The discovery by a group of scientists has led them to believe that humans may have played music much earlier than previously thought.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/\">Browse our dozens of articles on musical instruments<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-could-this-be-the-world-s-oldest-instrument\">Could this be the world&#8217;s oldest instrument?<\/h2><p>Fragments of three flutes were found in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hohle_Fels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hohle Fels<\/a><\/strong> cavern in southwest Germany by a team from T\u00fcbingen University. The near-complete vulture bone flute is 20cm long, has five finger holes and v-shaped notches that would have acted as a mouthpiece. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hohle Fels Cave flute - Music History Crash Course\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dqjxtstlHA0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>Scientists think the instrument would have been held like a recorder. Conversely, though, the player would have blown across it like a flute. The other two flutes dug up by the archaeologists are made from ivory, thought to be from mammoth tusks.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-did-humans-first-make-music\">When did humans first make music?<\/h2><p>Finding these fragments of what appears to be the world&#8217;s oldest instrument suggests that music was an important part of day-to-day life for early modern humans some 35,000 years ago. And playing music may have helped maintain beneficial social networks.
