The Four Temperaments; Schnittke: Piano Concerto<br\/>Anna Gourari (piano); Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana\/Markus Poschner<br\/><em>ECM 4875453\u00a0\u00a0\u00a078:35 mins\u00a0<\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2024\/07\/CONCERTO-CHOICE-AUDIO-Konzert-fuer-Klavier-und-Streichorchester.mp3\"\/><\/figure><h6 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-clip-schnittke-s-piano-concerto-konzert-fuer-klavier-und-streichorchester\">Clip: Schnittke&#8217;s Piano Concerto (Konzert fuer Klavier und Streichorchester)<\/h6><p>At first glance, Alfred Schnittke\u2019s free-wheeling style seems worlds apart from Paul <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/paul-hindemith\">Hindemith<\/a>\u2019s disciplined and emotionally tempered outlook. <\/p><p>On closer examination, however, both composers strove to write music that had an immediate impact. <\/p><p>The problem with Hindemith is that all too often his achievement has been undermined by dry colourless performances that make his music sound earnest and worthy.<\/p><p>Fortunately, this issue doesn\u2019t arise with Anna Gourari\u2019s mercurial account of the solo piano part in the ballet\u00a0<em>The Four Temperaments<\/em>. <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/a-z-piano-13\">What is the longest piece of piano music?<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/who-invented-the-piano-recital\">Who invented the piano recital?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>She extracts a dizzying range of colours from Hindemith\u2019s ingeniously constructed score. <\/p><p>At one moment she\u2019s playful and meditative, and then suddenly she breaks out into full-frontal percussive aggression. <\/p><p>The string section of the Orchestra della Sivzzera Italiana under Markus Poschner responds incisively to Gourari\u2019s volatile playing, thereby enhancing my estimation of an unjustly neglected work that on this evidence deserves a permanent place in the repertoire.<\/p><p>In stark contrast, the Schnittke is one of the most frequently performed of all late-20th-century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-concerto\">concerto<\/a>s. <\/p><p>As with so many of this composer\u2019s works, it takes us on an emotionally charged journey with extreme juxtapositions of gesture. <\/p><p>As with the Hindemith, Gourari delivers a charismatic, engaging interpretation.<\/p><p>Hindemith\u2019s \u2018Mathis der Maler\u2019 Symphony restores a semblance of stability, and Poschner\u2019s unfussy yet carefully nuanced interpretation matches some of the finest available recordings of this work.\u00a0<em>Erik Levi<\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Anna Gourari - Hindemith, Schnittke (new album out now) | ECM Records\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1IGdjWPwemE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
