Its official premiere took place in London\u2019s Green Park.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-did-the-music-for-the-royal-fireworks-accompany-a-fireworks-display\">Did the <em>Music for the Royal Fireworks<\/em> accompany a fireworks display?<\/h2><p>Somewhat surprisingly, Handel\u2019s grandiose music, conceived for huge instrumental forces, made relatively little impact at its premiere. This was partly because the planned accompanying ostentatious fireworks display ultimately proved to be something of a damp squib.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/five-essential-works-handel\">Five essential works by Handel<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Fortunately, the work had received a far more enthusiastic response a week earlier when an audience of 12,000 attended its first public rehearsal in Vauxhall Gardens.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Handel - Music for the Royal Fireworks (Proms 2012)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fNqJ8mED1VE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Handel&#8217;s Music for the Royal Fireworks, performed in 2012 at the BBC Proms<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-work-s-structure\">What is the work&#8217;s structure?<\/h2><p><em>Music for the Royal Fireworks<\/em> is a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-suite\">suite<\/a><\/strong> in five movements. Handel opens the work with a rousing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-overture\">Overture<\/a><\/strong> in the French Style that alternates slow and fast sections.\u00a0<\/p><p>Following this come a delightful Bourr\u00e9e and two elegant <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-minuet\">Menuets<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p><p>These frame two appropriately named movements, \u2018La Paix\u2019 (Peace), a slow pastoral <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-largo\">Largo<\/a><\/strong> with characteristically gentle Sicilian rhythms, and \u2018La R\u00e9jouissance\u2019 (Rejoicing), a marvellously upbeat <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/fanfare-meaning\">fanfare<\/a><\/strong>-like character piece. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/george-frideric-handel-style\">Handel&#8217;s musical style explained<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-instruments-feature-in-music-for-the-royal-fireworks\">What instruments feature in <em>Music for the Royal Fireworks<\/em>?<\/h2><p>King George II specified that the piece should be played by a military band without <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/string-instruments\">stringed instruments<\/a><\/strong>. Despite his efforts to ensure that everything would pass on to his daughter Maria Theresa with as little dispute as possible, Austria\u2019s neighbours started to lick their lips and see how they could turn the succession to their advantage.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/royal-weddings-best-classical-music-choices\">Royal weddings: the best classical music choices<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>In December, Prussia invaded Silesia, sparking a conflict that soon saw them join in an alliance with France (who had their eyes on the Austrian Netherlands), Bavaria, Spain, Sweden and Saxony. Coming out in support of Austria, meanwhile, were Russia, the United Provinces and, especially, Britain \u2013 as he was also the Elector of Hanover, George II was understandably keen to keep his home patch out of Prussian paws.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/musical-life-king-henry-viii\">The musical life of King Henry VIII<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Though Prussia and Austria made peace in 1742, Austria and Britain continued to wage war against the French, with matters inevitably spreading to French and British colonial territories.
