In fact, that wonderful recording, featuring among other things a revelatory recording of Vaughan Williams&#8217;s Tallis Fantasia, went on to win our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/awards\/2024-awards\/bbc-music-magazine-awards-2024-winners-announced\">Recording of the Year<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><script src=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/players\/xjL98ot4-lqFafnwo.js\"\/><p>On the other hand, Wilson is also a superb conductor of light music, sounds from Hollywood's Golden Age, and songs from the musicals. He cropped up again in our 2024 Awards, in fact, winning the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/awards\/2024-awards\/opera-award-2024\">Opera<\/a><\/strong> category for a fabulous recording of Rodgers and Hammerstein's stage musical <em>Oklahoma<\/em>!.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/best-stage-musicals-of-all-time\">15 of the best stage musicals of all time<\/a><\/strong> <\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-is-john-wilson\"><strong>Who is John Wilson?<\/strong><\/h2><p>John Wilson, a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/bbc-proms-2022-full-concert-listings\/\">BBC Proms<\/a><\/strong> favourite, is a British conductor, arranger and musical scholar probably best known for his hugely popular programmes of light music - which he often performs with his own ensemble, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/classicalmusic.production.wcp.imdserve.com\/features\/articles\/five-best-john-wilson-proms\/\">John Wilson Orchestra<\/a><\/strong>. But, as a guest conductor of several leading orchestras (including Associate Guest Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra), he is also comfortable with standard classical repertoire. In 2021 he caused a stir at the BBC Proms with his re-established orchestra, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/bbc-proms\/\">Sinfonia of London<\/a><\/strong>, and a programme conjuring up the world of fin-de-si\u00e8cle Vienna. With help from his musical mother, he taught himself to play the piano, and later took up the percussion at school. Then, in the 1980s, he studied Music A level at Newcastle College, where he cut his teeth as a conductor, putting together and conducting various ensembles, including a 96-piece orchestra for a concert version of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/west-side-story-our-guide-to-bernsteins-original-1957-musical\/\"><em>West Side Story.<\/em><\/a><\/strong> <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-did-he-train\"><strong>Where did he train?<\/strong><\/h2><p>At the Royal College of Music, initially as a percussionist and later studying composition and conducting. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2017\/apr\/20\/john-wilson-conductor-oklahama-proms-bbcsso?CMP=gu_com\"><strong>In a <em>Guardian <\/em>interview from 2017<\/strong><\/a> he recalls: 'I went from being almost thrown out at the end of my first year to winning the Tagore Gold Medal [the college\u2019s most prestigious award for students]. They just let me do my thing.' <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-did-he-found-the-john-wilson-orchestra\"><strong>When did he found the John Wilson Orchestra?<\/strong><\/h2><p>Wilson founded his eponymous orchestra in 1994, when he was just 22. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-kind-of-light-music-does-he-conduct-exactly\"><strong>What kind of light music does he conduct exactly?<\/strong><\/h2><p>Mostly hits from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/tv-and-film-music\/best-film-musicals-of-all-time\/\">Golden age of Hollywood<\/a><\/strong>. And he argues that these are as serious in their craft as a Brahms symphony or a song by Schubert, conducting them with an attention to detail and seriousness of purpose that has done a huge amount for their reputation. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-and-in-terms-of-standard-repertoire\"><strong>And in terms of standard repertoire?<\/strong><\/h2><p>His tastes are broad but he has a particularly soft spot for British music: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/which-is-the-best-vaughan-williams-symphony\/\">Vaughan Williams<\/a><\/strong>, Delius, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/five-essential-works-elgar\/\">Elgar<\/a><\/strong> and others. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-can-i-next-hear-him\"><strong>Where can I next hear him?<\/strong><\/h2><p>At the <strong>BBC Proms on Sunday 4 August 2024<\/strong>, with the Sinfonia of London once again, in an all-American programme. You'll hear Wynton Marsalis's\u00a0<em>Herald, Holler and Hallelujah!<\/em>\u00a0<em>(UK premiere<\/em>) and\u00a0Aaron <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/aaron-copland\">Copland<\/a><\/strong>'s\u00a0<em>Billy the Kid \u2013 suite<\/em>. These will be joined by Samuel\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/samuel-barber\">Barber<\/a><\/strong>'s\u00a0much-loved Adagio for strings and George\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/george-gershwin\">Gershwin<\/a><\/strong>'s<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>Rhapsody in Blue<\/em>.
