They add hugely to our understanding of a composer&#8217;s wishes and to our sense of how music should sound. Music with the instruction <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-does-allegro-mean-in-music\">Allegro<\/a><\/strong> should be played at a brisk, upbeat pace. The first movements of many Classical and Romantic symphonies, for example, carry an <em>Allegro<\/em> marking.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-andante\">Andante<\/h4><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-andante\">Andante<\/a><\/strong> is Italian for &#8216;walking&#8217; and means, you&#8217;ve guessed it, that the music should be played at a walking pace \u2013 neither slow nor fast. Most common in opera, arias also occur in\u00a0oratorios\u00a0and\u00a0cantatas. There are also stand-alone\u00a0concert arias.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-atonal\">Atonal<\/h4><p>Music that lacks a tonal centre, or key. The 20th century was a particularly rich time for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-atonal-music\">atonal<\/a><\/strong> music \u2013 including many works by composers from the Second Viennese School, such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/arnold-schoenberg\">Schoenberg<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/alban-berg\">Berg<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/anton-von-webern\">Webern<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0<\/p><h3 id=\"LetterB\">Musical terms beginning with B<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-bar\">Bar<\/h4><p>Also known as a measure, a bar is a section of music divided from its neighbours by vertical lines, known as<strong> <\/strong>barlines.<strong> <\/strong>The length of a bar, measured in number of\u00a0note values, is normally indicated by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-is-a-time-signature\"><strong>time signature<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 4\/4, 6\/8, etcetera.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-barcarolle\">Barcarolle<\/h4><p>\u2018Barca\u2019 in Italian means boat, and a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-barcarolle\">barcarolle<\/a><\/strong> is a boating song \u2013 typically one sung by Venetian gondoliers. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/felix-mendelssohn\">Mendelssohn<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/frederic-chopin\">Chopin<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/gabriel-faure\">Faur\u00e9<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/jacques-offenbach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Offenbach<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0all composed barcarolles.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-baritone\">Baritone<\/h4><p>One of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/classical-voice-types\">classical voice types<\/a><\/strong>, the baritone is the middle section of the male vocal range, between tenor (upper range) and bass (lower range), though typically overlapping at either or both ends. We thought hard and came up with a list of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/best-baritones\">best baritones of all time<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-baroque\">Baroque<\/h4><p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/baroque-music-guide\">Baroque<\/a><\/strong> period in art and music dates approximately from 1600 to 1750. Most famous Baroque composers include\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/classic-admin.int.thisisglobal.com\/composers\/monteverdi\/\"><strong>Monteverdi<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/composers\/purcell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Purcell<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/classic-admin.int.thisisglobal.com\/composers\/jean-philippe-rameau\/\"><strong>Rameau<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/composers\/bach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Bach<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/composers\/vivaldi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Vivaldi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/composers\/handel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Handel<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-bel-canto\">Bel canto<\/h4><p>A term from the world of opera, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-bel-canto\">bel canto<\/a><\/strong> is a style of operatic writing designed designed to show off the beauty of the voice.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-bolero\">Bolero<\/h4><p>A Spanish dance, set to music most memorably by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/maurice-ravel\">Ravel<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p><h3 id=\"LetterC\">Musical terms beginning with C<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-cadenza\">Cadenza<\/h4><p>Italian for \u2018cadence\u2019, a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-is-a-cadenza\">cadenza<\/a><\/strong> is essentially an ornamental passage for a soloist, usually in a fairly\u00a0free\u00a0rhythmic\u00a0style, and often allowing for some virtuosic\u00a0playing. During a cadenza, the accompaniment\u00a0will rest, or play a sustained note or chord. <\/p><p>Many cadenzas are designed to be improvised by the soloists, such as those in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/ludwig-van-beethoven\">Beethoven<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 3 and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/dmitri-shostakovich\">Shostakovich<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Violin Concerto No. 1. <\/p><h4 id=\"h-cantata\">Cantata<\/h4><p>A choral piece that may have either sacred or secular lyrics, a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-is-a-cantata\">cantata<\/a><\/strong> features both solo voices and instrumental accompaniment. Bach wrote many famous cantatas, including &#8216;Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme&#8217; (\u2018Sleepers awake\u2019) and &#8216;Wie sch\u00f6n leuchtet der Morgenstern&#8217; (&#8216;How lovely shines the morning star&#8217;).