The opera follows the life story of the Queen’s predecessor, Elizabeth I. ‘Gloriana’ was a nickname bestowed on her by the 16th-century poet Edmund Spenser. Though the opera was a critical failure, and rarely performed today, a series of Courtly Dances celebrating the Queen’s virtues are often performed as a concert piece.

Gloriana’s main narrative thrust is the relationship between Queen Elizabeth and Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex. Depicting Elizabeth I as a somewhat flawed queen, Gloriana was not a success for Britten. However, a symphonic suite was taken from it, which remains very popular and which you’ll hear today. Its Courtly Dances, in particular, are well loved.

What about Elgar’s Symphony No. 2?

Begun a couple of years after his acclaimed First Symphony, Elgar’s Symphony No. 2 is in many ways a more thoughtful work than its boisterous, confident predecessor.
