It is now a modern instrument capable of extreme contrasts, and of mood swings from the softest lullaby to sudden violent outbursts. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-a-trumpet\">What is a trumpet?<\/h2><p> The trumpet is a brass wind instrument, which is similar to a cornet \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/cornet-vs-trumpet\"><strong>find out how a trumpet differs to a cornet. <\/strong><\/a>It is the highest voiced brass instrument in symphony orchestras and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/what-instruments-make-up-a-jazz-band\">jazz bands<\/a><\/strong> or ensembles. The lips, equivalent to a singer&#8217;s vocal chords, vibrate to produce pitch, controlled by the facial muscles.<\/p><p>A steady stream of air, diaphragm-controlled, carries these vibrations into the instrument.<\/p><p>The tongue, articulating consonants as in speech, lends definition, the mouthpiece focus and the trumpet, amplification.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-different-parts-of-the-trumpet\">The different parts of the trumpet<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"\/><p><strong>A) The bell:<\/strong> Flare and thickness is important for sound quality<\/p><p><strong>B) Main tuning slide:<\/strong> Usually pulled out between 1\/2&#8243; and 1 &#8220;<\/p><p><strong>C) Side trigger:<\/strong> Adjusts the third valve for fine intonation<\/p><p><strong>D) <\/strong><strong>The leadpipe:<\/strong> Important for production of high register; for degree of brilliance of sound<\/p><p><strong>E) The mouthpiece:<\/strong> Rim &#8211; must be comfortable on lips. Cup &#8211; depth and shape determine a bright or dark sound. Throat size &#8211; determines freedom of blow. Backbore &#8211; determines intonation and upper register freedom<\/p><p><strong>F)<\/strong> <strong>The bow:<\/strong> Important for intonation<\/p><p><strong>G) Second Piston:<\/strong> Pistons are depressed to alter pitch<\/p><p><strong>H)<\/strong> <strong>Waterkey:<\/strong> lets out condensation of players breath<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/the-history-of-the-trumpet-its-invention-evolution-and-famous-trumpet-makers\">The history of the trumpet: its invention, evolution and famous trumpet makers<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-different-types-of-trumpet\">Different types of trumpet<\/h2><p><strong>B flat trumpet<\/strong><\/p><p>Standard orchestral instrument<\/p><p><strong>C trumpet<\/strong><\/p><p>Common alternative to the B flat trumpet, especially in Tchaikovsky and Britten. Produces a more strident sound.<\/p><p><strong>D trumpet<\/strong><\/p><p>Commonly used for Baroque trumpet parts, but sometimes specified by more modern composers like Ravel in <em>Bolero<\/em><\/p><p><strong>E flat trumpet<\/strong><\/p><p>Modern instrument generally used for the Haydn and Hummel concertos. Can be used orchestrally for greater security in the hight range.<\/p><p><strong>B flat\/A piccolo trumpet<\/strong><\/p><p>Used for the higher Baroque parts, including the <em>Brandenburg Concerto No. 2<\/em><\/p><p><strong>Bass trumpet<\/strong><\/p><p>Introduced to the orchestra by Wagner. Also used by composers such as Strauss and Stravinsky. Due to size of the mouthpiece it is usually played by trombonists.<\/p><p><strong>Rotary valve trumpet<\/strong><\/p><p>Developed in Germany in 19th century. Increasingly used in other countries for mainstream German repertoire.<\/p><p><strong>Herald trumpet<\/strong><\/p><p>This is a longer than a standard trumpet designed not only to play fanfares but also so it can hold ceremonial banners.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What kind of mute do you need?<\/h2><p>Mutes are used in brass instruments to change the volume and timbre, and they fit directly into the bell of the trumpet.