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Bach - Cantata Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme BWV 140 - Van Veldhoven | Netherlands Bach Society\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DqZE54i-muE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h4 id=\"h-capriccio\">Capriccio<\/h4><p>From the Italian &#8216;caprice&#8217; and also evoking our word \u2018capricious\u2019, a \u2018caprice\u2019 is a high-spirited, generally short piece of music, such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/nikolay-rimsky-korsakov\">Rimsky-Korsakov<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Capriccio espagnol<\/em>.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-chamber-music\">Chamber music<\/h4><p>A piece of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-chamber-music\">chamber music<\/a><\/strong> will typically contain parts for anything between two and nine players &#8211; although, as there are also chamber orchestras, the dividing lines between chamber music and orchestral music can become somewhat blurry.\u00a0 <\/p><p>Common chamber forms include the sonata (typically for piano plus one other instrument, e.g. violin), trio (typically piano, cello, violin), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-string-quartet\">string quartet<\/a><\/strong>, and piano quintet (piano plus string quartet).<\/p><h4 id=\"h-chanson\">Chanson<\/h4><p>Meaning &#8216;song&#8217; in French, <em>chanson<\/em> denotes a whole tradition of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/the-history-of-french-art-song\">French song<\/a><\/strong>, from Medieval times to 20<sup>th<\/sup>-century exponents such as Yves Montand and Edith Piaf.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/most-famous-french-singers-of-all-time\">Most famous French singers of all time<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h4 id=\"h-chord\">Chord<\/h4><p>A musical layering of two or more notes played simultaneously. Famous examples include Wagner&#8217;s &#8216;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/tristan-chord-explained\">Tristan Chord<\/a><\/strong>&#8216; and the &#8216;\u201c&#8217;Rite of Spring chord&#8217;,\u00a0an E\u266d chord sounding over an F\u266d major chord, heard during the &#8216;Dance of the Adolescents&#8217; in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/igor-stravinsky\">Stravinsky<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s epoch-making ballet <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/stravinskys-rite-spring-guide-and-best-recordings\"><strong>The Rite of Spring<\/strong><\/a><\/em>.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-chromatic\">Chromatic<\/h4><p>A chromatic scale uses 12 notes, and the chromatic notes are those notes that do not belong to the diatonic scale in which the music is being played. To take a simple example, the scale of C major uses only the white notes on the piano: so all the black keys (the sharps and flats) will be the chromatic notes here.<\/p><p>More broadly, chromatic music colours or embellishes the tones of the major and minor scales. Composers particularly noted for their use of chromaticism\u00a0include <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/anton-bruckner\">Bruckner<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/cesar-franck\">Franck<\/a><\/strong>, Richard <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/richard-strauss\">Strauss<\/a><\/strong>, Wagner, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/alexander-scriabin\">Scriabin<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-clef\">Clef<\/h4><p>Meaning \u2018key\u2019 in French, a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-clef\">clef<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is a\u00a0musical symbol\u00a0that provides the \u2018key\u2019 to reading the notes on a musical\u00a0stave. The presence of a treble, alto or bass clef helps the performer decode the score. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/musical-keys-explained\">Musical keys explained<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h4 id=\"h-coda\">Coda<\/h4><p>Another Italian term, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-coda\">coda<\/a><\/strong> means &#8216;tail&#8217;, and refers to the tail end of a piece of music, usually unrelated to the main structure if the work.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-coloratura\">Coloratura<\/h4><p>Meaning &#8216;colouring&#8217; in Italian, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-coloratura\">coloratura<\/a><\/strong> refers to the colour, or decorative style, that certain singers employ. Coloratura sopranos sing in a highly ornamented style.\u00a0Dame Joan Sutherland was a famous example.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-concerto\">Concerto<\/h4><p>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/what-concerto\">concerto<\/a><\/strong> features a soloist and an ensemble (typically, though, not always, an orchestra). Piano concertos and violin concertos are the most famous examples; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/sergey-rachmaninov\">Rachmaninov<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/best-recordings-rachmaninovs-piano-concerto-no-2\">Piano Concerto No. 2<\/a><\/strong> is one of the most famous concertos in the repertoire.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-concerto-grosso\">Concerto grosso<\/h4><p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-concerto-grosso\">concerto grosso<\/a><\/strong> was a common form of orchestral music during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/top-10-baroque-composers\/\"><strong>Baroque<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0era of music, around 1600-1750, although the form has also inspired other composers since then, particularly during the\u00a0Neoclassical period. In the 20th century, composers including Bohuslav <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/bohuslav-martinu\">Martinu<\/a><\/strong>, Alfred Schnittke and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/philip-glass\">Philip Glass<\/a><\/strong> wrote their own modern interpretations of the concerto grosso form. