They will also be performing at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/bbc-proms\/2024-bbc-proms-listings\"><strong>2024 BBC Proms<\/strong><\/a>. And this one is a special one: in 2024, the group marks its 100th birthday. <\/p><script src=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/players\/YCjcY8vg-lqFafnwo.js\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-are-the-bbc-singers\"><strong>Who are the BBC Singers?<\/strong><\/h2><p>They are Britain's only full-time professional chamber choir. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-are-they-based\"><strong>Where are they based?<\/strong><\/h2><p>The group is are based at the BBC's Maida Vale Studios in London, but performs all over the UK and abroad.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mozart performed from home by the BBC Singers &amp; members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j-dv4rLOV5U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-were-the-bbc-singers-founded\"><strong>When were the BBC Singers founded?<\/strong><\/h2><p>In 1924 a choir was brought together by the BBC for a performance of Rutland Boughton's <em>Immortal Hour<\/em>. Known then as the 'Wireless Chorus', it was soon established as a full-time professional choir. A few years later, in 1927, the Corporation plucked some members from the Wireless Chorus for performances that required fewer performers. These became known as the 'Wireless Singers', later (in 1934) renamed as the 'BBC Singers'.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-group highlight-box is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/bbc-singers-names-new-chief-conductor\/\"><b>BBC Singers names new chief conductor<\/b><\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/bbc-singers-celebrate-90\/\"><b>BBC Singers celebrate 90th birthday<\/b><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-that-the-end-of-the-story\"><strong>Is that the end of the story?<\/strong><\/h2><p>No. That same year, the Wireless Singers were split into two octets: Singers A, who specialised in less standard repertoire, such as Renaissance polyphony and madrigals; and Singers B, who sang light music and revue numbers. Singers A were generally paid about \u00a31 more than Singers B.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"BBC Singers 90th Birthday Film\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iLsdMz11ZqA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>It wasn't until 1961 that the A\/B division was scrapped and the choir reemerged as a single force of 28 voices under yet another new name: the BBC Chorus. Finally, following the appointment of John Poole as chorus master in 1972, the choir reverted to its previous name. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-is-their-current-chief-conductor\"><strong>Who is their current chief conductor?<\/strong><\/h2><p>The Swedish choral conductor and mezzo-soprano Sofi Jeannin, who is the first woman to hold the post with this choir. He went on to become the composer's lifelong partner. Other past members include the mezzo soprano <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/artists\/\">Sarah Connolly<\/a><\/strong> and the composer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/seven-questions-for-judith-bingham\/\">Judith Bingham<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-five-great-bbc-singers-performances\"><strong>Five great BBC Singers performances<\/strong><\/h2><p>We have celebrated with a round-up of five fantastic BBC Singers performances from around the web.<\/p><p><strong>1. Gustav Holst:\u00a0<em>Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>From the moment they gave their first world premiere \u2013\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/gustav-holst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Holst<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Morning of the Year<\/em>\u00a0in 1927 \u2013 the BBC Singers have held an unrivalled position at the forefront of contemporary choral performance. And Holst has remained a favourite with the choir. The concert included a focus on their associate composers, Judith Bingham, Edward Cowie and Gabriel Jackson.
