It was one of<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/edward-elgar\/\">Elgar<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s later works, composed in 1919, after having agreed many years before that he would write such a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/what-concerto\/\">concerto<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/jacqueline-du-pre\/\"><strong>Jacqueline du Pr\u00e9\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> elegiac rendition of this movement remains the most notable recording of the work to date. Recorded in 1965, du Pr\u00e9\u2019s interpretation was so popular that her teacher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/mstislav-rostropovich\">Mstislav Rostropovich<\/a><\/strong> removed the work from his own repertoire. He&#8217;d done very well though, as these three are all gripping, beautiful works, the cello sonata perhaps most of all.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a class=\"standard-card-new__article-title\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/best-french-composers-ever\/\">25 greatest French composers of all time<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>The opening movement is dramatic, urgent in places, and has the cello at times prowling restlessly around its lower register, before bursting into a moment of release higher up.<\/p><p>The middle movement (S\u00e9r\u00e9nade) has some thrilling Spanish sonorities \u2013 as the cello is plucked and teased we find ourselves sheltering from the midday sun in some sultry Andalusian square. The Finale, meanwhile, is all nervous energy, with that tumbling then rising <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-melody\/\">melody<\/a><\/strong>, by turns wistful and joyous. If pushed, we&#8217;ll choose the first, with its fascinatingly changeable moods (haunting, romantic, strident) and its rich cello sonorities. After that, as we should exoect from one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/20-greatest-pianists-all-time\/\"><strong>greatest pianists of all time<\/strong><\/a>, the piano dominates somewhat &#8211; apart from in the mournful <em>Andante<\/em>, one of Rachmaninov&#8217;s crowning achievements. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rachmaninov-cello-sonata-recommended-recording\"><strong>Rachmaninov Cello Sonata: Recommended recording<\/strong><\/h3><p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/reviews\/chamber\/myaskovsky-rachmaninov-cello-sonatas\/\"><strong>our review<\/strong><\/a>: &#8216;[Cellist Bruno] Philippe steadfastly resists the temptation to indulge in too much tempo fluctuation even at moments of greatest intensity.