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/the-brilliance-of-philip-glass-seven-leading-musicians-discuss-his-style-and-influence\">The brilliance of Philip Glass<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>The concerto grosso is most notable for the contrast it presents between a small group of soloists (the\u00a0<em>concertino<\/em>) and an accompanying full orchestra (the\u00a0<em>ripieno<\/em>).<\/p><h4 id=\"h-contralto\">Contralto<\/h4><p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-contralto\">contralto<\/a><\/strong> is the lowest female\u00a0voice type, pitched between the mezzo-soprano and male tenor ranges. Composers have often given contralto roles something of a matronly attitude. <\/p><p>Contralto falls within the alto range and is the lowest range of female voices, while mezzo-sopranos are somewhere between altos and sopranos, not being able to hit the lowest notes of the former range nor the highest notes of the latter.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-counterpoint\">Counterpoint<\/h4><p>A style of composition in which voices interweave like the strands in a cable, or pull against each other like the arc and cord of a fully tensed bow.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-countertenor\">Countertenor<\/h4><p>Male singers who are able to manipulate their vocal cords to sing in the higher registers \u2013 i.e., those above the range of a tenor \u2013 are known as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-countertenor\">countertenors<\/a><\/strong>. Countertenors are, give or take, able to sing the same range of notes as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/six-best-contraltos-all-time\/\"><strong>female contralto<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and mezzo-soprano singers. <\/p><p>Well known countertenors include <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/reginald-mobley\">Reginald Mobley<\/a><\/strong> (who performed at the Coronation) and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/countertenor-iestyn-davies-listening-to-sad-music-is-like-looking-at-a-soap-opera-or-car-crash-on-tv\">Iestyn Davies<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-crescendo\">Crescendo<\/h4><p>You\u2019ll often hear something like, \u2018the noise built to a crescendo\u2019, or \u2018the argument reached a crescendo\u2019.\u00a0This is common \u2013 but wrong. In music, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-is-a-crescendo\">crescendo<\/a><\/strong> is the growing, not the point to which one grows; it is the ascent towards the summit, not the summit itself.<\/p><h3 id=\"LetterD\">Musical terms beginning with D<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-descant\">Descant<\/h4><p>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-a-descant\">descant<\/a><\/strong> is a treble line that runs in counterpoint to the principal melody. It was in the 20th century that the word \u2018descant\u2019 became associated with high soprano (or \u2018treble\u2019) lines soaring above hymns \u2013 especially at carol concerts.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-diminuendo\">Diminuendo<\/h4><p>Italian for &#8216;diminishing&#8217;, diminuendo is a dynamic instruction meaning to gradually play quieter \u2013 so, the opposite of crescendo above.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-dynamics\">Dynamics<\/h4><p>When we talk about the dynamics in a piece of music (or a performance), we\u2019re referring to the spectrum of volume \u2013 the variations in loudness from its quieter and louder moments. Plenty of works feature broad dynamic range \u2013 a few examples are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/bela-bartok\">Bart\u00f3k<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Concerto for Orchestra, most <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/gustav-mahler\">Mahler<\/a><\/strong> and Shostakovich symphonies, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/pyotr-ilyich-tchaikovsky\">Tchaikovsky<\/a><\/strong> Symphony No. 6 \u2018<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/tchaikovskys-symphony-no-6-pathetique-brings-his-life-to-a-close\">Path\u00e9tique<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/jean-sibelius\">Sibelius<\/a><\/strong> Symphony No. 5.<\/p><h3 id=\"LetterE\">Musical terms beginning with E<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-ensemble\">Ensemble<\/h4><p>A group of people performing instrumental and\/or vocal works. A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/worlds-best-choirs\">choir<\/a><\/strong>, an orchestra (full or chamber orchestra), a string quartet \u00a0&#8211; all are examples of ensembles.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-etude\">Etude<\/h4><p>French for &#8216;study&#8217;, an \u00e9tude is an instrumental piece that has been composed specifically to\u00a0improve or test certain techniques. Chopin and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/franz-liszt\">Liszt<\/a><\/strong> both composed\u00a0challenging \u00e9tudes for the piano.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/five-essential-works-liszt\">Five essential Liszt works<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h3 id=\"LetterF\">Musical terms beginning with F<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-flat\">Flat<\/h4><p>A flat symbol (\u266d)\u00a0indicates that the note that comes after it should be lowered by a semitone. Flat can also mean that a note is out of tune, sounding lower than it should in this case.