof down and \u2018River\u2019 from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/ennio-morricone-1928-2020\">Ennio Morricone<\/a>&#8216;s <\/strong>soundtrack to <em>The Mission<\/em> on the car stereo all the way. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/five-of-the-best-soundtracks-by-ennio-morricone\">Ennio Morricone: five best soundtracks<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/tv-and-film-music\/best-film-scores\">The best film scores of all time<\/a><\/strong> <\/li><\/ul><p>I was about six and it was the first time my dad and I had spent much time alone \u2013 my mum flew separately with my baby brother. I associate it with fields full of sunflowers and France whizzing past the car window. But also as the first piece of music which really had my pulse racing.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe title=\"The Mission Theme (Ennio Morricone)\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gonKhSIBP54?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h3 id=\"h-bizet-carmen\">Bizet: <em>Carmen<\/em><\/h3><p>I\u2019m a sucker for a melody and, as melodists go, it\u2019s hard to beat <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/georges-bizet\">Bizet<\/a><\/strong>. As an eight-year-old I listened over and over again to a cassette of <em>Carmen<\/em>\u2019s \u2018L&#8217;amour est un oiseau rebelle\u2019 and tried to record myself on my ghetto-blaster using the same sort of voice I heard on the recording. I had big, curly dark hair and my grandmother used to call me a \u2018little Carmen\u2019! <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/bizet-s-carmen-what-listen-next\">Bizet&#8217;s <em>Carmen<\/em>: what to listen to next<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>At nine I had an unusually overdeveloped voice, big and quite vibrato-laden, and I remember singing the \u2018<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/pie-jesu-lyrics\">Pie Jesu<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/gabriel-faure\">Faur\u00e9<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/best-recordings-faures-requiem\">Requiem<\/a><\/strong> with the choir and orchestra at my primary school, Woodside Park in Finchley. It\u2019s very exposed, especially the first note you come in on; I remember being absolutely terrified, but just loving the feeling of singing. <\/p><p>I thought I might do it professionally, but by my late teens I was partying pretty hard and not looking after my voice. Later, I sang a bit at Cambridge, but <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/countertenor-iestyn-davies-listening-to-sad-music-is-like-looking-at-a-soap-opera-or-car-crash-on-tv\">Iestyn Davies<\/a><\/strong> was in my year and I saw the sort of dedication you would need to be a professional soloist. I was far too lazy to give my whole life over to it!<\/p><h3 id=\"h-loesser-guys-and-dolls\">Loesser: <em>Guys and Dolls<\/em><\/h3><p>My grandma was a very glam Irishwoman with a lovely voice, and she loved musicals. When she babysat me on Saturday nights, she&#8217;d sing me Shirley Temple songs or \u2018A Bushel and a Peck\u2019 from<strong> Frank Loesser<\/strong>\u2019<strong>s<\/strong> <em>Guys and Dolls<\/em>. I played Miss Adelaide in a school production and that song stayed with me.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/best-stage-musicals-of-all-time\">Best stage musicals of all time<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Years later my grandma had dementia and on the last day of her life I sat with her and sang this song, and it has had a bit of a sacred feel for me ever since. I don\u2019t think I had ever appreciated the sheer power of music in human terms \u2013 if ever there was confirmation that music occupies a special place in our brains and souls that was it.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-beethoven-symphony-no-9-choral\">Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 &#8216;Choral&#8217;<\/h3><p>Relatively early in my BBC Radio 3 career I produced the BBC Proms performance of <strong>Beethoven<\/strong>&#8216;<strong>s<\/strong> Symphony No. 9 by the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, National Youth Choir of GB and Daniel Barenboim. It was 27 July\u00a02012, the opening of the London Olympics, and it\u2019s a night ingrained in my memory. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 | Daniel Barenboim &amp; the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra (complete symphony)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HljSXSm6v9M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>The music, that particular moment in London, that particular orchestra, everything felt full of hope and promise. The Proms have become a huge part of my life and I think I really fell in love with them that night. I couldn&#8217;t live without them now.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-serge-gainsbourg-le-poinconneur-des-lilas\">Serge Gainsbourg: &#8216;Le Poin\u00e7onneur des Lilas&#8217;<\/h3><p>When I first started presenting Radio 3 Breakfast, a listener requested &#8216;Le Poin\u00e7onneur des Lilas&#8217; by<strong> Serge Gainsbourg<\/strong>. I&#8217;d never heard it before and it was an absolute revelation to me. My grandfather was French, and there&#8217;s always been a strong connection to France throughout my upbringing. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/most-famous-french-singers-of-all-time\">French singers: ten of the best<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/the-history-of-french-art-song\">A history of French art song<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>That song captured something so essentially Gallic for me, and I adored the collisions with classical music \u2013 in his songs I can hear <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/franz-liszt\">Liszt<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/frederic-chopin\">Chopin<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/antonin-dvorak\">Dvo\u0159\u00e1k<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 I now have a bit of a Serge obsession and loved Jeremy Allen&#8217;s <em>Relax Baby Be Cool<\/em> biography of him. <\/p><p>I&#8217;m heading to Paris soon and will be dragging my friend on a pilgrimage to\u00a05 bis rue Verneuil, Serge&#8217;s home. I love that I acquired a new passion via one of our listeners.
