Given many had little choice but to serve their country at some point during the 1914-18 conflict, it\u2019s no wonder that composers did their bit too.<\/strong> <strong>Here are some of the gifted composers who tragically died during World War 1.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/gustav-holst\/\">Holst<\/a> <\/strong>wanted to serve, but was thought too old and unfit. He did visit Eastern Front troops in a musical capacity, though, so did his bit. Then there\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/maurice-ravel\/\">Ravel<\/a><\/strong>, who was also not allowed to join up as he was too slight \u2013 he went anyway, helping medical teams. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/alban-berg\/\">Berg<\/a><\/strong> was also considered unfit for service, instead doing his bit with the Austrian War Ministry. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/ralph-vaughan-williams\/\">Vaughan Williams<\/a><\/strong> lied about his age, pretending to be younger, so he could serve as a private in the Army.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-group highlight-box is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/the-last-post-what-are-its-origins-and-when-is-it-played\/\">The Last Post: what is its history and why is it played during Remembrance Day?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/what-are-the-lyrics-to-the-poem-for-the-fallen-we-will-remember-them\/\">What are the lyrics to the poem &#8216;For The Fallen&#8217; (&#8216;We Will Remember Them&#8217;)?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/was-1910-19-the-best-decade-for-english-music\/\">Was 1910-19 the best decade for English music?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><p>Some, like EJ Morean and Ivor Gurney, made it through by the skin of their teeth; they returned home with their lives, even if they did so with physical and mental scars. Others were not so fortunate, as the following list attests. Many died in battle, others \u2013 like Granados \u2013 were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Then there are those who suffered ill health as a result of what they\u2019d seen and where they\u2019d been.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-which-composers-died-during-world-war-1\">Which composers died during World War 1?<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-william-denis-browne\"><strong>William Denis Browne<\/strong><\/h3><p>Died 1915, at Gallipoli. Browne is said to be the first composer to die in the First World War and at his own behest, very few of his works survived. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rudi-stephan\"><strong>Rudi Stephan<\/strong><\/h3><p>Died 1915, when he was hit by a sniper on the Eastern Front. Stephan was one of Germany\u2019s most prominent and promising young composers. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-george-butterworth\"><strong>George Butterworth<\/strong><\/h3><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/george-butterworth\/\">George Butterworth<\/a><\/strong> died in 1916, aged 31, when he was hit by a sniper during the Battle of the Somme. He was posthumously awarded a medal for bravery. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-enrique-granados\"><strong>Enrique Granados<\/strong><\/h3><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/enrique-granados\/\">Enrique Granados <\/a><\/strong>died in 1916, after the ship he was travelling on was torpedoed in the English Channel. He and his wife drowned. He had stuffed gold into his belt, which didn\u2019t help. It probably seemed like a good idea at the time. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a class=\"standard-card-new__article-title\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/how-did-enrique-granados-die\/\">How did Enrique Granados die?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-frederick-kelly\"><strong>Frederick Kelly<\/strong><\/h3><p>Died 1916, in the Battle of the Somme. The Australian composer was also a gold medal-winning Olympic rower. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-willie-b-manson\"><strong>Willie B. Manson<\/strong><\/h3><p>Died 1916, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Manson was from New Zealand and studied at the Royal Academy of Music (one of the <a class=\"standard-card-new__article-title\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/what-are-the-best-music-colleges-and-conservatoires-in-the-world\/\"> <strong>best music colleges and conservatoires in the world<\/strong><\/a>). <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-more-composers-who-died-during-world-war-1\">More composers who died during World War 1<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-francis-purcell-warren\"><strong>Francis Purcell Warren<\/strong><\/h3><p>Died 1916, at Mons. He was presumed dead after being missing for some time. Purcell Warren was actually a violinist who studied at the Royal College of Music, though he also composed. He was acquainted with Herbert Howells. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-george-jerrard-wilkinson\"><strong>George Jerrard Wilkinson<\/strong><\/h3><p>Died 1916, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme at Beaumont Hamel. Wilkinson was a composer and a notable folk dancer. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fernand-gustave-halphen\"><strong>Fernand Gustave Halphen<\/strong><\/h3><p>Died 1917, from ill health while serving in a French territorial regiment \u2013 he was too old to serve at the front. Halphen was a composer and violinist. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-frank-maurice-jephson\"><strong>Frank Maurice Jephson<\/strong><\/h3><p>Died 1917. Jephson was an organist and composer. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-georges-antoine\"><strong>Georges Antoine<\/strong><\/h3><p>Died 1918, from ill health a few days after the war ended. Antoine was a Belgian composer and pianist. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/war-songs-ten-of-the-most-famous-songs-about-war\">War songs: ten of the most stirring songs about war<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cecil-coles\"><strong>Cecil Coles<\/strong><\/h3><p>Died 1918, near to the Somme while attempting to rescue other casualties. Coles was a pupil\/protege of Gustav Holst and in 1917 he sent Holst a blood-spattered copy of a work he penned while in the trenches \u2013 <em>Behind the Lines<\/em>. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ernest-bristow-farrar\"><strong>Ernest Bristow Farrar<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><\/h3><p>Died 1918, at Ephey Ronnssoy, near the Somme. Farrar was Gerald Finzi\u2019s composition teacher. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-herbert-matheson\"><strong>Herbert Matheson<\/strong><\/h3><p>Died 1918, on the Western Front.