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-forte\">Forte<\/h4><p>Italian for &#8216;strong&#8217;, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-forte-in-music\">forte<\/a><\/strong> is a musical term that means \u2018loud\u2019. Forming part of a piece\u2019s dynamic range, forte is usually abbreviated to a lowercase letter \u2018f\u2019 on a musical score and placed below the stave (or staff) it applies to. It may appear at the beginning of a score or later in a piece, to signify that that section of music should be played with an increase in volume, compared with other sections.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-fugue\">Fugue<\/h4><p>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-fugue\">fugue<\/a><\/strong> is music written for several imitative parts which, entering at staggered stages, join together to create a harmonic whole. Since the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/medieval-music-guide\">Middle Ages<\/a><\/strong>, and the first flowering of notated music, composers have striven beyond simple tune-plus-accompaniment.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/best-medieval-composers\">Best medieval composers<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h3 id=\"LetterG\">Musical terms beginning with G<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-gavotte\">Gavotte<\/h4><p>An old French dance in quadruple metre. To establish the feel of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-gavotte\">gavotte<\/a><\/strong>, listen to the third movement, \u2018Gavotta\u2019, from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/sergey-prokofiev\">Prokofiev<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0<em>Classical<\/em>\u00a0Symphony. Prokofiev spells it out with almost didactic clarity.<\/p><p>It\u2019s a dance in four beats to a bar, but with a longish up-beat: two full beats to be exact. Prokofiev makes the rhythmic pattern unmissable by having only violins and violas on the up-beat \u2013\u00a0<em>dada-dada<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 then bringing in the full woodwind and strings on the down-beat \u2013\u00a0<em>DA-da da-da<\/em>.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-giocoso\">Giocoso<\/h4><p>Meaning &#8216;playful&#8217; or &#8216;cheerful&#8217; in Italian, a &#8216;giocoso&#8217; instruction means that the piece or section should be played in a jolly, upbeat manner. <\/p><h4 id=\"h-glissando\">Glissando<\/h4><p>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/discovering-music-glissando\">glissando<\/a><\/strong> is a musical &#8216;slide&#8217;. The term &#8216;glissando&#8217; comes from the French\u00a0<em>glisser<\/em>, which literally means &#8216;to slide&#8217;. The performer will slide from one pitch to the next.<\/p><p>As famously produced by The Clangers\u2019 space-mouse-like creatures\u2019 distinctive up-and-down piping sounds. Not to be confused with Portamento, see below.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-gregorian-chant\">Gregorian chant<\/h4><p>A form of sacred song in Latin (and occasionally Greek), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-gregorian-chant\">Gregorian chant<\/a><\/strong> has been employed within the Roman Catholic Church for centuries. From the start, Gregorian chant has had two key distinguishing features:<\/p><ul><li>It is unaccompanied, meaning that there are no musical instruments accompanying the singing<\/li><li>It is monophonic, which means that there is just one melodic line followed by all the singers. This contrasts with later religious and secular music, in which the different voices (soprano, alto, etcetera) may sing different, although harmonising, vocal lines.<\/li><\/ul><h3 id=\"LetterH\">Musical terms beginning with H<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-harmony\">Harmony<\/h4><p>In music, a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-harmony-in-music\">harmony<\/a><\/strong> refers to two or more complementary notes played or sung at the same time. For example, a choir may sing in harmony, with one section singing the melody while other sections sing the accompanying harmony.<\/p><p>As another example, when playing the piano, the right hand will most likely play the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-melody\">melody<\/a><\/strong> (the main recognisable tune), while the left hand will simultaneously play complementary notes or chords that work with the key and melody, and therefore create the harmony.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-humoresque\">Humoresque<\/h4><p>As its name indicates, a humoresque is a\u00a0piece of music with a humorous feel. Notable compositions bearing the &#8216;humoresque&#8217; moniker have been written by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/robert-schumann\">Schumann<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/antonin-dvorak\">Dvo\u0159\u00e1k<\/a><\/strong> and Rachmaninov.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-hymn\">Hymn<\/h4><p>A song of religious worship. However, if you\u2019ve ever listened to someone singing or practising the violin and felt the need to stick your fingers in your ears, it\u2019s likely due to poor intonation, leading to the music sounding out of tune.<\/p><p>Intonation is all to do with the frequency of sound \u2013 how\u00a0flat or sharp a note\u00a0is \u2013 and therefore relates to the accuracy of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/what-ispitch\/\"><strong>pitch<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><h3 id=\"LetterK\">Musical terms beginning with K<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-key\">Key<\/h4><p>A key in music is the principal group of notes that gives any piece of music its harmonic building blocks. The main notes used in a song are usually all from one particular\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-scale-in-music\/\"><strong>scale<\/strong><\/a>, and this is where we name the song\u2019s key from.<\/p><p>The key that most music learners come across first is the key of C major. That\u2019s because the scale of C major uses no\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/what-is-the-difference-between-a-sharp-and-a-flat-note\/\"><strong>sharp or flat notes<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 it simply goes C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. That means no need to use the black notes on the keyboard \u2013 only the white ones.