In every issue of <em>BBC Music Magazine<\/em>, we highlight a few young classical musicians and rising stars from the classical music industry. Here are some of the names to watch this year&#8230;<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-rising-stars-of-classical-music\">The rising stars of classical music<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ian Niederhoffer<\/strong> <em>Conductor<\/em><\/h3><p><strong>Born:<\/strong> New York, US<\/p><p><strong>Career highlights:<\/strong> Winning three prizes in the 2021 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/aram-khachaturian\">Khachaturian<\/a><\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-does-a-conductor-do\">conducting<\/a><\/strong> competition in Yerevan, Armenia was life-changing. Performing with musicians who had just undergone such national tragedy [the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict] made me a true believer in music\u2019s capacity to heal.<\/p><p><strong>Musical hero:<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/leonard-bernstein-composer\">Leonard Bernstein<\/a><\/strong>. He didn\u2019t just make the audience listen, he taught them how to listen.<\/p><p><strong>Dream concert:<\/strong> Performing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/brittens-war-requiem-the-story-of-how-britten-came-to-compose-his-most-famous-piece\">Britten\u2019s <em>War Requiem<\/em><\/a><\/strong>. I gravitate towards repertoire that intersects with historical memory, and this piece is a powerful example of music\u2019s ability to make the past come alive.<\/p><script src=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/players\/YCjcY8vg-lqFafnwo.js\"\/><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lucy Colquhoun<\/strong> <em>Pianist<\/em><\/h3><p><strong>Born:<\/strong> London, UK\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Career highlights:<\/strong> Playing for baritone Thomas Allen. The extent of his experience and the artists with whom he worked closely must be almost totally unrivalled.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Musical heroes:<\/strong> As a teenager I adored pianist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-is-martha-argerich-all-you-need-to-know-about-the-brilliant-pianist\">Martha Argerich<\/a><\/strong> (who we named as one of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/20-greatest-pianists-all-time\">best pianists of all time<\/a><\/strong>). Nowadays I admire a melting pot of many artists, in particular pianist Murray Perahia. I have also felt hugely inspired by many teachers, and by the playing of other musicians alongside me.<\/p><p><strong>Dream concert:<\/strong> Somewhere that truly appreciates song \u2013 Wigmore Hall, perhaps \u2013 with repertoire and singers I love. A curated and themed series of recitals would be the ultimate dream!<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lunga Eric Hallam<\/strong> <em>Tenor<\/em><\/h3><p><strong>Born:<\/strong> Cape Town, South Africa<\/p><p><strong>Career highlights:<\/strong> Performing Count Almaviva in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/gioachino-rossini\">Rossini<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>The Barber of Seville <\/em>with Pittsburgh Opera, as well as Don Ottavio in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/mozarts-don-giovanni-best-recordings\">Mozart\u2019s <em>Don Giovanni<\/em><\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><p><strong>Musical heroes:<\/strong> Two operatic tenors, Franco Corelli (who we named as one of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/20-greatest-tenors-all-time\">best tenors of all time<\/a><\/strong>) and Rockwell Blake. They are from two very different musical eras, but their technical work has inspired me to become the singer that I am.<\/p><p><strong>Dream concert:<\/strong> A solo recital at the BBC Proms or the Royal Opera House. My repertoire would encompass John Ireland songs, <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-bel-canto\">bel canto<\/a><\/strong><\/em> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-aria\">aria<\/a><\/strong> repertoire \u2013 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/gaetano-donizetti\">Donizetti<\/a><\/strong>, Rossini and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/vincenzo-bellini\">Bellini<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 some pieces of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/baroque-music-guide\">Baroque music<\/a><\/strong> and some of my\u00a0native <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/best-folk-songs-15-most-famous-folk-songs\">folk songs<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/five-best-young-classical-guitarists\">Five of the best young classical guitarists<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tiffany Poon<\/strong> <em>Pianist<\/em><\/h3><p><strong>Born:<\/strong> Hong Kong<\/p><p><strong>Career highlight:<\/strong> Pentatone releasing my debut album <em>Diaries: Schumann<\/em>; playing to a sold-out palace at Dresden Musikfestspiele; and Deutsche Welle filming a documentary about my journey with music.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Musical hero:<\/strong> Pianist Vladimir Horowitz, for his ability to speak directly to your heart; and my musician friends, for their enthusiasm in promoting culture and education beyond the stage. And birds!