Almost ten years later, on 20 July 1969, Apollo 11 successfully landed with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, who became the first humans to step onto the Moon\u2019s surface. To commemorate those two extraordinary events, here are six outstanding scores which reflect how \u2013 even before and since these events &#8211; the popular imagination has been haunted by outer space and what distant worlds might be discovered there. Introducing&#8230; the best sci-fi movie soundtracks of all time!<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The best sci-fi movie soundtracks of all time<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-things-to-come-1936-arthur-bliss\">Things to Come (1936: Arthur Bliss)<\/h3><p>With a script by HG Wells, the father of much of today\u2019s science fiction, this is in theory an intriguing landmark in British cinema history. In practice it is a frightfully stilted, mannered and \u2013 at least by today\u2019s standard \u2013 slow moving drama, which takes its time to reach the technological wonders of the future, including the first manned flight around the moon.<\/p><p>The most vibrant feature of the film is in fact Arthur Bliss\u2019s splendid score, its grimly triumphal \u2018March\u2019 being its most famous cue. Bliss himself made an excellent recording of the <em>Things to Come <\/em>suite with the London Symphony Orchestra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prestomusic.com\/classical\/products\/7998268--bliss-conducts-bliss-1\"><strong>(Heritage HTGCD220)<\/strong><\/a>, and there is a modern recording of the complete score by Rumon Gamba conducting the BBC Philharmonic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prestomusic.com\/classical\/products\/7923162--the-film-music-of-sir-arthur-bliss\"><strong>(Chandos CHAN 9896)<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"March from &quot;Things to Come&quot; - Sir Arthur Bliss conducts\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6t6_piBtLpA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/article\/10-best-films-made-about-composers\"><strong>10 of the best (and worst) films about composers<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><p> <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-day-the-earth-stood-still-1951-bernard-herrmann\">The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951: Bernard Herrmann)<\/h3><p>Here, by contrast, is a film which has stood the test of time, not least due to its still eerie-sounding score by Bernard Herrmann (and helped by some fine acting, plus special effects which have not dated as badly as one might expect). Already established through scoring several Orson Welles pictures, including <em>Citizen Kane<\/em>, Herrmann was yet to form his legendary partnership with Hitchcock.<\/p><p><em>The Day the Earth Stood Still <\/em>was his first Hollywood score after he had moved from New York, and he was clearly keen to make an impression. His unusual line of instruments included electric violin, cello and bass; two theremins; two Hammond organs; an array of percussion; and 11 brass instruments (one horn, three each of trumpets and trombones, and four tubas). The theremins in particular dominate the music\u2019s soundworld, most memorably the scenes involving the alien spacecraft.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/article\/six-best-classical-music-film-cameos\"><strong>Six of the best classical music film cameos<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-solaris-1972-music-by-eduard-artemyev\">Solaris (1972: music by Eduard Artemyev)<\/h3><p> This Soviet film, directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, is said to have been produced in response to Stanley Kubrick\u2019s <em>2001: A Space Odyssey<\/em>. Unlike Kubrick, who famously ditched the commissioned score in favour of his eclectic temp track which successfully mixed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/richard-strauss\"><strong>Richard Strauss<\/strong><\/a>, Ligeti et al, Tarkovsky used a remarkable new score almost entirely (but for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/js-bach\"><strong>Bach<\/strong><\/a> chorale prelude) composed by Eduard Artemyev.<\/p><p>Though subsequently more widely known and loved for his late-Romantic style scores for such international hits as <em>Burnt by the Sun<\/em>, Artemyev was in fact a relatively early pioneer of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/article\/best-electronic-orchestral-music\"><strong>electronic music<\/strong><\/a> within the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/six-best-lesser-known-works-soviet-composers\">Soviet Union<\/a><\/strong>, and had composed music in the Experimental Studio of Electronic Music which opened in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/alexander-scriabin\">Scriabin<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s former Moscow apartment in 1966. It is Artemyev\u2019s strange and unearthly music, above all, which makes one believe the disconcerting \u2018alien\u2019 quality of the scientific research station Solaris.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Edward Artemiev - Solaris Theme\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w3uVf8p-sgE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/article\/six-best-classical-pieces-film\"><strong>Six of the best classical pieces of music on film<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-close-encounters-of-the-third-kind-1977-john-williams\">Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977: John Williams)<\/h3><p>The five note pentatonic theme with which the scientists of Earth communicate with the visiting UFO from space was, of course, created by Spielberg\u2019s legendary \u2018in-house\u2019 composer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/williams-john\">John Williams<\/a><\/strong>. Simple as it sounds, it was just one of over three hundred possible permutations of a five note theme that Williams composed, from which Spielberg selected the one which became for a long time a instantly recognisable motif, used in endless spoofs about extraterrestrial visitations. But just when we were on the point of being seduced with the idea of friendly aliens\u2026<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"John Williams:&quot;Close Encounters of the Third Kind&quot; (1977)-Main Theme\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JbUGsbZWitw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p> <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/six-best-film-scores\/\"><strong>Six of the best film scores<\/strong><\/a> <\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-alien-1979-jerry-goldsmith\">Alien (1979: Jerry Goldsmith)<\/h3><p>The soft screeches, eerie moanings and echoey knocks with which <em>Alien<\/em> opens sets the tone of disquiet and fear that became so much part of the film\u2019s identity. Remarkably, that title sequence was created in some haste by Jerry Goldsmith when the director, Ridley Scott, objected to his original all-too-conventional neo-Romantic title sequence. Other parts of Goldsmith\u2019s score were also jettisoned in preference to temp tracks, which to his annoyance included music he had written for an entirely different film, and the music for the film\u2019s final sequence is taken from Howard Hanson\u2019s Symphony No. 2 (Romantic).<\/p><p>Yet it has to be said that the film became all the more effective for those changes, and \u2013 as Scott admitted \u2013 a good deal of the film\u2019s success still came down to Goldsmith\u2019s music. Not least, Goldsmith had the inspired idea to add to his large orchestra an ensemble of the antique wind instrument, the serpent, to evoke the alien\u2019s menace: though much of its music was excised from the film, the instrument\u2019s blood-curdling rasp can be heard in the final twist when the heroine discovers the alien creature aboard the shuttle in which she intended to escape from the mothership.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ALIEN Main Title (film version)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f9egQyLpEyI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-under-the-skin-2013-mica-levi\">Under the Skin (2013: Mica Levi)<\/h3><p>Finally, another fine example of an original film score which unapologetically uses modernist sounds and so creates a disconcerting and nerve wracking atmosphere. Mica Levi \u2013 also known by her stage name Micachu, in which guise she performs with her group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8TRkZpFgJcI\"><strong>Micachu and the Shapes<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 was trained at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. While a student, she had the experience of writing a work performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra; she subsequently became an artist-in-residence at the Southbank in 2010.<\/p><p>She was just 26 when she was approached by film director Jonathan Glazer to write her first film score for his film <em>Under the Skin<\/em>, starring Scarlett Johansson as an extraterrestrial who in human guise entices various men.
