Once again, some of the world&#8217;s finest orchestras, choirs, conductors and performers will be descending on London this summer. Not just London, in fact. This year, the Proms are spreading their wings as far as Gateshead, Bristol, Newport, Belfast, Aberdeen and Nottingham. Here&#8217;s our guide to some of the 2024 Proms performers to look out for. And don&#8217;t forget to check out our full <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/bbc-proms\/2024-bbc-proms-listings\"><strong>2024 Proms schedule<\/strong><\/a> elsewhere on the site. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-is-performing-at-the-2024-bbc-proms\"><strong>Who is performing at the 2024 BBC Proms?<\/strong><\/h2><p>Let&#8217;s take a look at a few of the orchestras, choirs, conductors and performers appearing at this year&#8217;s Proms. NB this is not a comprehensive list: for full listings visit our 2024 Proms schedule linked above.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2024-bbc-proms-performers-orchestras\"><strong>2024 BBC Proms performers: orchestras <\/strong><\/h3><p>Here are some of the orchestras performing at the 2024 Proms. <\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-berlin-philharmonic\"><strong>Berlin Philharmonic<\/strong><\/h4><p>Indisputably one of the world&#8217;s greatest orchestras, the Berlin Phil look in for two back-to-back concerts. On Saturday 31 August, the orchestra and conductor Kirill Petrenko are joined by pianist V\u00edkingur \u00d3lafsson for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/robert-schumann\">Robert Schumann<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0Piano Concerto and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/smetana-bedrich\">Smetana<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>M\u00e1 vlast<\/em>. The following day, they are joined by the BBC Singers for an all-Bruckner evening, featuring the motets <em>Os justi<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Locus iste<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Christus factus est<\/em>, plus his monumental Symphony No. 5.<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-royal-northern-sinfonia\"><strong>Royal Northern Sinfonia<\/strong><\/h4><p>Based at the Sage Gateshead, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/queen-bestows-royal-title-northern-sinfonia\/\">Royal Northern Sinfonia<\/a><\/strong> will, as last year, be performing a trio of concerts at their home venue. These include French\/Finnish\/Czech menu on Friday 26 July, when they perform Germaine Tailleferre&#8217;s\u00a0Little Suite for Orchestra<em>,\u00a0<\/em><strong>Sibelius<\/strong>&#8216;s chilly, atmospheric\u00a0Violin Concerto, and\u00a0<strong>Dvo\u0159\u00e1k<\/strong>&#8216;s joyous\u00a0Symphony No. 8.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night's Dream Op. 21 || Royal Northern Sinfonia\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BFVQojI5gTs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-halle\"><strong>The Hall\u00e9<\/strong><\/h4><p>Manchester\u2019s Hall\u00e9 Orchestra has been around since 1857. Its long and storied past includes the premiere performance of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/edward-elgar\/\">Elgar<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Symphony No. 1. Later, under conductor John Barbirolli, the Hall\u00e9 became a world-famous band.<\/p><p>It&#8217;s currently enjoying another golden age under <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/mark-elder\">Sir Mark Elder<\/a><\/strong>, and is noted particularly (as in the Barbirolli era) for its performances of English repertoire. At the Proms, you&#8217;ll hear the whole Hall\u00e9 family (Hall\u00e9 Children\u2019s Choir, Hall\u00e9 Youth Choir, Hall\u00e9 Choir, and the Hall\u00e9 orchestra itself) play Prom 4 on Sunday 21 July, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/james-macmillan-2\">James MacMillan<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>Timotheus, Bacchus and Cecilia<\/em> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/gustav-mahler\"><strong>Mahler<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0Symphony No. 5.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/which-is-the-best-mahler-symphony\">Which is the best Mahler symphony?<\/a><\/strong> <\/li><\/ul><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-city-of-birmingham-symphony-orchestra\"><strong>City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra<\/strong><\/h4><p>The CBSO was formed under its current name in 1920, although orchestras have been performing in Birmingham since 1740. The CBSO&#8217;s past conductors include Adrian Boult, Sakari Oramo and, famously, Sir <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/who-is-simon-rattle\">Simon Rattle<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><p>The CBSO makes one appearance at the 2024 BBC Proms. On Thursday 22 August, for Prom 43, the CBSO and their chief conductor Kazuki Yamada joins forces with pianist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-is-paul-lewis\">Paul Lewis<\/a><\/strong> for a programme including <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/maurice-ravel\">Ravel<\/a>&#8216;s<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Mother Goose \u2013 suite<\/em> and the final Piano Concerto, No. 27, by\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/mozart\">Mozart<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p><p>The programme also includes <em>Ludus pro patria \u2013 \u2018La nuit et l\u2019amour\u2019<\/em> by French composer Augusta