Narrowing down the USA’s richly varied folk music<\/a> tradition to just ten of the best American folk songs is no mean feat. Odds are that we’ve left out some real smashers, and you may well disagree with our choices.<\/strong><\/p>

Still, we’ve done our best to put together a list that at least whets the appetite for further exploration. Here it is.<\/p>

Best American folk songs<\/h2>
This Land is Your Land<\/b><\/h3>
Written by American singer Woody Guthrie in 1940, ‘This Land is Your Land’ was intended as a critical response to Irving Berlin’s ‘God Bless America’. Guthrie originally gave it the sarcastic title of ‘God Blessed America for Me’.<\/p>
But, following Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, he returned to supporting the US and its involvement in Europe, renaming his song in the process and dropping verses that were critical of the United States. Nowadays it is often dubbed as an alternative US national anthem<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>
<\/div><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-freight-train\"><b>Freight Train<\/b><\/h3><p>Although this song has been miscredited many times, the real artist behind it was Elizabeth Cotten (1893-1987): a self-taught African-American guitarist who, from the age of 13, worked as a maid, and only began performing publicly and recording in her sixties.<\/p><p>She wrote ‘Freight Train’ – probably her signature song – while still a young girl, inspired by the memory of a nearby train that she could hear from her childhood home in North Carolina. But it was decades later, with advocacy from the composer Ruth Crawford Seeger and her family, for whom Cotten worked as a housekeeper, that she got the recognition she deserved for it.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Freight Train Elizabeth Cotton\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IUK8emiWabU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-wayfaring-stranger\"><strong>The Wayfaring Stranger<\/strong><\/h3><p>It’s not known who originally set down the great\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-folk-music\/\"><strong>folk<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/gospel-music-guide\/\"><strong>gospel<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0song ‘The Wayfaring Stranger’. What we do know, though, is that probably originated the early 19th century and that, over the last 200 years many variations have appeared. The tale of a soul on its journey through life, ‘<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/wayfaring-stranger-lyrics\">The Wayfaring Stranger<\/a><\/strong>‘ has been performed and recorded by a host of great artists including\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/best-recordings-paul-robeson\/\">Paul Robeson,<\/a> <\/strong>Johnny Cash, Burl Ives,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and even Ed Sheeran. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-american-folk-songs-continued\">Best American folk songs, continued<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-man-of-constant-sorrow\"><strong>Man of Constant Sorrow<\/strong><\/h3><p>Channel your inner George Clooney now: ‘IIIII AAAM A MAYAAN OF CONSTANT SORROW…’ <\/p><p>Also known as ‘I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow’, this traditional American folk song will be best known to many through its appearance in the Coen Brothers’ 2000 film <em>O Brother, Where Art Thou?<\/em> Its origins, however, reach back much further.<\/p><p>It was first popularised by Dick Burnett, a partially blind fiddler from Kentucky, in around 1913, when it featured in a songbook under the title ‘Farewell Song’. It got its current title 15 years later, in a version performed and recorded by Emry Arthur.<\/p><p>Fast forward another couple of decades and we find the Stanley Brothers popularizing the song in the 1950s. Throughout the Sixties the song got various other recordings at the hands of a variety of major-league singers including Bob Dylan, one of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/best-folk-singers-10-of-the-most-famous\">greatest folk singers of all time<\/a><\/strong>. It’s also had a gender makeover, courtesy of Joan Baez who repurposed it to ‘”‘Girl of Constant Sorrow’. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-simple-gifts\"><strong>Simple Gifts<\/strong><\/h3><p>This traditional song originates in a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shakers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shaker<\/a><\/strong> community in Maine, in the northeastern United States. To ve precise, it’s usually credited to Elder Joseph Brackett from the Shaker community in Alfred, Maine. ‘Simple Gifts’ was written in around 1848: however, it had to wait almost a century to reach a wider audience. That happened in 1944, when the great American composer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/aaron-copland\">Aaron Copland<\/a><\/strong> used the melody for the score of the ballet, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/a-guide-to-coplands-appalachian-spring-and-its-best-recordings\"><strong>Appalachian Spring<\/strong><\/a><\/em>, that he created alongside choreographer Martha Graham.