Here’s a brief introduction to the British mezzo-soprano Alice Coote, who performs at the 2024 BBC Proms<\/a><\/strong> on Thursday 25 July and who’s earned an enviable reputation for her captivating performances across a wide range of operatic roles.<\/p>

Who is Alice Coote?<\/h2>
A British\u00a0mezzo-soprano who has graced opera stages the world over, Alice Coote has won recognition for her superb performances across a broad range of opera styles and roles. She sings beautifully across a wide range of repertoire, from early and\u00a0Baroque<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0music to contemporary pieces. She’s also captivated in a range of both male and female roles. \u00a0<\/p>
Two more key moments in Alice Coote’s life: she has had a work composed specifically for her, the song cycle\u00a0The Voice of Desire<\/em> by British composer Judith Weir<\/a><\/strong>. And… she was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE)\u00a0for services to music in Queen Elizabeth’s\u00a02018 Birthday honours list. <\/p>

<\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-alice-coote-performing-at-the-proms\">What’s Alice Coote performing at the Proms?<\/h2>She’ll be at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/bbc-proms-25-july-2024\">Prom 9<\/a><\/strong> on Thursday 25 July, singing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/gustav-mahler\">Gustav Mahler’s<\/a><\/strong> deeply emotional song cycle Kindertotenlieder<\/em> in company with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and conductor Ryan Wigglesworth. Those forces will also give us performances of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/johannes-brahms\">Johannes Brahms<\/a><\/strong>‘s\u00a0emotive and enigmatic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/brahms-symphony-3\">Symphony No. 3<\/a><\/strong> in F major and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/arnold-schoenberg\">Arnold Schoenberg<\/a><\/strong>‘s passionate Expressionist masterpiece\u00a0Verkl\u00e4rte Nacht<\/em>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tell-us-more-about-mahler-s-kindertotenlieder\">Tell us more about Mahler’s\u00a0Kindertotenlieder<\/em><\/h2>The Kindertotenlieder<\/em> are a five-part song cycle by Mahler. The songs themselves are musical\u00a0settings of five poems by the German poet Friedrich R\u00fcckert, also the source of Mahler’s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/the-best-recordings-of-mahlers-ruckert-lieder\">R\u00fcckert Lieder<\/a><\/strong><\/em> song cycle.<\/p>R\u00fcckert actually set down more than 400\u00a0Kindertodtenlieder<\/em> after the tragic death of two of his children from scarlet fever. Mahler selected five of them, scoring them for soloist (typically a baritone or mezzo-soprano), accompanied by a chamber orchestra.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-and-what-is-a-mezzo-soprano\">And what is a mezzo-soprano?<\/h2>We’ve mentioned that Alice Coote is a mezzo-soprano. Other famous mezzos besides Alice Coote include then Scottish singer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-is-karen-cargill\">Karen Cargill<\/a><\/strong>, and the American mezzo and former BBC Music Magazine Personality of the Year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-jamie-barton\">Jamie Barton<\/a><\/strong>.
