La Bo\u00eete \u00e0 P\u00e9pites BAP04-05 \u00a0 103 mins (2 discs)<\/em><\/p> La Bo\u00eete \u00e0 P\u00e9pites has scored another hit with the turn-of-the-century songs of the prolific and visionary Rita Strohl (1865-1941). Here are four substantial cycles, including Bilitis, Quand la fl\u00fbte de Pan<\/em> (poems declaimed over piano); six Baudelaire settings; and Dix po\u00e9sies <\/em>with assorted poets.<\/p> Harmonically and structurally uninhibited, and an excellent pianist herself, Strohl gave each text a bespoke response. From the first song, \u2018Lykas\u2019, I fell in love with her dazzling imagination. Elsa Dreisig and Romain Louveau transport us in the Greek-inspired songs of Bilitis<\/em>, Dreisig\u2019s cool sound an excellent match to the archaic-style poetry, and \u2018La Chevelure\u2019\u00a0is irresistible. \u2018Le Sommeil interrompu\u2019 startlingly describes a nocturnal rape. Olivia Dalric and C\u00e9lia Oneto Bensaid hypnotise in the Pan<\/em> poems.<\/p> St\u00e9phane Degout and Louveau\u2019s rendition of the six Baudelaire settings is by turns bleak and dramatic. Strohl\u2019s plodding, weary setting of \u2018Spleen\u2019 explodes into a magnificent climax. But the magical \u2018Barcarolle\u2019 which opens the Dix po\u00e9sies<\/em> compensates for Baudelaire\u2019s moodiness. Each of these ten songs reveals Strohl\u2019s superbly varied piano writing, ability to transcend poetic clich\u00e9s and effortless prosody \u2013 and are beautifully performed by Ad\u00e8le Charvet with Florian Caroubi.<\/p> Justice cannot be done in a few words to the discoveries on this revelatory double album, with high production values, starry musicians, and crystal-clear sound.
