Meet Sakari Oramo, the chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.<\/p>

He will be appearing at the BBC Proms four times this year, including at the Last Night of the Proms. But what else do we know about Sakari?<\/p>

Who is Sakari Oramo?<\/h2>
Sakari Oramo, 58, is a Finnish conductor who has been chief conductor of the BBC Symphony <\/strong><\/a>Orchestra<\/strong><\/a> since 2013. His links with England go back much further than that, however, as he was principal conductor and then music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra from 1996 to 2008. He is well known as an ardent champion of British music, and in 2009 was awarded an honorary OBE for services to music in Birmingham.<\/p>
<\/div><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-bbc-proms-is-sakari-oramo-conducting-this-year\">What BBC Proms is Sakari Oramo conducting this year?<\/h3><p>Sakari Oramo conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/bbc-proms\"><strong>BBC Proms<\/strong><\/a> in 2024. In two of them, he and his players celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/gustav-holst\">Gustav Holst<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 with performances of the British composer\u2019s <em>The Cloud Messenger<\/em> (plus the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/best-recordings-elgar-cello-concerto\"><strong>Elgar<\/strong> <strong>Cello Concerto<\/strong><\/a>) on 3 August and then, on 25 August, <em>The Planets<\/em>. In between these, on 9 August they scale the mighty peaks of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/richard-strauss\">Richard Strauss<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Alpine Symphony<\/em>. And then, on Saturday 14 September, it\u2019s the big one: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/bbc-proms\/last-night-of-the-proms-all-you-need-to-know\"><strong>Last Night of the Proms<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/bbc-proms\/2024-bbc-proms-listings\"><strong>BBC Proms 2024: your complete guide to every concert<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-has-sakari-oramo-conducted-the-last-night-before\">Has Sakari Oramo conducted the Last Night before?<\/h2><p>Yes. On no fewer than five occasions, in fact \u2013 in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2021. In doing so, he has followed in the recent tradition of chief conductors of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in conducting the Last Night on regular occasions, while also leaving the event free for different conductors to enjoy the spotlight in other years.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-music-is-sakari-oramo-best-known-for\">What music is Sakari Oramo best known for?<\/h2><p>Though very much an all-rounder, he has won plaudits for his performances and recordings of orchestral and choral works by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/best-british-composers\">British composers<\/a><\/strong>. During his time at the CBSO, for instance, he introduced the music of John Foulds (1889-1930) to many listeners through two acclaimed discs of little-known composer\u2019s orchestral works. <\/p><p>On more familiar ground, in 2008 the Elgar Society presented him with the prestigious Elgar Medal for his devotion to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/edward-elgar\">great composer\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> music including, in 2007, performances of all three oratorios \u2013 <em>The Dream of Gerontius<\/em>, <em>The Apostles<\/em> and <em>The Kingdom<\/em> \u2013 at Birmingham\u2019s Symphony Hall. It\u2019s not all about Britain, however, and Oramo\u2019s performances and recordings of Finnish music, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/jean-sibelius\"><strong>Sibelius<\/strong><\/a>, are also particularly highly rated.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embedwrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sibelius: Finlandia (Prom 75)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fE0RbPsC9uE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sakari Oramo conducts Sibelius’s Finlandia at the BBC Proms<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-he-conduct-any-orchestras-outside-britain\">Does he conduct any orchestras outside Britain?<\/h3><p>Yes. His previous major posts have included those of chief conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in his home country and, in neighbouring Sweden, chief conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. For 14 years, he was also principal conductor of West Coast Kokkola Opera, also in Finland.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-was-sakari-oramo-always-a-conductor\">Was Sakari Oramo always a conductor?<\/h3><p>No. Sakari Oramo began his career as a violinist. Before training as a conductor, he was concertmaster (leader) of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and he occasionally still plays in public \u2013 in 2014, for instance, he made his Proms debut as a violinist, joining fellow fiddler Janine Jansen for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/sergey-prokofiev\">Prokofiev<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Sonata in C major for two violins. The move from bow to baton came in his 20s, in 1989. \u2018In a way, stepping up from the first desk of the violins to the conductor\u2019s podium is the longest step in musical life,\u2019 Oramo told <em>BBC Music Magazine<\/em>\u2019s <em>All The Right Notes<\/em> podcast earlier this year. <\/p><p>\u2018On the other hand, when I made that step, I had both a lot of support and many precedents \u2013 most Finnish conductors have been orchestral musicians beforehand. Not all have been violinists, but former string players do have a special possibility to shape an orchestra\u2019s sound because so many of the musicians within it are string players \u2013 if you have an idea about string playing and sound, it makes it that much easier to give specific instructions.\u2019<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embedwrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Stravinsky Petrushka \/ Royal Stockholm Phiharmonic Orchestra \/ Sakari Oramo\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rA0bVhQxsS4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sakari Oramo conducts the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-did-sakari-oramo-learn-to-conduct\">Where did Sakari Oramo learn to conduct?<\/h3><p>Sakari Oramo was a pupil of the famous conducting teacher Jorma Panula, whose other pupils at Helsinki\u2019s Sibelius Academy have included Esa-Pekka Salonen, Osmo V\u00e4nska, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/dalia-stasevska\">Dalia Stasevska<\/a><\/strong> and Santtu-Matias Rouvali, all of whom have held important conducting posts in Britain and the US. \u2018Jorma didn\u2019t teach us all to be similar as conductors; he taught us distinctly to be different\u2019 Oramo has told <em>BBC Music Magazine<\/em>. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/dalia-stasevksa-on-conducting-the-first-and-last-nights-of-the-proms\">Dalia Stasevska on conducting the First and Last Night of the Proms<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>\u2018He gave us a method of approaching music and conducting, but not a technical method of doing so. Many conducting teachers create clones of themselves or of each other, but Jorma made sure that all of his students conducted according to their own personality and according to their own personal needs. He is, meanwhile, ferociously loyal to musicians, as was demonstrated when, last year, he led the protests against the proposed closure of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/bbc-singers\"><strong>BBC Singers<\/strong><\/a>, despite having such a high-profile BBC profile himself. Following discussions, the decision was later reversed.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-sakari-oramo-have-a-musical-family\">Does Sakari Oramo have a musical family?<\/h3><p>He is married to the leading Finnish soprano Anu Komsi, who herself has appeared at the BBC Proms on five occasions and who will this year be singing in the world premiere of Lara Poe\u2019s <em>Laulut maaseudulta<\/em> (Songs from the Countryside) in the same Prom as Holst\u2019s <em>The Planets<\/em>.