<\/p><h3 id=\"LetterL\">Musical terms beginning with L<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-landler\">L\u00e4ndler<\/h4><p>A dance in triple time, once popular in Bavaria, Austria and Switzerland, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-is-a-landler\">l\u00e4ndler<\/a><\/strong> form comes up in the fast movements of some Bruckner and Mahler symphonies, and a few Schubert piano sonatas. <\/p><h4 id=\"h-largo\">Largo<\/h4><p>From the Italian for \u2018wide\u2019 or &#8216;broad&#8217;, the instruction \u2018<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-islargo\">largo<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 simply means that the music should be played at a slow (or \u2018broad\u2019) tempo. Typically, at around 45-50 beats per minute (bpm).<\/p><h4 id=\"h-legato\">Legato<\/h4><p>This one comes from the<strong> <\/strong>Italian for &#8216;joined&#8217;, and it instructs the conductor and performers that a series of notes should be played smoothly, or joined up, rather than disconnected (see \u2018staccato\u2019, below).<\/p><h4 id=\"h-leggiero\">Leggiero<\/h4><p>(Italian: &#8216;lightly&#8217;). &#8216;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/leggiero-music-definition\">Leggiero<\/a><\/strong>&#8216; on a musical score is an instruction to play lightly and without force.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-leitmotif\">Leitmotif<\/h4><p>A short, recurring musical phrase, usually associated with a character, idea, event or object. A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-is-a-leitmotif\">leitmotif<\/a><\/strong> is, if you like, the musical equivalent of branding. Wagner used the technique extensively in his music dramas.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-lento\">Lento<\/h4><p>(Italian: &#8216;slow&#8217;). You may have seen the word &#8216;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/lento-music-definition\">lento<\/a><\/strong>&#8216; written at the start of a score and wondered what it means \u2013 it\u2019s the term used in music to indicate a piece should be played with a very slow tempo (around 40-45 bpm, slower than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-adagio-in-music\/\"><strong>adagio<\/strong><\/a> and even largo).<\/p><h4 id=\"h-libretto\">Libretto<\/h4><p>Italian for &#8216;little book&#8217;, a libretto is the text of an opera or vocal work (as opposed to the music), and was traditionally printed in a small book.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-lied-lieder\">Lied \/ lieder<\/h4><p>German for &#8216;song&#8217;), a lied (singular) or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-are-lieder\">lieder<\/a><\/strong> (plural) is a song in the German tradition. Schumann, Brahms, Wolff, Mahler and Richard Strauss all composed extensively in the lieder form. Perhaps the master lieder composer was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/franz-schubert\">Schubert<\/a><\/strong>, with his masterful song cycles such as the bleakly evocative <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/best-recordings-schuberts-winterreise\">Winterreise<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (&#8216;Winter&#8217;s journey&#8217;).<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/the-best-lieder-ever-written\">The best Lieder of all time<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/the-best-recordings-of-mahlers-ruckert-lieder\">The best recordings of Mahler&#8217;s <em>R\u00fcckert Lieder<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-listen-after-schuberts-winterreise\">What to listen to after Schubert&#8217;s <em>Winterreise<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h3 id=\"LetterM\">Musical terms beginning with M<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-madrigal\">Madrigal<\/h4><p>A vocal composition originating in 14th-century Italy. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-is-a-madrigal\">Madrigals<\/a><\/strong> are usually of a secular nature, and became very popular in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/a-guide-to-renaissance-music\">Renaissance<\/a><\/strong> and early Baroque periods.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-major\">Major<\/h4><p>A scale which corresponds on the piano to all the white notes, C to C. A C major triad chord consists of the notes: C, E, and G. Generally, major keys sound &#8216;happy&#8217; while minor keys sound &#8216;sad&#8217;.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-melody\">Melody<\/h4><p>Perhaps the most recognisable element that makes up music, a melody is a distinctive series of notes played in a fixed sequence.<\/p><p>Melodies are typically simple to remember and reproduce. For example, &#8216;Happy Birthday&#8217;, &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/god-save-the-queen-lyrics\/\"><strong>God Save the King<\/strong><\/a>&#8216; and &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/frere-jacques-lyrics\/\"><strong>Fr\u00e8re Jacques<\/strong><\/a>&#8216; all have instantly recognisable melodies (or tunes) that are also easy to hum along to.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-minuet\">Minuet<\/h4><p>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-minuet\">minuet<\/a><\/strong> is an elegant dance in triple time, originally popular in 17th- and 18th-century France.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-mode\">Mode<\/h4><p>Modes are a series of seven musical scales, each derived from the diatonic scale \u2013 meaning they have seven notes and include two intervals that are semitones (half steps) and five intervals that are tones (whole steps). We can&#8217;t quite do full justice to them here, so read Stephen Johnson&#8217;s excellent explanation of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/modes-in-music-what-they-are-and-how-they-are-used-in-music\">musical modes<\/a><\/strong> to get the full picture. <\/p><h4 id=\"h-motif\">Motif<\/h4><p>Within a piece of music, a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/motif-in-music-meaning\">motif<\/a><\/strong> is the term used to describe a short section with a distinct identity (a complete musical \u2018idea\u2019 or \u2018thought\u2019) that is found throughout, and is characteristic of, the whole composition \u2013 the piece\u2019s \u2018calling card\u2019.