Hungary national anthem: lyrics<\/h2>
There are several verses, but you will normally hear just the first verse at ceremonial occasions. It goes:<\/p>

<\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hungary-national-anthem-translation\">Hungary national anthem: translation<\/h2><p>The lyrics in English are as follows:<\/p><p>O God, bless the nation of Hungary<br\/>With your grace and bounty<br\/>Extend over it your guarding arm<br\/>During strife with its enemies<br\/>Long torn by ill fate<br\/>Bring upon it a time of relief<br\/>This nation has suffered for all sins<br\/>Of the past and of the future!<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-wrote-the-hungarian-national-anthem\">Who wrote the Hungarian national anthem?<\/h2><p>The poem that forms the Hungarian national anthem was written by the poet, critic and politician Ferenc K\u00f6lcsey\u00a0in 1823. Then, in 1844, there was a competition for composers to set K\u00f6lcsey’s words to music. <\/p><p>The winning melody was by the composer, conductor and pianist\u00a0Ferenc Erkel, and this version got its first performance in Hungary’s National Theatre (where Erkel served as conductor) in July 1844.