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-home-on-the-range\"><strong>Home on the Range<\/strong><\/h3><p>This classic cowboy song is often referred to as the American West’s unofficial anthem The lyrics came from one Dr Brewster M. Higley of Smith County, Kansas, originally as the poem ‘My Western Home’, composed in around 1872.<\/p><p>Higley’s native state of Kansas adopted ‘Home on the Range; as its state song in 1947. It is one of the University of Kansas’s seven fight songs, and the university band, the Marching Jayhawks, typically performs ‘Home on the Range’ at the climax of each KU home athletic event.<\/p><p>Here are the lyrics to ‘<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/home-on-the-range-lyrics\">Home on the Range<\/a><\/strong>‘.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-down-by-the-riverside\"><strong>Down by the Riverside<\/strong><\/h3><p>With roots dating back to before the American Civil War, this African-American spiritual was first published in 1918. By World War II there were at least 14 black gospel recordings of ‘<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/down-by-the-riverside-lyrics\/\">Down by the Riverside<\/a><\/strong>‘. It was the first song that Elvis Presley ever recorded, and has also been covered by the likes of the Stanley Brothers, Patsy Cline and Sir Paul McCartney. McClintock based the song on memories of hoboing through the United States as a youth while working for the railroad as a brakeman. <\/p><p>The original version, which he sang as a street busker, was significantly more disturbing, describing a child being recruited into hobo life. Comprising a traditional tune in a complex arrangement, it showcases Watson’s formidable finger-picking technique.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-group highlight-box is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-groupinner-container\"><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/french-christmas-songs\/\"><strong>French Christmas songs: 8 of the best<\/strong><\/a><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/polish-christmas-carols\/\">Polish Christmas carols: 7 of the best <\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/the-best-christmas-classical-music-albums\/\">recordings<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-michael-row-the-boat-ashore\"><strong>Michael, Row the Boat Ashore<\/strong><\/h3><p>A haunting African-American spiritual, ‘<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/michael-row-the-boat-ashore-lyrics\/\">Michael, Row the Boat Ashore<\/a><\/strong>‘ was sung on St Helena Island, South Carolina, by former slaves whose owners had abandoned the island during the American Civil War.<\/p><p>William Francis Allen, an academic who, with his wife, ran a school for newly-emancipated slaves, reported in 1863 that the former slaves sang the song as they rowed him in a boat across Station Creek. His cousin, Charles Pickard Ware, also wrote down the song in music notation as he heard the freedmen sing it.<\/p><p>He and Allen later joined forces with the song collector Lucy McKim Garrison to publish it in their joint volume <em>Slave Songs of the United States<\/em>. It is still one of the US’s most famous folk songs, sung by children and adults alike.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embedwrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Highwaymen "Michael, Row The Boat Ashore" on The Ed Sullivan Show\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1RwNs8wHRqk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mr-tambourine-man\"><b>Mr Tambourine Man<\/b><\/h3><p>Well-loved for its expansive <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-melody\">melody<\/a><\/strong> and poetic, surrealist lyrics, this song was written in 1964 by Bob Dylan, who credited French poet Arthur Rimbaud and Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini as inspirations.<\/p><p>People have variously interpreted it as a paean to drugs, a vision of mortality, or a meditation on the meaning of escape. One thing is certain though: it’s as catchy as anything, which helps to explain why it has been performed and recorded so many times by artists as diverse as the Byrds, Judy Collins, Odetta, and Stevie Wonder.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embedwrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mr. Tambourine Man (Live at the Newport Folk Festival. 1964)\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OeP4FFr88SQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-go-tell-it-on-the-mountain\"><b> Go Tell it on the Mountain<\/b><\/h3><p>This anonymous African-American spiritual hymn dates back to the mid-19th century. John Wesley Work Jr, who collected spirituals, first published it in 1907 in his book New Jubilee Songs and Folk Songs of the American Negro.<\/p><p>But by then it had already come to the public eye thanks to the Fisk Jubilee Singers, an African-American a cappella ensemble, who toured the country in the 19th century singing spirituals to raise money for the newly-created college for blacks following the abolition of slavery. Many of his recordings were lost, one of them confiscated in a DEA drug raid. Yet, in the years since his death he has been elevated to something of a folk hero, and ‘Clay Pigeons’ – popularised in a cover by John Prine – is probably his best-known song.
