Today, he enjoys a multi-stranded career combining the role of performer \u2013 as sub-principal bassoon of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/chineke-orchestra-what-the-bme-ensemble-is-doing-to-shine-a-light-on-the-lack-of-diversity-in-classical-music\">Chineke!<\/a><\/strong> Orchestra and artistic associate of the Multi-Story Orchestra \u2013 with that of broadcaster, hosting <em>Classical Fix<\/em>, the friendly, musically omnivorous podcast on BBC Radio 3, and also regularly presenting <em>Radio 3 in Concert<\/em>. Driving across the Pennines from our home in the Wirral to see my dad\u2019s family in Sheffield, my six brothers and sisters all squashed into the back seat, we\u2019d all sing along to \u2018Buffalo Soldier\u2019. I love all of Bob Marley\u2019s music, but the message in these lyrics is particularly poignant.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-grieg-peer-gynt\"><strong>Grieg: <em>Peer Gynt<\/em><\/strong><\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bergen-philharmonic-edward-gardner\">Bergen Philharmonic\/Edward Gardner <\/h4><p><em>Chandos CHSA 5190<\/em><\/p><p>I first fell in love with classical music when I heard the theme tune to the Alton Towers TV advert \u2013 \u2018In the Hall of the Mountain King\u2019 from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/edvard-grieg\">Grieg<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s<em> Peer Gynt<\/em>. It made me want to go out and find out more, so I took myself off to Bebington Library, where I looked up instruments on Encarta 95, and followed up with complete works on CD. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/edvard-grieg\">The best works by Grieg<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>I was playing the oboe at eight thanks to Wirral Schools Music Service, which was amazing in the early 1990s. They did <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-pitch\">pitch<\/a><\/strong> tests in Year 4 and those with the highest score were offered instrumental tuition.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-does-it-mean-if-you-have-perfect-pitch\">What does it mean to have perfect pitch?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>I played the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/oboe-vs-clarinet\">oboe<\/a><\/strong> for three years but I\u2019d seen a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/the-bassoon-a-guide-to-the-orchestras-largest-wind-instrument\">bassoon<\/a><\/strong> on Encarta and was fascinated by this strange instrument. Inspired by Dukas\u2019 <em>Sorcerer\u2019s Apprentice<\/em> I asked the teacher if I could change instruments, but she said I was too small! <\/p><p>When I was 16 a friend told me the youth orchestra needed a bassoon, so I jumped at the chance to take lessons. I practised hard and I was enthusiastic, so I was given lots of opportunities to play.\u00a0<\/p><p>Since then I have forged my own path; I haven\u2019t focussed on being a soloist \u2013 there are not many solo bassoonists \u2013 but I\u2019ve managed to do things I love. As well as playing with Chineke! and other orchestras, I\u2019m involved in broadcasting and social activism (chairing the Musicians\u2019 Union Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee) \u2013 I\u2019m lucky I\u2019ve been able to make space to do it all.<\/p><p><strong>You can see pictures of Linton Stephens and other classical music stars in our photo gallery from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/bbc-music-magazine-awards-2023-photo-gallery\">2023 BBC Music Magazine Awards<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-weber-andante-and-hungarian-rondo\"><strong>Weber<\/strong>: <strong>Andante and Hungarian Rondo<\/strong><\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-karen-geoghegan-bassoon-orchestra-of-opera-north-benjamin-wallfisch\">Karen Geoghegan (bassoon); Orchestra of Opera North\/Benjamin Wallfisch<\/h4><p><em>Chandos CHAN 10477<\/em><\/p><p>I picked up my first CD of bassoon music at HMV in Liverpool, by Yoshiyuki Nakanishi. Hearing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/carl-maria-von-weber\">Carl Maria von Weber<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Andante and Hungarian Rondo<\/em>, I had no idea the bassoon could sound so virtuosic. When I found a French edition, I was able to get my fingers around the music and I thought, \u2018I can actually do this!\u2019 It\u2019s an amazing piece \u2013 it\u2019s got fireworks, a bassoony melody in the Rondo and a singing quality in the opening of the <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-andante\">Andante<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. <\/p><p>In 2013, I went to study in Weimar with Frank Forst, and I performed it in one of our bassoon class concerts. It\u2019s a challenging piece \u2013 the last bit is super fast, with rapid tonguing \u2013 but I\u2019m happy I performed it as the culmination of my studies.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-brahms-symphony-no-2\"><strong>Brahms<\/strong> <strong>Symphony No. 2<\/strong><\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-leipzig-gewandhaus-herbert-blomstedt\">Leipzig Gewandhaus\/Herbert Blomstedt<\/h4><p><em>Pentatone PTC5186851<\/em><\/p><p>When I was in music college I took part in the BBC Philharmonic\u2019s access scheme and played with them in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/johannes-brahms\">Brahms<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Symphony No. 2. I had played it as first bassoon with the Merseyside Youth Orchestra, so sitting with the BBC Phil and playing the first bassoon part was an incredible moment for a young lad who\u2019d only been playing for a year or two. <\/p><ul><li>Brahms features in our lists of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/50-greatest-composers-all-time\">greatest composers<\/a><\/strong> of all time, and (of course) <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/the-best-german-composers-of-all-time\">greatest German composers<\/a><\/strong> of all time<\/li><li>... but how many of his symphonies made our list of the 20 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/20-greatest-symphonies-all-time\">greatest symphonies<\/a><\/strong>?<\/li><\/ul><p>Fast forward a couple of years and it happened to be the first piece I played professionally, as second bassoon with the BBC Philharmonic in Huddersfield Town Hall. It was my gateway to the profession.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-michelle-branch-everywhere\"><strong>Michelle Branch<\/strong>: <strong>Everywhere<\/strong><\/h3><p>Michelle Branch\u2019s \u2018Everywhere\u2019\u00a0 came out when I was 16, and it was the piece that defined the summer before I turned into an adult. Now, if life feels a bit heavy for me, that is the album I\u2019ll put on to remind me of a simpler time. The song feels like summer and sunshine: a time when I was free of school and responsibility and the days went on for ever.
