You might assume that the saxophone is a member of the brass family, but it\u2019s not! It\u2019s actually a woodwind instrument, with a smooth, smokey sound, and single reed like that of a clarinet. Commonly used in jazz music, it blends well with both wind and brass timbres and is one of the main instruments used for improvisation.<\/p>

Is the saxophone also used in classical music?<\/strong><\/h2>
Yes! Ravel<\/strong><\/a> used it in Bolero<\/strong><\/a><\/em> and there\u2019s famously a\u00a0tenor sax solo in the ‘Montagues and Capulets’ part of Prokofiev<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s ballet Romeo and Juliet. <\/em>There are a select handful of saxophone concertante works in the repertoire too: the French composer Jacques Ibert<\/a><\/strong> penned a Concertino da Camera for alto saxophone and 11 instruments, and the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos<\/a><\/strong> wrote a rather lovely Fantasia for Soprano Saxophone. <\/p>
So, it is a relative rarity in classical music – but where it crops up, it does so rather beautifully. <\/p>
<\/div><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/saxophone-invention\"><strong>When was the saxophone invented?<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-the-saxophone-sound-like\"><strong>What does the saxophone sound like?<\/strong><\/h2><p>Well, on day one of playing it, probably something like a honking goose! But ideally, it should sound warm and slinky, combining the piercing quality of a brass instrument with the smoothness of a woodwind instrument.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/best-classical-works-saxophone\"><strong>Best classical works for saxophone<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-was-it-invented\"><strong>When was it invented?<\/strong><\/h2><p>The saxophone was invented, in fact, relatively recently: in the 1840s, by the Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax (see what they’ve done with the name there?). The four main types of saxophone are soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophone, with the tenor being the most widely-used across various musical genres. The tenor has also been the instrument of choice for saxophonists including John Coltrane, Stan Goetz and Sonny Rollins.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/jess-gillam\"><strong>Who is Jess Gillam? It also contains the octave key, which raises the pitch of most notes by an octave when pressed.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-body\"><strong>The body<\/strong><\/h3><p>This is the main resonance chamber of the saxophone. It begins at bottom of the neck and ends at the bell.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-u-shaped-bow\"><strong>The U-shaped<\/strong> <strong>bow<\/strong><\/h3><p>This is the bottom end of the instrument where most saxophones make a u-turn and head back up. Without this U-shape, the saxophone would be very long and unwieldy.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-bell\"><strong>The bell<\/strong><\/h3><p>This is where sound is emitted from the saxophone. It usually ends in a decorative flare.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-saxophone-s-range\"><strong>What is the saxophone’s range?<\/strong><\/h2><p>Just over two and a half octaves, but notes above this can be produced with advanced embouchure techniques and fingering combinations.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/what-instruments-make-up-a-jazz-band\"><strong>What instruments make up a jazz band?<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-much-does-it-cost\"><strong>How much does it cost?<\/strong><\/h2><p>Typically anywhere between \u00a3300 and \u00a31000 for a starter saxophone. Another is Glazunov\u2019s highly romantic and deceptively difficult Saxophone Concerto. When shopping around, look for one without discolouration, fluctuating widths of grain, or unevenness on either side.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cork-grease\"><strong>Cork grease<\/strong><\/h3><p>This inexpensive stuff is essential for preserving the neck\u2019s cork. It\u2019s typically sold in tubes that look like lip balm, but don\u2019t try and put it on your lips.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-neck-strap\"><strong>A neck strap<\/strong><\/h3><p>This provides saxophonists with neck support and enables them to hold the saxophone comfortably.
