A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/musical-prodigies\">child prodigy<\/a><\/strong>, he played for John F Kennedy when he was just seven years old, and studied at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/the-juilliard-school-history-and-famous-alumni\">Juilliard School<\/a><\/strong> and Harvard University.\u00a0<\/p><p>A world-renowned performer, he has made more than 90 recordings, encompassing Western classical music, American bluegrass, traditional Chinese melodies, Argentine tango and Brazilian music. He has also won 19 Grammy Awards. In 1998, he founded the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silkroad.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Silk Road<\/a><\/strong> Project to promote collaboration between musicians from all over the world.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/yo-yo-ma-awarded-1-million-birgit-nilsson-prize\">Yo-Yo Ma awarded $1 million Birgit Nilsson Prize<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Ma is particularly associated with the music of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/johann-sebastian-bach\">JS Bach<\/a><\/strong>. But he has also appeared on film soundtracks, such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/who-is-tan-dun\">Tan Dun<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon<\/em>\u00a0and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/williams-john\">John Williams<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Seven Years In Tibet<\/em>.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/four-best-john-williams-recordings\">Four of the best John Williams recordings<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>He was appointed a United Nations peace ambassador in 2006, and appeared at the inauguration of US president Barack Obama in 2009. He has played for eight presidents throughout his career.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-and-where-was-yo-yo-ma-born\">When and where was Yo-Yo Ma born?<\/h2><p>Yo-Yo Ma was born in Paris in 1955 to Chinese parents. His mother was a singer and his father was a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/20-greatest-violinists-ever\">violinist<\/a><\/strong>, composer and professor of music. Ma\u2019s parent\u2019s migrated from the Republic of China to France during the Chinese Civil War. The family moved to New York in the US when Ma was seven.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-did-he-first-learn-to-play-the-cello\">When did he first learn to play the cello?<\/h2><p>Yo-Yo Ma began the playing the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/whats-a-cello\">cello<\/a><\/strong> at four years old. By that time, he already had a successful career as a concert soloist.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-yo-yo-ma-most-famous-for\">What is Yo-Yo Ma most famous for?<\/h2><p>Ma has a particular association with Bach\u2019s Solo Cello Suites, which he has recorded three times. In 2018 he launched &#8216;The Bach Project&#8217;, a two-year tour that involved playing JS Bach\u2019s Six Suites in 36 famous locations around the world.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/bach-beginners-recordings-help-you-discover-bach\">Bach for beginners: the recordings to help you discover Bach<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>\u2018I have been playing the Suites for Solo Cello by JS Bach for 55 years,\u2019 he told <em>BBC Music Magazine<\/em> in 2015. \u2018I recall the first time I sat down to the Prelude from Suite No. 1, aged four, learning two bars a day, day by day, taking it all in. The project was\u00a0named after the route across Asia, which for more than 2,000\u00a0years was used for trade between Europe and China. Through this, Ma has embraced musical traditions from the Arab world to Africa, from central Asia to China and India.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/yo-yo-ma-and-music-strangers\">Silk Road Ensemble documentary: Yo-Yo Ma and The Music of Strangers<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>\u2018Silkroad was one of these moments in which I followed my curiosity, sought answers to questions that had been with me since I was very young,\u2019 he told us in 2020. \u2018My family\u2019s experiences of immigration \u2013 my parents emigrating from China to France, and our journey from Paris to New York \u2013 taught me that our shared humanity is a much stronger force than boundaries of culture or nation or discipline. I\u2019m more human for having been part of Silkroad.\u2019<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-yo-yo-ma-s-best-recordings\">What are Yo-Yo Ma&#8217;s best recordings?<\/h2><p>Yo-Yo Ma has released more than 90 recordings \u2013 his first release was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/gerald-finzi\">Finzi<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Cello Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Vernon Handley in 1979. In October 2018, Yo-Yo Ma spoke to <em>BBC Music Magazine<\/em> about his favourite recording\u2026<\/p><p><em>Shostakovich<br\/>Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor<br\/>Isaac Stern (violin), Yo-Yo Ma (cello), Emanuel Ax (piano)<br\/>Sony MK44664 (1988)<\/em><\/p><p>&#8216;Isaac Stern introduced me to Leonard Rose when I was nine years old, and he became my main cello teacher. I grew up listening to them and to the Stern Rose Istomin Trio. I knew Isaac as this really scary figure, when I was growing up; he had glasses on the top of his head and he\u2019d stare at you \u2013 I would cower or run away! Of course, later on I knew him and he wanted to play chamber music with me.\u00a0<\/p><p>&#8216;Occasionally Isaac and I would play trios, with Emanuel Ax, and it was one concert that we played in Osaka, Japan, that I remember. It featured <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/dmitri-shostakovich\">Shostakovich<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Piano Trio. No. 2, which we did a recording of. The last movement of that trio is based on Jewish folk themes, and it builds and builds and builds, like the whole world is on fire.
