Here’s a guide to the national anthem of Austria: we’ll look at its lyrics and then at its history. It used to have a different anthem, before a famous neighbour decided to take that. We’ll also reveal how it’s been wrongly attributed to a famous composer.<\/p>

What is the national anthem of Austria?<\/h2>
The\u00a0national anthem of\u00a0Austria is also known by its first line, ‘Land der Berge, Land am Strome’ (‘Land of peaks, land by the river’). It became the official anthem in 1946 – previous to that, Austria had a different national anthem. More on that in a minute. <\/p>

However, this is now seen as doubtful. So who did compose it? The melody’s most likely composer is the Austrian composer\u00a0Johann Holzer.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/best-austrian-composers\">The greatest Austrian composers of all time<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-wrote-the-words-to-the-austria-national-anthem\">Who wrote the words to the Austria national anthem?<\/h2><p>The Austrian writer and poet <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paula_von_Preradovi%C4%87\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paula von Preradovi\u0107<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0composed the lyrics for the anthem in 1947, the year after its official adoption. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-happened-to-austria-s-previous-national-anthem\">What happened to Austria’s previous national anthem?<\/h2><p>Before the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anschluss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Anschluss<\/strong><\/a> (the annexation of Austria into the German Reich in 1938), the state anthem of Austria was ‘Sei gesegnet ohne Ende’. This was set to the tune of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/joseph-haydn\"><strong>Haydn<\/strong><\/a>‘s ‘Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser”, the slow movement of his ‘Emperor’ <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-string-quartet\">string quartet<\/a><\/strong>. This had been imperial Austria’s state anthem since 1797. <\/p><p>However, with the annexation, the Haydn melody was co-opted for the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/german-national-anthem-lyrics\">Germany national anthem<\/a><\/strong>, the ‘Deutschandlied’, albeit with different words.