<\/p><p>Motifs can be harmonic, melodic or rhythmic (or they may contain a combination of these elements) and are considered to be the smallest of the \u2018building blocks\u2019 \u2013 the recognisable, reoccurring themes and phrases \u2013 that make up a composition.<\/p><h3 id=\"LetterN\">Musical terms beginning with N<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-natural\">Natural<\/h4><p>This refers, simply, to a note which is neither sharp nor flat.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-neoclassical\">Neoclassical<\/h4><p>Favoured by early\/mid-20th-century composers including Stravinsky, Ravel, Martin\u016f and Hindemith, Neoclassicism looked back to the Classical and Baroque eras for inspiration. Stravinsky&#8217;s <em>Symphony of Psalms<\/em>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/ottorino-respighi\">Respighi<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s <em>Ancient Airs and Dances<\/em> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/paul-hindemith\">Hindemith<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/hindemiths-mathis-der-maler-symphony-guide-best-recordings\">Mathis der Maler<\/a><\/strong><\/em> symphony are all, in their slightly different ways, examples of a Neoclassical style. <\/p><h4 id=\"h-nocturne\">Nocturne<\/h4><p>As the name suggests, a nocturne is a piece of classical music with something of a nocturnal atmosphere. Now is not the time to get experimental and start improvising with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-tempo-in-music\/\"><strong>tempo<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and dynamics, nor should you suddenly decide that elaborate piano solo in the middle of the piece isn\u2019t really necessary. Obbligato means you are obliged to play the score as it is written\u2026 or else!<\/p><p>Obbligato is therefore the opposite of the direction \u2018ad lib\u2019, where the player is able to freestyle and improvise.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-octave\">Octave<\/h4><p>An <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/octave-meaning\">octave<\/a><\/strong> is the term used to describe the run of eight notes included in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-scale-in-music\/\"><strong>scale<\/strong><\/a>, going between two notes with the same name. Using the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/musical-keys-explained\/\"><strong>musical key<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of C major as an example, there is another C both an octave below and an octave above middle C, and so on: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-octet\">Octet<\/h4><p>Like quartet, an octet is both an ensemble of performers (in this case, eight), and a piece of music written for that ensemble &#8211; e.g. Schubert&#8217;s or Mendelssohn&#8217;s Octets.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Mendelssohn: Octet in E-flat major, Op. 20 - Janine Jansen - International Chamber Music Festival HD\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Vw1kcQ-QbZw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p\/><h4 id=\"h-ondes-martenot\">Ondes Martenot<\/h4><p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-ondes-martenot\">Ondes Martenot<\/a><\/strong> is an electronic instrument invented in 1928 by Maurice Martenot. It has been used by composers including Honegger, Schmitt, Ibert and, perhaps most famously,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/olivier-messiaen\/\">Messiaen<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p><p>The Ondes Martenot is made up of two units: the main section is made up of a keyboard and pull-wire operated by a ribbon controller for the index finger. The keys are capable of slightly shifting, which has the effect of moving the pitch. Sliding the ribbon with the index finger creates glissando sweeps and expressive portamentos.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/six-best-bagpipe-tunes\/\"><strong>Six of the best bagpipe tunes<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>The left-hand uses the other unit of the instrument, which has controls accessed from a pull-out drawer that adapt articulation, dynamics and tone.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-operetta\">Operetta<\/h4><p>A form of light opera, both in terms of its subject matter and music. Unlike opera, operetta usually contains dialogue. Operetta is not the same thing as comic opera, even though <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-operetta\">operetta<\/a><\/strong> is, or at least aspires to be, comic.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-was-the-first-opera-ever-written\">When was the first opera ever written?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h4 id=\"h-oratorio\">Oratorio<\/h4><p>An <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-oratorio\">oratorio<\/a><\/strong> is a large-scale work for orchestra and voices, usually sacred in nature. Oratorios are narrative in the same way as opera, but are performed without staging, costume, action or scenery.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-ostinato\">Ostinato<\/h4><p>Meaning &#8216;obstinate&#8217;, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-ostinato\">ostinato<\/a><\/strong> describes a repeated musical phrase or rhythm. Example: \u2018When I am laid in earth\u2019 from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/henry-purcell\">Purcell<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/guide-purcell-dido-and-aeneas-best-recordings\">Dido and Aeneas<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. Dido\u2019s line aspires and plunges, aspires and sighs with the fluid drama of her emotions. Underneath, the unchanging passacaglia bass circles inexorably, like fate.