In her early career she shone as the heroine of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/george-gershwin\">Gershwin<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s opera <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/porgy-and-bess-gershwins-opera\">Porgy and Bess<\/a><\/strong><\/em> \u2013 has there ever been a more gorgeous account of \u2018<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/six-best-versions-gershwins-summertime\">Summertime<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 than Price\u2019s? \u2013 but she also sang Mme Lidoine in the US premiere of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/francis-poulenc\">Poulenc<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s <em>Dialogues des Carmelites<\/em>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/richard-strauss\">Strauss<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Ariadne<\/em>. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/six-best-works-george-gershwin\">Gershwin: six of the best works<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Her close friendship with the composer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/samuel-barber\">Samuel Barber<\/a><\/strong> brought forth the Hermit Song and the female title role of his opera, Anthony and Cleopatra that opened the new Metropolitan Opera in 1966. Above all their names are linked in the glorious recording of Barber\u2019s soprano scena <em>Knoxville: Summer of 1915<\/em>.
