The winner was Charlie Chaplin&#8217;s score for the 1952 film <em>Limelight<\/em>, which received a delayed release in Los Angeles in 1972.<\/p><p>Fortunately, it wasn&#8217;t the end for Nino Rota, who went on to win the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/all-the-oscar-winners-and-nominees-for-best-original-score\/\"><strong>Oscar for Best Original Score<\/strong><\/a> two years later for his work on the film&#8217;s sequel: <em>The Godfather Part II. <\/em>But <em>The Godfather <\/em>music had a storied journey to get there.<\/p><p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Godfather-Various-Artists\/dp\/B000002OG5\/ref=asc_df_B000002OG5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>You can buy Nino Rota&#8217;s soundtrack to The Godfather from Amazon<\/strong><\/a>.<\/em><\/p><h2 id=\"h-what-are-the-restrictions-and-eligibility-criteria-for-the-academy-award-for-best-original-score\">What are the restrictions and eligibility criteria for the Academy Award for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/all-the-oscar-winners-and-nominees-for-best-original-score\/\">Best Original Score?<\/a><\/h2><p>The rules were changed in 2020 to allow film scores that included a minimum of 60% original material to be nominated for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/all-the-oscar-winners-and-nominees-for-best-original-score\/\"><strong>Oscar<\/strong><\/a>. Sequels and franchise films have to include a minimum of 80% new material. Films can appeal to the Academy Awards if they do not meet the exact percentage criteria.
