It\u2019s a festival with year-round global aspirations that, two decades since its foundation, boasts a performance of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/gustav-mahler\">Mahler<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Symphony No. 2 in Paris and, in December, new music inspired by the paintings of Bob Peak at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The teaching faculty unites players from the philharmonics of Vienna and Berlin, while conductors Manfred Honeck and Elias Grandy follow in the footsteps of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/bernard-haitink\">Bernard Haitink<\/a><\/strong> and Riccardo Muti, among others. The resident Saito Kinen Orchestra celebrates its 40th birthday. Yet at the same time a sense of loss is inescapable \u2013 the festival\u2019s founder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/conductor-seiji-ozawa-has-died-aged-88\">Seiji Ozawa<\/a><\/strong> died in February, and his guiding spirit will be missed. <\/p><p>Shouldering the conducting are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-is-andris-nelsons-and-best-recordings\">Andris Nelsons<\/a><\/strong> and Nodoka Okisawa (only recently appointed principal guest conductor by Ozawa). The latter undertakes the opening concerts coupling <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/felix-mendelssohn\">Mendelssohn<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/richard-strauss\">Richard Strauss<\/a><\/strong>. She also masterminds the opera choice: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/giacomo-puccini\">Puccini<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Gianni Schicchi<\/em>.
