But there will also be some relatively short-haul journeys, including visits to the Regency era of early 19th century England and &#8211; in the Devil\u2019s Chord episode &#8211; to the 1960s.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/tv-and-film-music\/bridgerton-season-3-release-date-music-composer-plot\"><strong>Bridgerton Season 3: release date, music, composer, plot and more<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-which-doctor-who-episodes-have-featured-music\"><strong>Which <em>Doctor Who <\/em>episodes have featured music?<\/strong><\/h2><p>All of the <em>Doctor Who<\/em> episodes have featured music to a greater or lesser extent, but one in particular &#8211; <em>The Devil&#8217;s Chord &#8211; <\/em>was all about music.<\/p><p>By the way, <em>Doctor Who<\/em> featured strongly in our list of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/best-television-theme-tunes\"><strong>the best TV theme tunes<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-happened-in-the-devil-s-chord-episode\"><strong>What happened in the Devil&#8217;s Chord episode?<\/strong><\/h2><p>When Ruby &#8211; a huge Beatles fan &#8211; asks the Doctor to guide the Tardis to 1960s, they land in Abbey Road Studios, during the recording of The Beatles\u2019 first album. However, the pair quickly realise that something is wrong: humankind has mysteriously lost the ability to create soulful music, not least the Beatles, who sound horrendous.<\/p><p>The culprit behind all this is Maestro: a devil-like villain, who possesses the ability to literally suck the musical essence out of people and hoard it for himself, creating a world devoid of music.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/tv-and-film-music\/guide-music-downton-abbey\"><strong>Downton Abbey: our guide to the soundtrack and composer of the hit TV show and film<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-music-was-featured-in-this-doctor-who-episode\"><strong>What music was featured in this <em>Doctor Who<\/em> episode?<\/strong><\/h2><p>The episode opens with a discussion of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/ludwig-van-beethoven\">Beethoven<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Moonlight Sonata. <\/em>At one point an old woman tries to distract Maestro by playing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/claude-debussy\">Debussy<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Clair de Lune <\/em>on her piano and there are a few other snippets of classical music including <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/george-gershwin\">Gershwin<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Rhapsody in Blue <\/em>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/camille-saint-saens\">Saint-Sa\u00ebns<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Danse Macabre <\/em>&#8211; a piece that is itself centred around the Devil\u2019s Chord.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/top-20-beethoven-works\">Best of Beethoven: top 20 Beethoven works<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/debussy-for-beginners-the-best-works-by-debussy-to-introduce-to-classical-music-newcomers\">Debussy for beginners: best recordings for newcomers<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>There are also a few extracts from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/jazz\/jazz-music-what-it-is-and-how-it-evolved\">jazz<\/a><\/strong> and ragtime tunes. But despite the fact that characters from The Beatles &#8211; in particular Paul McCartney and John Lennon &#8211; feature heavily throughout the episode, we don\u2019t hear a single track from the iconic band: the rights were too expensive. So instead, as Doctor and Ruby wander through 1963, we hear a song by the sixties duo Ashford and Simpson, called \u2018California Soul\u2019 by Ashford and Simpson.<\/p><p>Maestro briefly plays the theme song of \u201cDoctor Who\u201d on the piano. Later on in the episode, the Doctor and Ruby play \u201cThe Life of Sunday &#8211; Ruby\u2019s Theme\u2019\u00a0 &#8211; a song by the composer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/who-composed-the-theme-tune-to-doctor-who\">Murray Gold<\/a><\/strong>, who wrote most of the music for <em>Doctor Who<\/em> from 2005 to 2017.\u00a0<\/p><p>In between, there are a lot of bum notes, which makes sense given that this is an episode about music being used for the forces of evil. And, talking of evil, towards the end, Doctor and Ruby actually get trapped inside musical instruments, which, unlike the Tardis, are no more roomy on the inside than they appear to be on the outside.\u00a0<\/p><p>But luckily, Lennon and McCartney are there to save the day, restoring peace, and good music, to the world, with a final chord.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/tv-and-film-music\/the-handmaids-tale-soundtrack-who-wrote-the-music-and-can-you-buy-the-score\"><strong>The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale soundtrack: who wrote the music and can you buy the score?<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-and-the-devil-s-chord-where-does-that-come-into-the-story\"><strong>And the Devil&#8217;s Chord? Where does that come into the story?<\/strong><\/h2><p>Right at the beginning of the episode, when a piano teacher tries to liven up a lesson by playing it to his bored pupil. As soon as he does, the piano lid suddenly drops; a knocking is heard from inside; and Maestro emerges from the lid. And what does it sound like?<\/strong><\/h2><p>It\u2019s an evil-sounding chord in which the interval between two notes is a diminished fifth (six semitones, or, in other words, one semitone less than a perfect fifth.) It goes by many other names, including the tritone and the flattened fifth. It has been said that music featuring this interval was banned from churches because of its association with the devil.