<\/p><p><strong>Dream concert:<\/strong> My parents have sacrificed a lot for my piano career. I\u2019m lucky enough to be doing it again there this season.<\/p><p><strong>Musical heroes: <\/strong>Samuel Ramey, Nicolai Ghiaurov and (especially) Cesare Siepi \u2013 three very different bass voices, each blessed with great musicianship and star charisma. And tenor Jon Vickers: the epitome of a singing actor, which we all must aspire to be.<\/p><p><strong>Dream concert: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/the-best-recordings-of-mahlers-ruckert-lieder\">Mahler\u2019s<em> R\u00fcckert Lieder<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, paired with a new work by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/life-composer-george-benjamin\">George Benjamin<\/a><\/strong>, featuring something for me to sing! Benjamin\u2019s<em> Written on Skin<\/em> was one of the moments that inspired me to pursue this career.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Anastasia Kobekina<\/strong> <em>Cellist<\/em><\/h3><p><strong>Born:<\/strong> Yekaterinburg, Russia<\/p><p><strong>Career highlight:<\/strong> It\u2019s always hard to pick just one. However, playing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/antonin-dvorak\">Dvo\u0159\u00e1k<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Cello Concerto (which we named as one of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/best-cello-concertos-of-all-time\">best cello concertos of all time<\/a><\/strong>) with the Tonhalle Orchestra and Paavo J\u00e4rvi at the opening night of the Dvo\u0159\u00e1k Festival in Prague felt truly special. Both the venue and my musical partners were perfect matches for this masterpiece.<\/p><p><strong>Musical heroes:<\/strong> Violinist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-is-patricia-kopatchinskaja\">Patricia Kopatchinskaja<\/a><\/strong> and violinist\/conductor\/composer Pekka Kuusisto \u2013 for their fearless and true music-making, and their ability to\u00a0create,\u00a0not merely recreate.<\/p><p><strong>Dream concert:<\/strong> I would love to play something with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/guide-jonny-greenwood-film\">Jonny Greenwood<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 or something written by him. This unique event creates an idealised environment in which to explore music, share communal meals and Shakespeare readings, and wander through the glorious woods.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/classical-music-inspired-shakespeare\">Best music inspired by Shakespeare<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Musical hero:<\/strong> Contralto Marian Anderson broke down barriers and highlighted injustices \u2013 all while singing a wide array of repertoire, from Bach to Britten, with deep personal conviction and beauty.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/how-a-concert-halls-whites-only-policy-caused-soprano-marian-anderson-to-find-an-ally-in-eleanor-roosevelt\">How a concert hall's whites-only policy caused soprano Marian Anderson to find an ally in Eleanor Roosevelt<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Dream concert:<\/strong> I love introducing audiences to new music. A dream programme would pair long-ignored British composer Adela Maddison\u2019s <em>Cinq m\u00e9lodies<\/em> with new song cycles being written for me by American composers Elizabeth Ogonek and Tyson Gholston Davis.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fergus McCreadie<\/strong> <em>Pianist<\/em><\/h3><p><strong>Born:<\/strong> Inverness, Scotland<\/p><p><strong>Career highlight:<\/strong> Winning the Scottish Album of the Year award for <em>Forest Floor<\/em> \u2013 the first <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/jazz\/jazz-music-what-it-is-and-how-it-evolved\">jazz<\/a><\/strong> album to win it. In reality, though, the best thing for me happens every time I step on stage with my trio.<\/p><p><strong>Musical hero:<\/strong> I\u2019m so inspired by pianist Keith Jarrett\u2019s approach to improvising and playing. He likens an improvised concert to picking up a blank canvas. You keep all options open.<\/p><p><strong>Dream concert:<\/strong> I\u2019d love to play the Village Vanguard in New York. It\u2019s such a seminal jazz venue, where so many great albums have been recorded.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fergus McCreadie - Unfurrowed Field (Mercury Prize 2022)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wmATkNjAbs4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jonian Kadesha<\/strong> <em>Violinist<\/em><\/h3><p><strong>Born:<\/strong> Athens, Greece<\/p><p><strong>Career highlight:<\/strong> Performing as a soloist with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe under the baton of<br\/>Andr\u00e1s Schiff.<\/p><p><strong>Musical heros:<\/strong> Cellist Steven Isserlis, pianist and conductor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-is-andras-schiff\">Andr\u00e1s Schiff<\/a><\/strong>, violinist Gidon Kremer and composer Gy\u00f6rgy Kurt\u00e1g all have common qualities that inspire me: dignity, vulnerability, honesty, passion, musical intelligence and a measure of wildness.<\/p><p><strong>Dream concert:<\/strong> The more the time passes, the less I care about this. For me, a \u2018dream concert\u2019 is like happiness: you seek it, and it may or may not happen.