In March last year, the BBC announced that it would be disbanding the ensemble, a decision that was met with significant backlash from the musical community. The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/bbc-singers-closure-decision-to-be-suspended\">BBC then suspended its decision<\/a><\/strong> and then <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/the-bbc-reveals-future-of-the-bbc-singers\">reversed it this February<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p><ul><li><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/bbc-singers-receive-rps-award-nomination-after-challenging-year\">BBC Singers receive RPS Award nomination after challenging year<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>A posthumous award was presented to composer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/kaija-saariaho-best-works\">Kaija Saariaho<\/a><\/strong> who <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/composer-kaija-saariaho-has-died-aged-70\">died last year<\/a><\/strong>. She was remembered and recognised in two categories this year for her opera <em>Innocence<\/em>, which was nominated for Large-Scale Composition and also in the Opera and Music Theatre category for its UK premiere at The Royal Opera.\u00a0It was beaten in the Opera and Music Theatre category by <em>Chornobyldorf<\/em>, a production from the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, co-composed and directed by Ukraine&#8217;s Illia Razumeiko and Roman Grygoriv before the Russian invasion. <\/p><p>Jasdeep Singh Degun became the first sitar player to win an RPS Award, celebrated for his &#8216;glorious re-telling of <em>Orpheus <\/em>with Opera North.&#8217; <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Jasdeep Singh Degun with RPS chairman John Gilhooly at the 2024 RPS Awards<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><p><em>BBC Music Magazine <\/em>critic and writer <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/classical-music.com\/author\/leah-broad\">Leah Broad<\/a><\/strong> won the Storytelling Award for her book <em>Quartet: How Four Women Changed the Musical World. <\/em><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-purple-m101-price-comparsion\"><div class=\"m101\" data-type=\"price-comparison\" data-template=\"default\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Quartet-Women-Changed-Musical-World-ebook\/dp\/B0B2QHZSNV\/\" data-title=\"\" data-config=\"{&quot;searchKeywords&quot;:&quot;quartet leah broad&quot;,&quot;excludeKeywords&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;price&quot;:&quot;10.11&quot;,&quot;delta&quot;:&quot;50&quot;,&quot;limit&quot;:&quot;4&quot;}\"\/><\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1708\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2024\/03\/Leah-Broad_RPS-Awards-2024_CR-Lee-Isserow-Vessel-Studios-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of Leah Broad at the 2024 RPS Awards against a purple background\" class=\"wp-image-202427\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Leah Broad wins the 2024 RPS Storyteller Award for her book, Quartet<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Gamechanger Award went to the Irene Taylor Trust for its work using music to help and empower people affected by the criminal justice system, while the Impact Award was presented to Clare Johnston and Drake Music Scotland. Together, they created <em>Call of the Mountains<\/em>, a collaboration with Kazakhstan&#8217;s Eegeru ensemble. &#8216;Drake Music Scotland are renowed for empowering disabled musicians.
