{"id":44954,"date":"2024-07-09T15:03:42","date_gmt":"2024-07-09T13:03:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ba536d47-e638-40cc-a80b-e1e17f54ed98"},"modified":"2024-07-09T15:37:19","modified_gmt":"2024-07-09T13:37:19","slug":"songs-for-peter-pears","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcmusicmagazine\/rss_feed\/songs-for-peter-pears\/","title":{"rendered":"Songs for Peter Pears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 09 July 2024 at 13:03 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>These Pears-shaped pieces are just ripe for revival, says\u00a0Ashutosh Khandekar&#8217;s review of Robin Tritschler and co\u2019s Peter Pears songs tribute<\/p><p><strong>Songs for Peter Pears<\/strong><br\/>Works by L Berkeley, Britten,\u00a0RR Bennett, Bush and Oldham<br\/>Robin Tritschler (tenor), Malcolm Martineau (piano) et al<br\/><em>Signum Classics SIGCD774\u00a0\u00a0\u00a073:25 mins\u00a0<\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2024\/07\/REVIEWS-CHORAL-SONG-CHOICE-L-Berkeley-Songs-of-the-Half-Light-Op.-65-The-Fleeting.mp3\"\/><\/figure><h6 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-clip-lennox-berkeley-songs-of-the-half-light-op-65-the-fleeting\">Clip: <em>Lennox Berkeley \u2013 Songs of the Half-Light, Op. 65, The Fleeting<\/em><\/h6><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/peter-pears\">Peter Pears<\/a> established a particular English tenor sound in the \u201940s that influenced generations of singers to come \u2013 at once masculine and confident, while prone to shadowy, neurotic undercurrents.<\/p><p>Robin Tritschler has none of Pears\u2019s uptight characteristics and never sounds like a parody. <\/p><p>He delivers Lennox Berkeley\u2019s expressionistic settings of AE Housman poems with luminous tone and unflinching emotional directness, full of the resignation and bitterness of unrequited love. <\/p><p>Malcolm Martineau\u2019s radiant piano playing underscores the heartache.<\/p><p>Berkeley\u2019s\u00a0<em>Songs of the Half-Light<\/em>\u00a0was commissioned by Pears to be performed with guitarist Julian Bream at the 1965 Aldeburgh Festival. <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/julian-bream-the-british-classical-guitarists-best-recordings\">Julian Bream&#8217;s best recordings<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>Walter de La Mare\u2019s poems explore the fleeting quality of life, and guitarist Sean Shibe brings an astonishing range of sonic effects, adding the subtlest of brushstrokes to Tritschler\u2019s glinting vocal palette.<\/p><p>\u2018Tom O\u2019Bedlam\u2019s Song\u2019, commissioned from a 25-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/sir-richard-rodney-bennett-1936-2012\">Richard Rodney Bennett<\/a>, features a tour de force from cellist Philip Higham, who joins Tritschler in a wild, moody descent into insanity.<\/p><p>The\u00a0<em>Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo<\/em>\u00a0were the first songs that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/benjamin-britten-composer\">Britten<\/a> specifically wrote for Pears, illustrating aspects of the tenor\u2019s voice that appealed to the composer. <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/benjamin-britten-and-peter-pears\">&#8216;An apparently perfect gay marriage before the concept was invented.&#8217;