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Will Duerden<\/strong> <em>Double-bassist<\/em><\/h3><p><strong>Born:<\/strong> Haywards Heath, UK<\/p><p><strong>Career highlight:<\/strong> The Young Classical Artists Trust finals in June 2023 were special. Performing in one of my favourite halls (the Wigmore) with pianist Svitlana Kosenko, a dear friend, and being surrounded by friends and family is an evening I won\u2019t forget anytime soon.<\/p><p><strong>Musical hero:<\/strong> The violinist SongHa Choi, one of my closest friends, has taught me more than I could imagine over the years. Not from lessons or teaching \u2013 just growing up and performing together!<\/p><p><strong>Dream concert:<\/strong> I\u2019d love to perform Tubin\u2019s Double Bass Concerto with the LSO at the Albert Hall, as well as Bottesini\u2019s Gran Duo with SongHa and some Edgar Meyer with violinist Claire Wells, another friend.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/best-classical-double-bass-players\">Ten of the best classical double bass players<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Aaron Pilsan<\/strong> <em>Pianist<\/em><\/h3><p><strong>Born:<\/strong> Dornbirn, Austria<\/p><p><strong>Career highlight:<\/strong> Recording <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/best-recordings-js-bachs-well-tempered-clavier\">Bach\u2019s <em>Well-Tempered Clavier<\/em><\/a><\/strong><em> Book\u00a01 <\/em>with Alpha Classics, because Bach is the reason I\u2019m a musician today.<\/p><p><strong>Musical heros:<\/strong> All the composers I perform, and the teachers and mentors I\u2019ve had. They\u2019ve supported me and taught me how to express myself in music.<\/p><p><strong>Dream concert:<\/strong> I want to reach people in very different settings, as we did in the \u2018Bachathon for Ukraine\u2019, a charity event last year for victims of the war. In Lieder, singing Strauss at the Vienna Musikverein.<\/p><p><strong>Musical heros:<\/strong> Lucia Popp and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf: technical masters with a sheer beauty of timbre, who have made the most iconic recordings of my repertoire. Both make me cry when listening to them!<\/p><p><strong>Dream concert:<\/strong> After last summer singing a Mozart programme in Salzburg, I would love to do a Mozart role in a new production at the Salzburger Festspiele. There\u2019s something magical about Mozart in Salzburg.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Xiaowen Shang<\/strong> <em>Pianist<\/em><\/h3><p><strong>Born:<\/strong> Beijing, China<\/p><p><strong>Career highlight:<\/strong><br\/>April 2024 is set to be the highlight of my career \u2013 it sees the release of my debut album <em>Music of Silence<\/em> and I will also be performing twice at Wigmore Hall, as pianist and harpsichordist.<\/p><p><strong>Musical hero:<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/johann-sebastian-bach\">JS Bach<\/a><\/strong>, who motivates me to explore the musical world; and Brahms, whose music comforts and calms me down.<\/p><p><strong>Dream concert:<\/strong> I would love to perform at the National Gallery \u2013 pianist Myra Hess\u2019s performances there during World War II remind me what artists can do.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/myra-hess-how-the-pianist-became-a-wartime-hero-during-the-blitz\">Myra Hess: how the pianist became a wartime hero during the Blitz<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: De Cabez\u00f3n: Canci\u00f3n religiosa\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/37p7EbuZ0iUYxtE1t99SaD?si=y-p25PCISl-VnL6pv--mDA&amp;utm_source=oembed\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Laure Chan<\/strong> <em>Violinist<\/em><\/h3><p><strong>Born:<\/strong> London, UK<\/p><p><strong>Career highlight:<\/strong> Recording my latest concerto album at Abbey Road Studios, and making my solo debut at Carnegie\u2019s Weill Recital Hall in New York in December 2023.<\/p><p><strong>Musical heros:<\/strong> At nine years old, I heard Maxim Vengerov at the Barbican. I was mesmerised by his virtuosity and charisma \u2013 that was when I decided to become a violinist. Among composers, Bach, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/mozart\">Mozart<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/pyotr-ilyich-tchaikovsky\">Tchaikovsky<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/johannes-brahms\">Brahms<\/a><\/strong> have always deeply moved and inspired me.<\/p><p><strong>Dream concert:<\/strong> I\u2019d love to play at Wigmore Hall, in a diverse programme including original compositions and music inspired by my cultural roots and featuring both Western classical and Chinese folk instruments.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Christian Reif<\/strong> <em>Conductor<\/em><\/h3><p><strong>Born:<\/strong> Rosenheim, Germany<\/p><p><strong>Career highlight:<\/strong> Working with artists and ensembles that I love always results in natural, special music-making. One example was Julia Bullock\u2019s <em>Walking In The Dark<\/em>, for which I conducted and played piano. It was a reflection of the intense times in which we lived during 2020\/21, so the Grammy Award was a nice recognition.<\/p><p><strong>Musical heros:<\/strong> Various, but always with the same qualities: living with genuine curiosity, communicating with warmth and bringing out the best in people.<\/p><p><strong>Dream concert:<\/strong> A programme that touches and inspires audience members. And the venue?
