Here’s your essential info for today’s concert at the BBC Proms 2024, taking place at the Royal Albert Hall<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>

What’s on at the BBC Proms today?<\/h2>
Today’s Prom, Prom 17, features a very tempting array of works by four great composers. The programme includes Tchaikovsky<\/a><\/strong>‘s\u00a0Francesca da Rimini<\/em>. This tone poem<\/a><\/strong> takes its inspiration from the tragic story of Francesca da Rimini, a beautiful Medieval noblewoman immortalized in The Divine Comedy<\/em> by Dante Alighieri.<\/p>
You’ll also hear Charles Ives’s<\/a><\/strong> Three Places in New England<\/em>, a three-movement orchestral composition for orchestra in three movements by American composer Charles Ives. It was written mainly between 1911 and 1914, but with sketches dating as far back as 1903 and last revisions made in 1929.<\/p>
<\/div><\/figure><p>Also on the programme is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/claude-debussy\">Debussy<\/a><\/strong>‘s\u00a0Nocturnes, another three-movement orchestral work. Strongly Impressionistic in feel, the Nocturnes are based on poems from Henri de R\u00e9gnier’s 1890 work <em>Po\u00e8mes anciens et romanesques<\/em>.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/debussys-nocturnes-story\">The story of Debussy’s Nocturnes<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tonight-s-highlight-fireworks-from-ravel\">Tonight’s highlight: fireworks from Ravel<\/h2><p>The highlight of the evening, arguably, is a performance of Maurice Ravel’s captivating, jazz-infused Piano Concerto in G major. This amazing work begins with the crack of a whip, or is it the snapping open of the box that will reveal the magical delights to follow? <\/p><p>Then we get wonderful, jazz-tinted melodies tumbling over each other, in a hypnotic, sultry soundworld that also draws on Basque and Spanish music. It’s a wonderful piece but it also has emotional depth. The first movement is festive, the second more reflective. Then there’s the Finale, which moves through various surprising <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/musical-keys-explained\">key signatures<\/a><\/strong> on its journey back to the carnivalesque world of the opening movement. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/gaspard-de-la-nuit\"><em>Gaspard de la Nuit<\/em>: a guide to Ravel\u2019s haunting piano cycle and its best recordings<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>It’s an incredible work, and was one of the first names on the teamsheet when we compiled our list of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/greatest-piano-concertos-all-time\">greatest piano concertos of all time<\/a><\/strong>. It’s also been a favourite showpiece for many of the world’s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/20-greatest-pianists-all-time\">greatest pianists<\/a><\/strong>, including <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-is-yuja-wang-a-guide-to-the-celebrated-pianist-and-her-best-recordings\">Yuja Wang<\/a><\/strong> (see below) and the legendary <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/martha-argerich-2\">Martha Argerich<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Yuja Wang - Ravel G Major Piano Concerto plus encores\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3iFbM_08H7U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-s-performing-at-the-bbc-proms-today\">Who’s performing at the BBC Proms today?<\/h2><p>Tonight’s performers are the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the brilliant Russian conductor Vasily Petrenko. They are joined by the Philharmonia Chorus for the third movement of Debussy’s Nocturnes. And the soloist in the Ravel <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-concerto\">concerto<\/a><\/strong> is another Russian, the pianist Denis Kozhukhin.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-time-does-the-bbc-proms-concert-start-today\">What time does the BBC Proms concert start today? <\/h2><p>Prom 17 kicks off at 7.30pm. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-and-how-much-are-tickets\">And how much are tickets?<\/h2><p>Tickets range from \u00a311 to \u00a354.