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-overture\">Overture<\/h4><p>Drawing, in a nice change, on the French rather than Italian, an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-overture\">overture<\/a><\/strong> is an introductory movement to an opera or substantial work. In opera, the overture usually contains examples of the major musical themes that will appear throughout the work \u2013 a type of trailer for what is to come.<\/p><h3 id=\"LetterP\">Musical terms beginning with P<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-partita\">Partita<\/h4><p>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-is-a-partita\">partita<\/a><\/strong> is a suite of dances, usually written for a solo instrument.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-passacaglia\">Passacaglia<\/h4><p>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/discovering-music-passacaglia\">passacaglia<\/a><\/strong> is a musical form that originated in Spain in the 17th century and is often based on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/ground-bass\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>ground bass<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and written in triple metre. It was initially written to accompany a type of Spanish dance.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-pentatonic-scale\">Pentatonic scale<\/h4><p>The simple way of describing a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-pentatonic-scale\">pentatonic scale<\/a><\/strong> is as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-scale-in-music\/\"><strong>music scale<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>that contains five notes. Many musicians initially learn seven-note heptatonic scales when they first pick up a new instrument, and pentatonic scales are based on these, but they omit the fourth and seventh notes in the major scales and the second and sixth in the minor scales.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-pianoforte\">Pianoforte<\/h4><p>Italian for &#8216;soft loud&#8217; and soon colloquially known as the &#8216;piano&#8217;, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/who-invented-the-piano\">pianoforte<\/a><\/strong> was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori in 1698 and developed during the following century. <\/p><h4 id=\"h-pitch\">Pitch<\/h4><p>Pitch is the frequency of the vibration of a sound &#8211; or a measurement of how high or low a musical note is. For a fuller explanation, read Stephen Johnson&#8217;s insightful article on <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/Pitch refers to how high or low a musical note is.\">pitch<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p><h4 id=\"h-pizzicato\">Pizzicato<\/h4><p>Italian for &#8216;plucked&#8217;, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-pizzicato\">pizzicato<\/a><\/strong> is an instruction for musicians playing stringed instruments, such as the violin. It tells these musicians that they should use their fingers to pluck the strings, rather than play them using a bow.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-polyphony\">Polyphony<\/h4><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/polyphony-music-definition\">Polyphony<\/a><\/strong> describes the simultaneous use of two or more melodies (or voices) within a composition. This could be anything from a simple canon (or round) to something much more complex.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-portamento\">Portamento<\/h4><p>Inagine you progress\u00a0from glissando \u2013 that distinctive sliding note \u2013 mentioned above, to producing the notes of an identifiable tune, sliding rapidly between them. If so, then what you performed is probably better described as \u2018portamento\u2019.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-presto\">Presto<\/h4><p>This is Italian for &#8216;fast&#8217;, and it means that the music should be played at a quick tempo. The final movement, &#8216;Saltarello&#8217;, of Mendelssohn&#8217;s exuberant Symphony No. 4 &#8216;Italian&#8217; is played <em>presto<\/em>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Mendelssohn: Symphony no. 4, IV. Saltarello \u00b7 Antwerp Symphony Orchestra\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v_tt_ttZsP0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h3 id=\"LetterQ\">Musical terms beginning with Q<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-quartet\">Quartet<\/h4><p>A group of four players (typically, but not always, a string quartet), or a piece of work composed for four players (ditto).<\/p><h3 id=\"LetterR\">Musical terms beginning with R<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-rallentando\">Rallentando<\/h4><p>Italian for &#8216;becoming slower&#8217;, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-rallentando\">rallentando<\/a><\/strong> is an instruction that the music should gradually start to slow down. Opposite of <em>accelerando<\/em> above.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-recitative\">Recitative<\/h4><p>Most often used in opera and\u00a0oratorio, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-is-recitative\">recitative<\/a><\/strong> is a type of singing in which the soloist adopts the rhythm and delivery of ordinary speech to move the plot forward. The vocalist takes inspiration from by the free rhythm of the words, so the instrumental accompaniment is fairly minimal.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-ritardando\">Ritardando<\/h4><p>(Italian: &#8216;becoming slower&#8217;). Often abbreviated as &#8216;rit.&#8217;, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-aritardando\">ritardando<\/a><\/strong> is an instruction to gradually play slower. Like <em>rallentando<\/em> above, then, and actually quite hard to distinguish between the two. <\/p><h4 id=\"h-rococo\">Rococo<\/h4><p>In architecture and visual art, the rococo denoted a light, decorative French style. In music, the term refers to a period (roughly 1740-1780) characterised by highly decorative, elaborately ornate music.