A former child prodigy, she was supported early in her career by legendary <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/what-does-a-conductor-do\">conductor<\/a><\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/karajan-conducting-five-fantastic-karajan-moments\">Herbert von Karajan<\/a><\/strong> and gained prominence in the 1970s and 80s. She has recorded over 50 albums, mostly for Deutsche Grammophon, and performed as a soloist with the world\u2019s leading orchestras. The first was Erna Honigberger, a former Carl Flesch student, who took the six-year-old Mutter to her first concert \u2013 featuring renowned violinist David Oistrakh.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Honigberger died when Mutter was just nine, and she subsequently studied with Aida Stucki, also a former student of Flesch, who she credits with encouraging her students to become distinctive performers: \u2018She was a total genius. Looking back, I realise how personalised her choice of repertoire was at each stage of the development of her students.\u2019<\/p><p>Mutter was also supported early in her career by conductor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/trouble-karajan\">Herbert von Karajan<\/a><\/strong> and made her orchestral debut with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/berlin-philharmonics-past-chief-conductors\">Berlin Philharmonic<\/a><\/strong> in 1977, aged just 13. \u2018He was able to bring the best out in all of us,\u2019 she said. \u2018It was a mixture of the huge respect we all had for him and maybe a tad of fear that you would not be good enough \u2013 or maybe a lot of fear! He had the way of listening to all of us, and particularly the soloist, and to carry you through the concert. She has had works composed especially for her by Thomas Ad\u00e8s, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/unsuk-chin\">Unsuk Chin<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/henri-dutilleux-2\">Henri Dutilleux<\/a><\/strong>, Sofia Gubaidulina, Witold Lutos\u0142awski, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/obituary-krzysztof-penderecki\">Krzysztof Penderecki<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/andr-previn-1929-2019\">Andr\u00e9 Previn<\/a><\/strong>, Wolfgang Rihm, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/jorg-widmann\">J\u00f6rg Widmann<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/williams-john\">John Williams<\/a><\/strong>.
