What does ‘Nad Tatrou sa bl\u00fdska’ mean?<\/h2>
‘Nad Tatrou sa bl\u00fdska’ means ‘Lightning over the Tatras’. The anthem narrates a storm over the\u00a0Tatra<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0mountains, the impressive mountain range that crosses the country. This storm represents, in the song, a danger to the Slovak people, and the lyrics hope for a happy resolution.<\/p>
The origins of the anthem are in\u00a0Central European\u00a0activism\u00a0of the 19th century. Later, it became one of the two national anthems of\u00a0Czechoslovakia<\/strong><\/a>, along with the Czech national anthem. Then, when in 1993\u00a0Czechoslovakia\u00a0split into the\u00a0Czech Republic\u00a0and the\u00a0Slovak Republic, the second stanza was added to the first. The resulting work became the national anthem of the new Slovakian nation. <\/p>

The tune comes from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/best-folk-songs-15-most-famous-folk-songs\">folk song<\/a><\/strong> ‘Kopala studienku’ (‘English: “‘She was digging a well’), as well as a similar Hungarian folk song, ‘Azt mondj\u00e1k, nem adnak engem galambomnak’ (‘They say, they won’t let me marry my love’). <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-folk-music\">What is folk music?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/best-american-folk-songs\">Best American folk songs<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>Soon after writing the verses, Mat\u00fa\u0161ka and other students left their Lutheran college in Pressburg (modern-day Bratislava) to protest over the removal of a teacher (the Slovakian region was under Austro-Hungarian control, and officials had not been happy about the teacher’s overt Slovak nationalism).<\/p>Some of the students defected to the Lutheran gymnasium of Levo\u010da. Their journey from Pressburg to Levo\u010da took the students past the High Tatras.