Holm\u00e8s, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/modest-musorgsky\">Mussorgsky<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0colourful, evocative suite, <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/pictures-at-an-exhibition-musorgsky-guide-best-recordings\">Pictures at an Exhibition<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. <em>Pictures <\/em>has had various different orchestrations &#8211; suitably, the CBSO will perform the orchestration made by the conductor and legendary Proms founder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/who-was-sir-henry-wood\">Sir Henry Wood<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Conductor Kazuki Yamada leads the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in Ravel, Mozart, Mussorgsky and more<\/figcaption><\/figure><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bbc-symphony-orchestra\"><strong>BBC Symphony Orchestra<\/strong><\/h4><p>One of the five BBC orchestras &#8211; along with the BBC Philharmonic, BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/bbc-national-orchestra-wales-celebrates-its-90th-birthday\/\"><strong>BBC National Orchestra of Wales<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; the BBC Symphony gets the honour of performing at both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/bbc-proms\/first-night-of-the-proms\/\"><strong>First Night of the Proms<\/strong><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/bbc-proms\/last-night-of-the-proms-all-you-need-to-know\/\"><strong>Last Night of the Proms<\/strong><\/a>. But they also appear at Prom 8 (Wed 24 July), a celebration of the music of Nick Drake. For Prom 14 (Thur 29 July), they perform <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/ludwig-van-beethoven\">Beethoven<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major \u2018Emperor\u2019\u00a0and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/anton-bruckner\">Bruckner<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0Symphony No. 1 in conjunction with pianist Yunchan Lim and under the baton of conductor Paavo J\u00e4rvi.<\/p><p>On Saturday 3 Aug, they&#8217;re back with an all-English programme featuring <strong>Jonathan Harvey<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>Tranquil Abiding<\/em> and\u00a0Elgar&#8217;s\u00a0much-loved Cello Concerto, along with <em>The Cloud Messenger<\/em> by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/gustav-holst\">Holst<\/a><\/strong>. The soloist for that one is contralto Jess Dandy. ANd for Prom 27 on Friday 9 August, the BBC SO present\u00a0<em>Mirage<\/em> by the late Finnish composer Ka<strong>i<\/strong>ja<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/kaija-saariaho-best-works\">Saariaho<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0plus <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/mozart\">Mozart<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0Piano Concerto No. 9 in E flat major \u2018Jeunehomme\u2019 and Richard<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/richard-strauss\">Strauss<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s<em>\u00a0An Alpine Symphony<\/em>.<\/p><p>On Sunday 18 August, for Prom 38, they give us <strong>Dukas<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>The Sorcerer\u2019s Apprentice <\/em>plus the UK premiere<em> <\/em>of\u00a0<strong>Francisco Coll&#8217;s <\/strong>Cello Concerto with cellist Sol Gabetta. Also on the programme are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/giacomo-puccini\">Puccini<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0Preludio sinfonico, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/igor-stravinsky\">Stravinsky<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>Firebird Suite <\/em>(1945 version). <\/p><p><strong>Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra<\/strong><\/p><p>Under current artistic director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/kirill-karabits-to-assume-new-role-with-bournemouth-symphony-orchestra\/\"><strong>Kirill Karabits<\/strong><\/a>, the BSO is enjoying a very fruitful era. For the 2024 Proms, they appear in their second home, Bristol, for a concert at the Bristol Beacon on 25 August, featuring Jennifer Higdon&#8217;s\u00a0Percussion Concerto (with soloist Evelyn Glennie) and<strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/pyotr-ilyich-tchaikovsky\">Tchaikovsky<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0Symphony No. 5. <\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-aurora-orchestra\"><strong>Aurora Orchestra<\/strong><\/h4><p>Formed in 2004, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auroraorchestra.com\/\"><strong>Aurora Orchestra<\/strong><\/a> was the first orchestra to perform whole symphonies from memory as a regular feature of its artistic output. And it will be doing just that on Wednesday 21 August (Prom 42) , playing Beethoven&#8217;s monumental <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/guide-beethovens-symphony-no-9\">Symphony No. 9<\/a><\/strong> from memory. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a class=\"standard-card-new__article-title\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/musical-memory-why-are-orchestras-learning-symphonies-heart\/\">Musical memory | Why are orchestras learning symphonies off by heart?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony from memory at the BBC Proms \/\/ Aurora Orchestra\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/19eFK5VuDvk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chineke\"><strong>Chineke!