Willed on by the percussive <em>accelerando<\/em>, the duo zips through <em>Zorba\u2019s Dance<\/em>, a piece by Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis that evokes ouzo-soaked taverns and hot summer nights. The dark-haired pianists, virtually identical in sunglasses and denim shorts, finish their own arrangement of Greece\u2019s popular musical export with a flourish. <\/p><p>As the sun makes a lengthy retreat behind the tree-lined stage, musicians invite young audience members to try out some instruments. A child delights at blowing a clarinet mouthpiece, another tentatively presses piano keys. These guests have come from one of the refugee camps that remain on Lesbos, the Turkey-adjacent island that unwittingly became the centre of the 2015 migrant crisis. \u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-sisters-who-co-created-a-musical-festival-in-sun-soaked-greece\">The sisters who co-created a musical festival in sun-soaked Greece<\/h2><p>A short while later, the stage lights \u2013 and mosquito repellent \u2013 are out in full force. The pianists, Greek-German sisters Danae and Kiveli D\u00f6rken, are back. Alternating between Greek and English, the D\u00f6rkens welcome visitors to the Molyvos International Music Festival (MIMF), the event they established \u2013 along with their Lesbos-born mother Lito Dakou \u2013 in 2014. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Danae D\u00f6rken &amp; Kiveli D\u00f6rken - M. Having played piano duets since Kiveli joined big sister Danae at the keyboard (the Theodorakis piece features on their latest album, <em>Apollo &amp; Dionysus<\/em>, alongside works by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/felix-mendelssohn\">Mendelssohn<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/johannes-brahms\">Brahms<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/philip-glass\"><strong>Philip Glass<\/strong><\/a> among others), co-creating a festival seemed like a natural step. <\/p><p>\u2018Working together feels like our superpower,\u2019 says Kiveli. \u2018We can accomplish so much more.\u2019 Facing hurdles that have included the European financial crisis, huge numbers of displaced people, a pandemic and sprawling forest fires, two artistic heads proved better than one. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-kardashians-the-krays-and-of-course-the-wonsals\">The Kardashians, the Krays&#8230; and, of course, the Wonsals<\/h2><p>The sisters have reflected contemporary challenges in their programming, from 2016\u2019s \u2018Crossroads\u2019 theme to 2023\u2019s \u2018Symbiosis\u2019, and are preparing to curate a special tenth edition for 2024. \u2018It\u2019s been challenging, but together we can keep going,\u2019 says Danae. \u2018No-one knows us better than we do each other,\u2019 adds Kiveli.\u00a0<\/p><p>While working with a sibling might be an anathema to many (those <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/reporter\/2017number4\/new-evidence-impacts-birth-order\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">birth-order tropes<\/a><\/strong> can be hard to avoid), there are plenty who have made a success out of it. Polish \u00e9migr\u00e9s the Wonsals went on to establish a leading film studio, under the anglicised version of their name, Warner Bros, and the Kardashians have earned millions from a reality TV series that follows the relationships between the eponymous sisters. <\/p><p>Even in underground activities, it can pay to keep it in the family: the Kray twins are among the UK\u2019s most notorious historic criminals. So, it is unsurprising that when it comes to music, the pattern is repeated. It\u2019s common in rock and pop \u2013 from AC\/DC to the White Stripes \u2013 and, perhaps unsurprisingly, in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-chamber-music\">chamber music<\/a><\/strong>, an artform reliant on intimacy. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-i-found-the-musical-siblings-i-missed-as-a-child\">\u2018I found the musical siblings I missed as a child\u2019<\/h2><p>In <em>Two Violins, One Viola, A Cello and Me<\/em>, Sonia Simmenauer\u2019s recent memoir about managing string quartets, violist Krzysztof Chorzelski describes his time with the Belcea Quartet as a \u2018great stroke of luck\u2019. This was, he writes, because \u2018through music, I found the siblings I missed as a child\u2019.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PLANET CHAMBER MUSIC \u2013 Johannes Brahms: String Quartet No.1 in C minor Op.51 \/ Belcea Quartet\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nWLe7ed8my0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>Elder sisters have a distinctive influence over their younger family members during childhood. Shortly after I started playing the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/flute\">flute<\/a><\/strong>, my sister took up the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/history-of-the-clarinet-its-invention-evolution-and-famous-clarinet-makers\">clarinet<\/a><\/strong>, following me to various wind ensembles \u2013 and only years later admitting she hadn\u2019t enjoyed it all that much. Perhaps left to her own devices, she might have found her way to another, more suitable pastime.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-i-wanted-to-learn-the-piano-so-that-i-could-share-that-space-with-her\">\u2018I wanted to learn the piano so that I could share that space with her&#8217; <\/h2><p>\u2018I felt a desire to emulate Danae for many years,\u2019 says Kiveli. \u2018I wanted to learn the piano so that I could share that space with her. She never discouraged me.\u2019 Happily, like Danae, Kiveli demonstrated prodigious talent, although she says she always found practising to be a struggle. <\/p><p>\u2018Danae was more disciplined. The times when I enjoyed practising were when we played together.