This was a thrilling showcase of orchestral works by New York-based composer Missy Mazzoli, performed by two Norwegian ensembles. At the album\u2019s heart are two takes on Mazzoli\u2019s evocative 2021 concerto Dark With Excessive Bright<\/em>, originally penned for double bass, which sits among other notable premiere recordings.<\/p>

Works spanning decades made up this programme of premiere recordings, Maconchy\u2019s 1941 Dialogue <\/em>just as crucial and appealing an addition to the piano concerto repertoire as Errollyn Wallen\u2019s own modern offering. This \u2018altogether commendable album\u2019 saw violist Rosalind Ventris explore overlooked solo repertoire written for her instrument by women composers in the 20th and 21st centuries, a good number of which recorded here for the first time. The result was something of a treasure trove, Ventris\u2019s programme \u2018beautiful, varied and enlightening\u2019.<\/p>
