Whilst his First (1801) pays its respects to the 18th-century classical tradition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/joseph-haydn\/\"><strong>Haydn<\/strong><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/mozart\/\">Mozart<\/a><\/strong>, each of the eight successive Beethoven symphonies follows a unique trajectory heralding a new era: composers were no longer subservient to their court patrons and could assert their right to individual expression. <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/tag\/beethoven-reviews\/\"><strong>Read reviews of the latest Beethoven recordings here<\/strong><\/a><\/li><li><strong><a class=\"standard-card-new__article-title\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/how-many-symphonies-did-beethoven-write\/\">How many symphonies did Beethoven write?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>So it\u2019s little wonder that Beethoven\u2019s colossal symphonic legacy both inspired and intimidated later 19th-century composers. From the moment these works entered the repertory, conductors viewed the performance of a Beethoven cycle as a litmus test of their achievements.<\/p><script src=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/players\/xjL98ot4-lqFafnwo.js\"\/><p>Battle lines as to the \u2018ideal\u2019 interpretation of the symphonies were established at an early stage between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/felix-mendelssohn\"><strong>Mendelssohn<\/strong><\/a>, whose performances were mercurial and precise, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/richard-wagner\">Wagner<\/a>\u2019<\/strong>s more fluid and nuanced approaches. But Kempe\u2019s is a glorious <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/guide-beethovens-symphony-no-3-eroica\/\">Eroica<\/a><\/strong>, powerful and majestic, yet buoyed with lyricism and elegance. The rhythms are crisp and vital, the colours gorgeous, the expression intense and broad-ranging, and all is captured in superb recorded sound. <\/p><p>The fact that Chailly and the Gewandhaus make a second appearance in this list tells you all you need to know: theirs is an excellent cycle of the Beethoven symphonies.