\u2019 Sometimes it was music for four hands, but often the sisters would just sit together at the stool. \u2018Having Danae next to me makes it easier to work,\u2019 says Kiveli. <\/p><p>The D\u00f6rkens follow in the footsteps of Katia and Marielle Lab\u00e8que, the French piano duo with a vast repertoire and discography, which includes 2014 album <em>Sisters<\/em>. Like the Lab\u00e8ques, the D\u00f6rkens live together with their partners and extended family.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/reviews\/instrumental\/philip-glass-les-enfants-terribles\">Review: the Lab\u00e8que sisters play Philip Glass<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mozart-and-nannerl-musical-siblings-out-on-tour\">Mozart and Nannerl: musical siblings out on tour<\/h2><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/mozart\">Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart<\/a><\/strong> admired his older sister Maria Anna, known as \u2018Nannerl\u2019, who seems to have been the impetus behind his early musical forays. The two children performed together as part of tours organised by their father (one of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/musical-prodigies\">classical music&#8217;s pushiest parents<\/a><\/strong>). Wolfgang also wrote several pieces for Nannerl to play, including the Prelude and Fugue in C, K394 and the four Preludes K284a. <\/p><p>The siblings drew apart in later years, perhaps due to Nannerl\u2019s enforced retirement from the stage in exchange for marriage, and the separation seems to have been exacerbated by Wolfgang\u2019s marriage to Constanze. But until 1785, Wolfgang sent Nannerl copies of his piano concertos, suggesting the musical bond wasn\u2019t so easily broken.\u00a0<\/p><p>One sibling relationship has the potential for complication when combined with work pressures. But what happens when multiple brothers and sisters are involved? <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-do-four-musical-siblings-do-form-a-string-quartet-of-course\">What do four musical siblings do? Form a string quartet, of course<\/h2><p>The Hagen Quartet, founded by siblings Lukas, Angelika, Veronika and Clemens Hagen, ticked along for several years after it was formed in the 1980s. The siblings conveniently played the right assortment of instruments for a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-string-quartet\">string quartet<\/a><\/strong>. Of course, this didn\u2019t happen by chance \u2013 their father was first violinist in the Salzburg Mozarteum and encouraged them to play together at home. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hagen Quartet - Maurice Ravel - String Quartet in F - Allegro moderato, Tr\u00e8s doux (1\/4)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ehQMe57TPPM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>The Hagen Quartet\u2019s biography artfully notes that \u2018in 1987, Angelika Hagen left the quartet\u2019. (To be replaced by Rainer Schmidt). As the copy also observes, these changes in lineup affect most ensembles \u2013 \u2018these internal modifications from which few quartets are spared\u2019. Sure, but the stakes are higher when you are related to your colleagues \u2013 the ongoing Barclay brothers\u2019 fallout being a case in point in the business world.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-mozart-gently-mocked-the-sibling-relationship\">When Mozart gently mocked the sibling relationship<\/h2><p>Sibling relationships can often seem strange to those who may not have direct or comparable experience of them. The closeness between two sisters is gently mocked in Mozart\u2019s operatic farce <em><strong>Cos\u00ec fan tutte<\/strong><\/em>, which sees Fiordiligi and Dorabella get into hot water trying (half-heartedly) to stay faithful to their fianc\u00e9s. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/six-best-mozart-operas\">Six of the best Mozart operas<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Angela Brower and Julia Kleiter as sisters Dorabella and Fiordiligi in a rehearsal of Mozart&#8217;s Cos\u00ec fan tutte, Felsenreitschule, Salzburg, Austria. This was definitely the case with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/johann-christian-bach-composer\">Johann Christoph Bach<\/a><\/strong>, who raised his younger sibling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/johann-sebastian-bach\"><strong>Johann Sebastian Bach<\/strong><\/a> when the latter was orphaned at ten years old. <\/p><p>The elder Bach was the organist at St Michael\u2019s Church in Ohrdruf and Johann Sebastian was given organ lessons, as well as learning the basics of organ construction when the instrument was overhauled. It seems this period was important in JS Bach\u2019s development: his Capriccio in E major is dedicated to Johann Christoph.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sibling-success-stories\">Sibling success stories<\/h2><p>Composer-lyricist team Ira and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/george-gershwin\">George Gershwin<\/a><\/strong> worked together for much of their careers, writing Broadway scores, popular songs and, with DuBose Heyward, their 1935 opera <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/porgy-and-bess-gershwins-opera\">Porgy and Bess<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. Some decades later, another set of brothers arrived in Hollywood: Robert and Richard Sherman became staff songwriters for Walt Disney Studios, producing hit soundtracks including <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/tv-and-film-music\/best-film-musicals-of-all-time\">Mary Poppins<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (1964) and <em>Bedknobs and Broomsticks<\/em> (1971). <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1859\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2024\/07\/GettyImages-115093127-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Brothers George (left) and Ira Gershwin take a break from playing table tennis, circa 1925\" class=\"wp-image-207742\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Brothers George (left) and Ira Gershwin take a break from playing table tennis, circa 1925. (Photo by Hackett\/Archive Photos\/Getty Images) &#8211; Hackett\/Archive Photos\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>While not regular collaborators, Julian and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/who-is-andrew-lloyd-webber\">Andrew Lloyd Webber<\/a><\/strong> have sometimes combined forces, notably in 1978 with <em>Variations<\/em>, Andrew\u2019s piece based on the theme from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/niccolo-paganini\">Paganini<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s 24th Caprice, performed by his cellist brother. Julian also recorded <em>Lloyd Webber Plays Lloyd Webber,<\/em> a 1989 album of arrangements of Andrew\u2019s musical theatre.