The <strong>Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra<\/strong> under <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/who-is-simon-rattle\">Sir Simon Rattle<\/a><\/strong> also performs two Proms, with music by <strong>Bruckner <\/strong>and <strong>Mahler<\/strong>.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/5-simon-rattle-career-highlights\">Simon Rattle: five career highlights<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Marking the Year of Czech Music, <strong>Jakub Hr\u016f\u0161a<\/strong> conducts the <strong>Czech Philharmonic<\/strong> for two Proms of entirely Czech music. Marking their 25th anniversary, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-west-eastern-divan-orchestra\">West\u2013Eastern Divan Orchestra<\/a> <\/strong>returns to the BBC Proms under<strong> <\/strong>its co-founder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-is-daniel-barenboim\">Daniel Barenboim<\/a><\/strong>, with violinist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/anne-sophie-mutter-interview\">Anne-Sophie Mutter<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter joins Daniel Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Celebrating the best of British musicians and British creativity, the BBC\u2019s own ensembles perform in a total of 38 Proms, while a further 20 orchestras and over 25 choirs from all over the UK perform throughout the season. Highlights include the <strong>First Night of the Proms<\/strong> with the<strong> BBC Symphony Orchestra <\/strong>conducted by <strong>Elim Chan<\/strong>, featuring soloists <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-is-isata-kanneh-mason\">Isata Kanneh-Mason<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/sophie-bevan\">Sophie Bevan<\/a><\/strong> and the world premiere of <strong><em>Hallelujah Sim.<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Ben Nobuto. <\/strong><\/p><p>The <strong>BBC Concert Orchestra <\/strong>conducted by<strong> Edwin Outwater <\/strong>celebrates the work of film composer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/henry-mancini\">Henry Mancini<\/a><\/strong> and the <strong>BBC Philharmonic<\/strong> conducted by <strong>Nicholas Collon<\/strong> performs the world premiere of <strong>Anna Clyne\u2019s <em>The Gorgeous Nothings<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em> The <strong>BBC National Orchestra of Wales<\/strong> led by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/bbc-national-orchestra-wales-chooses-ryan-bancroft-next-principal-conductor\">Ryan Bancroft<\/a><\/strong> performs a double bill of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/arnold-schoenberg\">Schoenberg<\/a> <\/strong>and <strong>Zemlinsky<\/strong>. And <strong>Ilan Volkov <\/strong>conducts the <strong>BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra<\/strong> for the first UK performance of <strong>Mary Lou Williams\u2019s <em>Zodiac Suite<\/em><\/strong> alongside works by <strong>Duke Ellington <\/strong>and <strong>Anthony Braxton<\/strong>, with Braxton making his BBC Proms debut.\u00a0<\/p><p>In the 100th anniversary year of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-are-the-bbc-singers\">BBC Singers<\/a><\/strong>, the 2024 BBC Proms celebrates choral music and singing, with a special three-concert Choral Day reflecting a wide range of styles. The BBC Singers will perform in seven Proms this year, including both the First Night of the Proms and the Last Night of the Proms. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/the-bbc-reveals-future-of-the-bbc-singers\">The BBC reveals the future of the BBC Singers<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>They will also feature in the Berlin Philharmonic\u2019s Bruckner Prom and the world premiere of a piece specially written for them by <strong>Eric Whitacre<\/strong>. Further choral highlights across the summer include performances of <strong>Verdi\u2019s Requiem<\/strong>, <strong>Britten\u2019s War Requiem<\/strong><em> <\/em>and <strong>Bach\u2019s<em> <\/em>St John Passion<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p><p>More BBC Proms