Set in 1953 in the run-up to Queen Elizabeth II&#8217;s coronation, we see Britten writing a new opera, <em>Gloriana<\/em>, about the new Queen&#8217;s predecessor, Elizabeth I. While Britten is battling with the tight nine-month deadline, he meets Imogen Holst, a dynamic and passionate composer and musician who supports Britten \u2013 both on this project and in the years beyond.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ben and Imo | Trailer\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G3FnRHyQ-wo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p><em>Ben and Imo<\/em> was originally written by playwright Mark Ravenhill for radio broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in 2013 to mark the centenary of Britten&#8217;s birth, but has since been reworked for its stage debut. It is a two-hander, starring Samuel Barnett as Britten and Victoria Yeates as Holst. <\/p><p><strong>Imogen <\/strong>(12 April 1907-9 March 1984) was a British composer, arranger, conductor, teacher, musicologist, and festival administrator. She is perhaps best remembered for her teaching work at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dartington_Hall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dartington Hall<\/a>\u00a0in the 1940s: she also served as joint artistic director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aldeburgh_Festival\">Aldeburgh <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aldeburgh_Festival\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Festival<\/a>, founded by Britten and his lifelong partner <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/peter-pears\">Peter Pears<\/a><\/strong>. As well as composing, Holst wrote biographies of several composers, and various books on her father&#8217;s life and works.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/benjamin-britten-and-peter-pears\">&#8216;An apparently perfect gay marriage before the concept was invented&#8217;: the richly fruitful partnership of Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>&#8216;One artist has been celebrated and commemorated, one whose life and work have been largely forgotten,&#8217; says Ravenhill. &#8216;During the pandemic, I returned to my research and rebuilt the <em>Ben and Imo <\/em>material from the ground up to make a new play for the theatre. I found these two complex and passionate characters \u2013\u00a0and their commitment to their art \u2013 to be a great solace during my lockdown isolation.
