What’s on at the Proms today?<\/h2>
Today’s Prom, Prom 9, features the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and conductor Ryan Wigglesworth in performances of Johannes Brahms<\/a><\/strong>‘s\u00a0emotive Symphony No. 3<\/a><\/strong> in F major and\u00a0Arnold Schoenberg<\/a><\/strong>‘s passionate Expressionist masterpiece\u00a0Verkl\u00e4rte Nacht<\/em>.<\/p>
<\/div><\/figure><p>Conductor and orchestra are also joined by mezzo-soprano Alice Coote for\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/gustav-mahler\">Gustav Mahler’<\/a><\/strong>s\u00a01904 song cycle <em>Kindertotenlieder<\/em> (<em>Songs on the Death of Children<\/em>). This emotional song cycle features musical\u00a0settings of five poems by the German poet Friedrich R\u00fcckert, who also provided the texts for another Mahler song cycle, the <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/the-best-recordings-of-mahlers-ruckert-lieder\">R\u00fcckert Lieder<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-mahler-s-kindertotenlieder\">What are Mahler’s <em>Kindertotenlieder<\/em>?<\/h2><p>R\u00fcckert himself composed some 428\u00a0<em>Kindertodtenlieder<\/em>, in a huge outpouring of grief after the illness and death, from scarlet fever, of two of his children. Mahler selected five of them, and between 1901 and 1904 scored them for a vocal soloist (usually a baritone or mezzo-soprano), accompanied by a chamber orchestra featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/flute\">flutes<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/oboe-vs-clarinet\">oboes<\/a><\/strong>, clarinets, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/the-bassoon-a-guide-to-the-orchestras-largest-wind-instrument\">bassoons<\/a><\/strong>, horns, percussion, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/what-is-a-harp\">harp<\/a><\/strong>, strings and more. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/the-best-flute-solos-in-orchestral-works\">Classical music’s best flute solos<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/what-are-woodwind-instruments-meet-the-members-of-the-woodwind-family\">A guide to the woodwind family<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Mahler was very specific that the songs should be performed in the order he prescribed: they were, he said, ‘intended as one inseparate unit, and in performing them their continuity should not be interfered with’. Like R\u00fcckert’s poems, the songs convey a mix of emotions including anguished pain, a desperate hope for the children to return, and resignation.
