We&#8217;ve looked through the archives for some of the best works for the theremin, and the songs and pieces of music that have featured this unusual instrument over the years. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-a-theremin\">What is a theremin?<\/h2><p>The theremin was invented in 1920 by Russian scientist, cellist and spy Lev Sergeyevich Termen, or Leon Theremin as he was known in the US.<\/p><p>Surely the only instrument that is played without anyone touching it, its physics are simple: two antennae emit electrical fields and the player interrupts them with any part of their body. In general, the left hand controls volume while the right hand determines pitch.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The best works for the theremin<\/h2><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/bohuslav-martinu\"><strong>Martin\u016f<\/strong><\/a> wove moments of otherworldly tenderness into the otherwise bruising textures of his <em>Fantasia<\/em> for theremin, oboe, piano and string quartet.<\/p><p>The theremin also crops up in Fazil Say&#8217;s Universe Symphony and Kalevi&#8217;s Theremin Concerto, which we included in our list of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/10-of-the-best-concertos-for-unusual-instruments\/\">best concertos for unusual instruments<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Say: Universe Symphony \u2219 hr-Sinfonieorchester \u2219 Howard Griffiths\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NFvZ5onSX3I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>Written between 1932 and \u201934, Edgar Var\u00e8se\u2019s <em>Ecuatorial<\/em> was one of the first pieces to mix electronic and traditional instruments. A Mayan invocation to the creative gods, the work\u2019s premiere featured two theremins, although subsequent performances used <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-ondes-martenot\">ondes Martenot<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Edgard Var\u00e8se - Ecuatorial - Ensemble intercontemporain\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qM4ALq9-Y1g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/10-of-the-best-concertos-for-unusual-instruments\/\"><strong>10 of the best concertos for unusual instruments<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/george-gershwin\"><strong>Gershwin<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s pupil Joseph Schillinger wrote his 1929 <em>First Airphonic Suite<\/em> for Lev Termen, the inventor of the theremin \u2013 highly Romantic in style, the suite incorporates the instrument as naturally as if a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/whats-a-cello\">cello<\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/violin-history\">violin<\/a><\/strong> were the soloist.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Theremin First AerophinicSuite, Schillinger 1992 Film 1996 2009\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PPNiXbeuiyY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/article\/six-best-pieces-prepared-piano\"><strong>Six of the best pieces for prepared piano<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>Although not originally scored for the theremin, the Australian composer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/percy-grainger\"><strong>Percy Grainger<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s theoretical <em>Free Music Nos 1-4<\/em> suits them well, being written for an unnamed instrument of free, continuous pitch without rhythmic elements.<\/p><p>In the film world, meanwhile, the theremin has been used for eerie sci-fi sounds, most notably by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/bernard-herrmann\">Bernard Herrmann<\/a><\/strong> (<em>The Day The Earth Stood Still<\/em>), Howard Shore (<em>Ed Wood<\/em>), Danny Elfman (<em>Mars Attacks<\/em>) and, notably, Mikl\u00f3s R\u00f3zsa (<em>Spellbound<\/em>).<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/article\/best-electronic-orchestral-music\"><strong>The best electronic orchestral music<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Freya Parr Published: Monday, 11 March 2024 at 11:08 AM The theremin is a fascinating no-contact instrument that has been used in a surprising number of musical styles, thanks to its unique \u2013\u00a0and haunting \u2013 sound.