<\/strong><\/h4><p>Chi-chi Nwanoku&#8217;s trailblazing orchestra is providing a platform for brilliant musicians from the black, Asian and ethnically diverse community who aren&#8217;t getting the performance opportunities they deserve elsewhere. In this way, Chineke! has kickstarted the careers of artists including cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason and trumpeter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-is-aaron-akugbo\">Aaron Akugbo<\/a><\/strong>. Bassoonist and Radio 3 presenter Lynton Stephens is also a regular performer with the orchestra. .<\/p><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/chineke-orchestra-what-the-bme-ensemble-is-doing-to-shine-a-light-on-the-lack-of-diversity-in-classical-music\/\">Chineke!<\/a><\/strong> returns for the 2024 Proms for Prom 66 (Sunday 8 September), in company with pianist Stewart Goodyear. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2024-proms-performers-choirs\"><strong>2024 Proms performers: choirs<\/strong><\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bbc-singers\"><strong>BBC Singers<\/strong><\/h4><p>Britain&#8217;s only full-time professional chamber choir, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-are-the-bbc-singers\/\">BBC Singers<\/a><\/strong> made headline news in 2023 when the BBC announced that the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/bbc-singers-to-be-disbanded-following-bbc-classical-review\/\">Singers would be disbanded<\/a><\/strong> as part of a new classical music strategy.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2023\/03\/p0269dvw-d5b8158.jpg\" alt=\"BBC Singers\" class=\"wp-image-181164\" title=\"BBC Singers\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The BBC Singers have a busy 2024 Proms<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>That decision has since been suspended, and this year the BBC Singers are able to celebrate their 100th birthday in style, with have a very busy Proms including both the First Night and Last Night. They also get their own 100th birthday concert at the Bristyol Beacon on Sunday 25 August, performing\u00a0John <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/john-tavener\">Tavener<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>Song for Athene<\/em>,\u00a0<strong>John Pickard<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>Mass in Troubled Times<\/em>, and<em>\u00a0<\/em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/benjamin-britten-composer\">Britten<\/a><\/strong><em>&#8216;s\u00a0A Shepherd\u2019s Carol<\/em>. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2024-proms-performers-conductors\"><strong>2024 Proms performers: conductors<\/strong><\/h3><p>Which conductors are performing at the 2024 BBC Proms? They include:<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sir-simon-rattle\"><strong>Sir Simon Rattle<\/strong><\/h4><p>Perhaps the most famous living British conductor, Rattle had a long and fruitful tenure with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra from 1980 to 1998. He was then principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic from 1999 to 2018. His most recent post was as music director of the London Symphony Orchestra: he makes his final performances with the LSO at this year&#8217;s Proms.<\/p><p>He&#8217;s made acclaimed recordings of the symphonies of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/jean-sibelius\/\"><strong>Sibelius<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/gustav-mahler\/\"><strong>Mahler<\/strong><\/a> (in Birmingham) and Beethoven and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/johannes-brahms\/\"><strong>Brahms<\/strong><\/a> (in Berlin). We named one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/20-greatest-conductors-all-time\/\"><strong>20 greatest conductors of all time<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a class=\"standard-card-new__article-title\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/which-is-the-best-mahler-symphony\/\">Which is the best Mahler symphony?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>This year, Rattle leads the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in two concerts, Proms 61 and 62, featuring, respectively, Thomas Ad\u00e8s and Bruckner, and Mahler&#8217;s Symphony No. 6.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2861\" height=\"1926\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2021\/01\/GettyImages-1017224570-e8fee96.jpg\" alt=\"BBC Proms announce 2023 concert lineup - Simon Rattle\" class=\"wp-image-137382\" title=\"BBC Proms announce 2023 concert lineup - Simon RattleEdinburgh International Festival 2018. Joining them are mezzo-soprano <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-jamie-barton\">Jamie Barton<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-daniel-barenboim\"><strong>Daniel Barenboim<\/strong><\/h4><p>The first person to hold both Palestinian and Israeli citizenship simultaneously, the great pianist and conductor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-is-daniel-barenboim\">Daniel Barenboim<\/a><\/strong> has stepped back somewhat from pubic performances of late, but the lure of the Proms has brought him to London for a concert on Sunday 11 August. On Sunday 4 August (Prom 20), the brothers are joined by Pl\u00ednio Fernandes (guitar), and the Fantasia Orchestra for a programme of chamber arrangements of songs and dances including &#8216;I Say a Little Prayer&#8217;,\u00a0&#8216;Redemption Song&#8217;,\u00a0 and &#8216;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/scarborough-fair-lyrics\">Scarborough Fair<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;.