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-rondo\">Rondo<\/h4><p>A rondo is a piece of music where a passage continually reoccurs. Read Stephen Johnson&#8217;s typically clear and concise explanation of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-rondo\">rondo<\/a><\/strong> form to get the full picture&#8230;<\/p><h4 id=\"h-rubato\">Rubato<\/h4><p>Italian for &#8216;stolen&#8217;, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/discovering-music-rubato\">rubato<\/a><\/strong> (or &#8216;tempo rubato&#8217;, stolen time, to give it its full name) is an instruction to (temporarily) ignore the strict tempo previously instructed. A rubato instruction is effectively inviting the performer to be a little creative and flexible with the rhythm and pace: speeding up or slowing down is invited, to add to the overall effect or to emphasise certain key passages.<\/p><h3 id=\"LetterS\">Musical terms beginning with S<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-scale\">Scale<\/h4><p>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-scale-in-music\">scale<\/a><\/strong> is the sounding of a sequence of notes (in order) within an octave. A scale will begin on the tonic (or key note) after which the scale is named. So, for example, the C Major scale is: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, with each note played in turn.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-serialism\">Serialism<\/h4><p>Serialism is a compositional technique pioneered by Arnold Schoenberg using all 12 notes of the western scale \u2013 all within a fixed set of rules.<\/p><p>As a replacement for the old \u2018system\u2019 of tonality, Schoenberg invented a way of maintaining all 12 notes of the chromatic scale in constant, ordered rotation: a \u201812-note row\u2019. <\/p><p><strong>Sonata\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>From the<strong> <\/strong>Italian: &#8216;sonare&#8217;, to sound, a sonata classical music, sonata means the piece is performed by an instrument typically a piano or another instrument accompanied by a piano \u2013 rather than being something that is performed vocally (the term &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/what-is-a-cantata\/\"><strong>cantata<\/strong><\/a>&#8216; is used to describe a piece that is sung).<\/p><h4 id=\"h-sonata-form\">Sonata form<\/h4><p>Sharing much meaning with, but slightly distinct from sonata above, sonata form is simply a way of organsiing a musical movement into three distinct phases: exposition, development and recapitulation. Get to the bottom of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/discovering-music-sonata-form\">sonata form<\/a><\/strong> with Stephen Johnson&#8217;s clear, accessible explanation.<\/p><h4 id=\"h-soprano\">Soprano<\/h4><p>The highest of the classical voice types.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/20-greatest-sopranos-all-time\">20 greatest sopranos of all time<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p\/><h4 id=\"h-staccato\">Staccato<\/h4><p>A form of playing in which a note is played in a detached fashion, rather than running into the notes preceding or following it. As Stephen Johnson puts it, &#8216;<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-isstaccato\">Staccato<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0notes or words walk on tip-toe or jab you emphatically in the solar plexus.&#8217;<\/p><h4 id=\"h-stave-staff\">Stave \/ staff<\/h4><p>Also known as a staff,<strong> a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-stave\">stave<\/a> <\/strong>is the collection of lines onto which notes are placed on a musical score. Each stave comprises five lines, creating four spaces in between them.<\/p><p\/><h4 id=\"h-symphony\">Symphony<\/h4><p>A large-scale orchestral work, usually in four movements, in which at least one is in sonata form (see above). Typcially, the four movements of a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-symphony\">symphony<\/a><\/strong> will be: Opening movement; Scherzo; Slow movement; Finale.<\/p><h3 id=\"LetterT\">Musical terms beginning with T<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-tempo\">Tempo<\/h4><p>Italian for &#8216;time&#8217;, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-tempo-in-music\">tempo<\/a><\/strong> is the speed at which a piece of music is to be played. Tempo indications appear either at the beginning of a piece, or within it. Sometimes tempo is indicated by strict beats-per-minute, or using terminology which can be more flexible.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/conductor-roger-norrington-on-honouring-beethovens-tempo-markings\">Conductor Roger Norrington on honouring Beethoven&#8217;s tempo markings<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h4 id=\"h-tenor\">Tenor<\/h4><p>The tenor range comes between countertenor and baritone, and is this the highest section of the typical adult male range.<\/p><p><strong>Toccata\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>From the Italian &#8216;toccare&#8217;, meaning to touch, a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-toccata\">toccata<\/a><\/strong> is the musical term for an instrumental composition that gives the musician chance to show off their range of skills. It is also used to describe music that is written using conventional keys and harmony. <\/p><h4 id=\"h-tremolo\">Tremolo<\/h4><p>Tremolo means<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>&#8216;trembling&#8217; in Italian, and this musical instruction asks for a single note to be repeated very quickly, producing a kind of shivering or trembling sound &#8211; and a keen sense of anticipation, which is why it&#8217;s often a very effective opening to a work. SLightly faster than Allegro, but slower than Presto.<\/p><h3 id=\"LetterW\">Musical terms beginning with W<\/h3><h4 id=\"h-waltz\">Waltz<\/h4><p>A dance in triple time: 1-2-3, 1-2-3, etcetera.