residencies launch across the UK, with a total of 17 Proms performed outside London. For the first time, a weekend-long BBC Proms festival launches at the newly opened <strong>Bristol Beacon<\/strong>. <strong>Paraorchestra <\/strong>makes their BBC Proms debut performing the world premiere of <strong><em>The Virtuous Circle<\/em><\/strong><em>,<\/em> <strong>Mozart\u2019s Symphony No. 40<\/strong> interspersed with new work by <strong>Oliver Vibrans<\/strong>, co-commissioned by the BBC. <\/p><p>The BBC Proms returns to Gateshead for a weekend-long residency at the <strong>Glasshouse International Centre for Music<\/strong>, and a brand-new Proms residency launches in venues across Nottingham, building on the <strong>BBC Concert Orchestra<\/strong>\u2019s ongoing residency in the area. Chamber concerts also take place in Aberdeen, Belfast and Newport. \u00a0<br\/><br\/>The 2024 BBC Proms also continues with the growing tradition of orchestral collaborations with non-classical artists and tributes to different musical genres. <strong>Florence Welch<\/strong>, of indie-rock band <strong>Florence + The Machine<\/strong>, makes her BBC Proms debut (and only UK appearance this year) to perform her lauded BRIT Award-winning 2009 album <em>Lungs<\/em>, with <strong>Jules Buckley<\/strong> and his orchestra. <strong>Jordan Rakei <\/strong>makes his BBC Proms debut with Robert Ames and the Royal Northern Sinfonia at the Glasshouse International Centre for Music. <\/p><p>Academy Award-winning artist <strong>Sam Smith <\/strong>makes their BBC Proms debut at the Royal Albert Hall, their only live UK appearance this year, performing their own music in new orchestral arrangements. After the success of the 2023 Northern Soul Prom, this year\u2019s opening weekend will feature the first ever <strong>Disco Prom<\/strong>, celebrating disco music of the late 1970s during the era of New York\u2019s Studio 54. <\/p><p>Three Proms pay tribute to the work and legacies of iconic musicians: folk-rock artist <strong>Nick Drake<\/strong>, jazz singer <strong>Sarah Vaughan<\/strong> and film composer <strong>Henry Mancini<\/strong>, each of whom have significant anniversaries this year and whose Proms will feature exciting soloists. <strong>Tinariwen <\/strong>performs a Late Night Prom, featuring their pioneering mix of traditional Tuareg and African music with Western rock music.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Once again, every single concert at the 2024 BBC Proms will be broadcast on <strong>BBC Radio 3<\/strong>. Other BBC Radio networks, including Radio 1 and Radio 2, will broadcast highlights. This year, 24 concerts will be broadcast on TV and BBC iPlayer, from the First Night of the Proms, presented by Clive Myrie, right through to the world-famous Last Night of the Proms, presented by Katie Derham.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>A roster of debut soloists includes pianist <strong>Yunchan Lim<\/strong>, cellist <strong>Anastasia Kobekina<\/strong>, clarinettist <strong>Anthony McGill <\/strong>and sopranos <strong>Latonia Moore<\/strong> and <strong>Angel Blue<\/strong>. Star soloists returning to the BBC Proms include<strong> Yo-Yo Ma<\/strong> with<strong> Leonidas Kavakos <\/strong>and <strong>Emanuel Ax<\/strong>, <strong>Jamie Barton<\/strong>, <strong>Sheku Kanneh-Mason<\/strong>, <strong>Patricia Kopatchinskaja<\/strong> and <strong>V\u00edkingur \u00d3lafsson<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p><p>The season culminates in the <strong>Last Night of the Proms<\/strong> with the <strong>BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus <\/strong>and<strong> BBC Singers<\/strong>. This year\u2019s festival finale is led by <strong>Sakari Oramo<\/strong>, who is joined by <strong>Sir Stephen Hough<\/strong> and <strong>Angel Blue<\/strong>. Alongside traditional Last Night of the Proms favourites, audiences can enjoy the world premiere of a new work by <strong>Carlos Simon<\/strong>, commissioned by the BBC.\u00a0<\/p><p>Continuing a commitment to championing new music, some 23 premieres and BBC commissions \/ co-commissions will be performed at the 2024 BBC Proms.