\u00a0<\/p><p>Musically, brotherhood has been contemplated in the abstract in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/arvo-part-composer\">Arvo P\u00e4rt<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Fratres<\/em>, and more literally in <em>The Brothers<\/em>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/george-antheil\">George Antheil<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s chamber opera about Biblical siblings Cain and Abel. And JFK\u2019s role as an absent brother was considered in Irish National Opera\u2019s <em>Least Like The Other<\/em> (2022). The work explores the life of Rosemary Kennedy, the president\u2019s sister, who was hidden away in an institution after a botched lobotomy.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-some-academics-speculate-there-was-romance-between-brother-and-sister\">&#8216;Some academics speculate there was romance between brother and sister&#8217;<\/h2><p>Probably the most famous brother-sister twosome, however, are the Mendelssohns. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/felix-mendelssohn\">Felix<\/a><\/strong> adored his big sister <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/fanny-mendelssohn\">Fanny<\/a><\/strong> and the two developed their prodigious musicality in proximity. In adulthood, as Fanny\u2019s creative life was hampered by the societal expectations of the time, the siblings\u2019 lives remained intertwined; Felix composed large-scale orchestral works, Fanny, with Felix\u2019s encouragement, wrote keyboard pieces and chamber music, and held regular salons. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/six-best-works-fanny-mendelssohn\">Six of the best works by Fanny Mendelssohn<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"2131\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2024\/07\/GettyImages-517215980-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"1888 - Picture shows composer Felix Mendelssohn with his sister Fanny at the piano. The intensity of their relationship, witnessed in correspondence, has even caused some academics to speculate there was romance between brother and sister. In <em>Rethinking Mendelssohn<\/em>, a collection of essays edited by Benedict Taylor, Angela Mace Christian introduces the concept of \u2018siberoticism\u2019, inspired by a letter in which Fanny tells Felix that he exerts a \u2018daemonic\u2019 influence over her.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-seven-musical-siblings-who-wowed-simon-cowell\">The seven musical siblings who wowed Simon Cowell<\/h2><p>At the other end of the scale, the spectacle of large families performing together has long delighted audiences. It draws inevitable comparisons with the Von Trapp Family, a real-life Austrian singing group who inspired <em>The Sound of Music<\/em>. When the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-are-the-members-of-the-kanneh-mason-family\">Kanneh-Mason siblings<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 seven brothers and sisters, all of whom play either violin, piano or cello \u2013 appeared on <em>Britain\u2019s Got Talent<\/em> in 2015, Simon Cowell\u2019s pronouncement was: \u2018The fact you\u2019re a family makes this really special.\u2019 <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Musicians The Kanneh-Masons are keeping it in the family | Britain's Got Talent 2015\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BQ8rLm17-28?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>The key to success is maintaining separate careers as well as playing together: Kanneh-Mason projects range from an exquisite whole-family recording of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/camille-saint-saens\">Saint-Sa\u00ebns<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/carnival-of-the-animals-saint-saens\"><strong>Carnival of the Animals<\/strong><\/a><\/em> via the Kanneh-Mason Trio (pianist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-is-isata-kanneh-mason\">Isata<\/a><\/strong>, violinist Braimah and cellist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/sheku-kanneh-mason\">Sheku<\/a><\/strong>) to solo performances.\u00a0<\/p><p>No-one has better experience of this balancing act than the Bevan family, multiple generations who seem to have isolated the gene for excellent singing voices. The Bevan Family Choir, active in the 1970s, was reformed in 2013 by some of the younger Bevans \u2013 including sopranos <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/sophie-bevan-soprano\">Sophie<\/a><\/strong> and Mary, who were awarded MBEs in the Queen\u2019s Birthday Honours list in 2019. <\/p><p>The Bevan Family Consort (BFC) released its debut recording on Signum last year, including a Magnificat by Dominic Bevan. Their Facebook page profiles each member with characteristic wit: Hugh, for example, is described as \u2018the first-born son of Rachel Bevan and John Carter. He selfishly used up most of the good-looking genes in the family so none of the rest of us got a look in. <\/p><p>&#8216;We all hate him but we don\u2019t have enough basses in the family, so we need him for the BFC.\u2019 The suggestion is that, ultimately, what musical siblings really need to thrive is a GSOH. \u00a0<\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Published: Monday, 08 July 2024 at 11:22 AM The audience begins to clap, gradually gathering speed in time with the pianists on stage.
