Who is Dalia Stasevska?<\/h2>
Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska became a household name when she led the BBC Symphony Orchestra (BBC SO) at the Last Night of the Proms<\/a><\/strong> in 2020, an extraordinary year to take the reins of a leading orchestra. Faced with an empty concert hall, no audience and just a few cameras broadcasting live across the world, Stasevska led the orchestra in the biggest event in the UK’s classical music calendar. She had made her Proms debut the year before in her first public performance with the orchestra in this position.<\/p>
That’s not the only big Proms gig Dalia has led. In 2023 she led the BBC SO for the First Night of the Proms<\/a><\/strong>, in a programme including Edvard Grieg<\/a><\/strong>‘s Piano Concerto and Benjamin Britten<\/a><\/strong>‘s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. <\/p>
Which orchestras has she conducted?<\/h2>
In 2019, Dalia Stasevska became the youngest person \u2013 and first woman \u2013 to be given a titled conducting position at the BBC Symphony Orchestra<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>
In May 2020, she was announced as the new chief conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra<\/strong><\/a> in her native Finland.<\/p>
She has previously conducted the Philharmonia, Orchestra of the Opera North, Los Angeles Philharmonic (one of the world’s best orchestras<\/a><\/strong>), Oslo Philharmonic and Gothenburg Symphony.<\/p>
<\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-she-conducting-at-the-2024-bbc-proms\">What’s she conducting at the 2024 BBC Proms?<\/h2><p>Dalia and the BBC Symphony Orchestra look in for Prom 45 (Sat 24 August), which features a UK premiere of the Symphony No. 2 by American composer Julius <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/eastman-julius\">Eastman<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and Sibelius’s joyous, uplifting Symphony No. 5. He is the bassist for Finnish power metal band Stratovarius – and is also the great-grandson of composer Jean <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/jean-sibelius\">Sibelius<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0Stasevska and Porra had their first child in 2023.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-old-is-dalia-stasevska\">How old is Dalia Stasevska?<\/h2><p>She was born on 30 December 1984.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-is-dalia-stasevska-from\">Where is Dalia Stasevska from?<\/h2><p>Dalia Stasevska was born in Kyiv, Ukraine.<\/p><p>Stasevska\u2019s childhood spanned three countries. She never really knew Ukraine, and has only visited her country of birth five or six times in her life. Shortly after she was born, her family \u2013 who excelled in the visual arts and sciences rather than music \u2013 emigrated first to Tallinn in Estonia, then (when she was five) to Helsinki and finally Tampere in southwest Finland. \u2018My father remarried, to a Finnish woman, so Finland is basically my home country,\u2019 she reflects.<\/p><p>If they were thinking of the young Dalia as a future international conducting superstar \u2013 which they were certainly not \u2013 the family could not have chosen a better country in which to raise her. By the time she started studying the violin at school, Finland was already producing a stream of superbly characterful conductors, singers, instrumentalists and composers whose impact on the musical world was far out of proportion to the size of Finland\u2019s 5.5 million population. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-and-where-did-she-study\">And where did she study?<\/h2><p>Stasevska studied at the Royal Swedish Academy with Jormu Panula and at the Sibelius Academy with Leif Segerstam, and later went on to work assistant conductor to Esa-Pekka Salonen and Paavo J\u00e4rvi.<\/p><p>She was studying violin at the renowned Sibelius Academy in Helsinki when she was suddenly struck by the desire to become a conductor. \u2018I was a second-year student when, for the first time, I saw a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/best-female-conductors\/\"><strong>female conductor<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 someone who actually looked like me. \u201cWait a minute!\u201d I thought. \u201cMaybe I can do that too.\u201d\u2019<\/p><p>She was in the right place to try. The Sibelius Academy has a unique conducting course devised by the legendary Jorma Panula. Just turned 90, he is the teacher who trained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/five-of-the-best-works-by-esa-pekka-salonen\/\"><strong>Esa-Pekka Salonen<\/strong><\/a>, Osmo V\u00e4nsk\u00e4, Sakari Oramo, just about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/four-of-the-best-finnish-conductors\"><strong>every other distinguished Finnish conductor<\/strong><\/a>. \u2018He created this fantastic system by saying, quite simply, that to train as a conductor you need an orchestra,\u2019 Stasevska says. \u2018So every Friday and Saturday the conducting students have three hours in front of an orchestra of their fellow students. It\u2019s a genius idea because you educate conductors and future orchestral musicians at the same time, and each generation develops hand in hand.\u2019<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nordic Masterclass for Conductors with Jorma Panula 2012\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mnh6IAhZSNw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-are-finland-s-other-famous-conductors\">Who are Finland’s other famous conductors?<\/h2><p>For a relatively small country, Finland has been astonishingly polific in turning out top-tier conductors, and Dalia Stasevska is very far from being her country’s lone representative in this field. The established current generation includes conductors John Storg\u00e5rds, Susanna M\u00e4lkki, and Sakari Oramo. who’s currently chief conductor at the BBC Symphony Orchestra and, as such, a familair face at the BBC Proms. Also on the list of distinguished current Finns are Osmo V\u00e4nsk\u00e4, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Anna-Maria Helsing (current chief conductor at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/bbc-concert-orchestra\">BBC Concert Orchestra<\/a><\/strong>), Pietari Inkinen, Hannu Lintu, and Juka-Pekka Saraste.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/best-finnish-conductors\">Five of the best Finnish conductors<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Illustrious conductors from previous generations include Paavo Berglund, who served for many years as chief conductor at the Bournemouth Symphony orchestra and conducted no fewer than three acclaimed cycles of the Sibelius symphonies. Also of note were Robert Kajanus (who knew Sibelius and championed his work) and Okko Kamu.<\/p><p>Other breakthrough Finnish conductors of Dalia Stasevska’s generation include <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/who-is-klaus-makela-a-guide-to-the-finnish-conductor\">Klaus M\u00e4kel\u00e4<\/a><\/strong>, chief conductor of the\u00a0Oslo Philharmonic and music director of the\u00a0Orchestre de Paris. He’s joined by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/philharmonia-orchestra-names-santtu-matias-rouvali-new-principal-conductor\">Santtu-Matias Rouvali<\/a><\/strong> (currently principal conductor at the Philharmonia) and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/rotterdam-philharmonic-names-tarmo-peltokoski-as-its-next-guest-conductor\">Tarmo Peltokoski<\/a><\/strong>, who’s recently taken on the chief conductor role at the Rotterdam Philharmonic. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-is-finland-so-strong-at-classical-music\">Why is Finland so strong at classical music?<\/h2><p>\u2018I think three things account for that,\u2019 Stasevska says. \u2018First, as a young country [Finland gained its independence only in 1917], I think people realised that they needed to put extra effort into nurturing the country\u2019s culture. It was about making a national identity too. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dalia Stasevska on the moment she decided to become a conductor\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gbMSFvX3mB0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>‘Second, our education system puts music at the heart of the curriculum from elementary school onwards. And third, equality has always been an important thing in Finland, which meant equal musical possibilities, free of charge, for everyone. <\/p><p>‘For me, that was so important. We weren\u2019t a wealthy family. Had we moved to, say, the United States my family would never have had the money to put a violin in my hands and pay for lessons, let alone send me to a conservatory.\u2019<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dalia-stasevska-albums\">Dalia Stasevska albums<\/h2><p>Stasevska has already recorded some fine albums.
