Read on for an introduction to Sir Antonio Pappano, the English-Italian conductor who conducted the specially formed Coronation Orchestra<\/a><\/strong> when they performed at the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla<\/a><\/strong> on Saturday, 6 May 2023. He’s also a regular at the BBC Proms, and returns to the 2024 Proms to conduct the War Requiem by Benjamin Britten<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>

Who is Antonio Pappano?<\/h2>
Sir Antonio Pappano is one of today’s most famous conductors. He is the music director at the Royal Opera House and in September 2024 will be replacing Simon Rattle<\/a><\/strong> as Chief Conductor of London Symphony Orchestra.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>
<\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-old-is-antonio-pappano\">How old is Antonio Pappano?<\/h2><p>Antonio Pappano was born on 30 December 1959 in Epping, Essex. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-was-his-family-musical\">Was his family musical?<\/h2><p>Yes: Antonio’s father was musical. He worked in the restaurant business in the UK, but was a singing teacher by vocation. This ambition would later become a reality when the family moved across the the Atlantic. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-did-he-grow-up\">Where did he grow up?<\/h2><p>Pappano was born in Epping, Essex. His family had relocated to England from Castelfranco in Italy the year before his birth. The family moved to Connecticut when he was 13 years old so his dad could work as a full-time music teacher. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-did-he-study-music\">Where did he study music?<\/h2><p>Antonio Pappano didn’t attend music school. Instead, he helped support his father in his business. He did, however, study music under various teachers including the piano teacher Norma Verrilli.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/five-music-teachers-who-changed-the-face-of-western-classical-music\">Five music teachers who changed the face of classical music<\/a><\/strong> <\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-did-antonio-pappano-become-a-conductor\">How did Antonio Pappano become a conductor?<\/h2><p>It was working as a pianist that led him to becoming a conductor. They were clearly impressed with the young conductor, as he became their music director in 1990 aged just 30. And he has done alright since!<\/p><p>Pappano went onto work with some of the biggest names in classical music, including the Vienna State Opera before becoming music director at the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roh.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Royal Opera House<\/a><\/strong> in 2002. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-antonio-pappano-most-famous-for\">What is Antonio Pappano most famous for?<\/h2><p>He is most famous as an opera conductor and as well as live performances has produced over 70 albums, with the majority devoted to opera. Some of his best known recordings have featured the operas of his Italian contemporaries <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/gioachino-rossini\">Rossini<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/giacomo-puccini\">Puccini<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/giuseppe-verdi\">Verdi<\/a><\/strong>, as well as <em>Tristan und Isolde<\/em> by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/richard-wagner\">Wagner<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/best-italian-composers-of-all-time\">The greatest Italian composers of all time<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Pappano is not limited to opera by any means, though.
