You may have heard its ethereal sound on the 1951 science fiction classic film The Day the Earth Stood Still<\/em>, scored by Bernard Hermann. Or in Mikl\u00f3s R\u00f3zsa’s 1945 score to the Alfred Hitchcock film Spellbound<\/em>. Perhaps its otherworldly sound first reached you through the Beach Boys’ Good Vibrations<\/em>, or the sound of those adorable extra-terrestrial creatures The Clangers<\/em>. Any which way, the theremin is undoubtedly one of the most oddly atmospheric and weirdest instruments<\/a><\/strong> in the pantheon. But just what is a theremin, and does it produce those extraordinary sounds?<\/p>

What is a theremin?<\/h2>
Invented in 1920, the theremin was the world’s electronic instrument, known for its contactless playing technique, its use in science fiction films and its eerie timbre that sounds like a descending alien spacecraft. <\/p>

The instrument was invented by (and takes its name from) the Russian Soviet-era scientist Leon Theremin<\/a><\/strong> (1896-1993).<\/p>

As a 23-year-old man working at the Physical Technical Institute in Petrograd, Theremin noticed that something strange happened when he connected audio circuits to an electrical device called an oscillator in a certain way. The oscillator produced an audible tone when he held his hands near it, and he could shift the tone just by waving his hands about. <\/p>
As a classically-trained cellist<\/a><\/strong>, Theremin saw the oscillator’s potential as a musical instrument. He delivered the first concert with it soon after. Later he held a private demonstration for Lenin and Einstein, before coming to the USA, where he patented the device. <\/p>
How do you play the theremin?<\/h2>
The theremin has two antennae – one horizontal and one vertical – each of which has an electromagnetic field surrounding it. You play it by moving your hand in front of the instrument, creating interference. <\/p>
The closer your hand gets to the vertical antenna, the higher the pitch. The closer your hand gets to the horizontal one, the quieter the volume. However, the distance between the individual notes can vary according to the individual instrument.<\/p>
<\/div><\/figure><h2 id=\"h-is-it-easy-to-play\">Is it easy to play?<\/h2><p>Sadly not. In fact, the theremin is notorious as one of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/hardest-instruments-to-play\">hardest instruments<\/a><\/strong> to master. <\/p><h2 id=\"h-what-were-the-first-pieces-to-feature-a-theremin\">What were the first pieces to feature a theremin?<\/h2><p>The very first was an orchestral piece called <em>Symphonic Mystery <\/em>by Andrei Paschenko, which was premiered in 1924. But most of the sheet music for the piece was lost after its second performance. It also appeared in the soundtrack to various horror and mystery movies, among them Mikl\u00f3s R\u00f3zsa’s 1945 score to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/listen\/podcast\/music-alfred-hitchcock-first-listen\/\">Alfred Hitchcock<\/a><\/strong> film <em>Spellbound. <\/em><\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/the-best-works-for-the-theremin\">The best works for the theremin<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Various pop and rock stars have had their dalliances with the instrument, including Simon and Garfunkel, Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and The Rolling Stones’s Brian Jones – and the instrument’s influence on electronic music was considerable. Contrary to popular myth, the theremin does not appear on the Beach Boys’ 1966 single <em>Good Vibrations <\/em>or anywhere on the soundtracks to <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/who-composed-the-theme-tune-to-doctor-who\/\">Doctor Who<\/a><\/strong> <\/em>or <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/best-star-wars-music-scores\/\">Star Wars<\/a><\/strong>. <\/em>But it does have a big role in <em>Clangers, <\/em>the children’s TV series about a family of mouse-like creatures who live on a small moon-like planet. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/best-television-theme-tunes\/\">The best TV theme tunes<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 id=\"h-is-it-still-being-used\">Is it still being used?<\/h2><p>Yes!
