Allegretto<\/h6><p>An excellent work we rarely hear is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/franz-schubert\">Schubert\u2019<\/a>s four-hand\u00a0<em>Divertissement \u00e0 la hongroise<\/em>, based on a song the composer chanced to hear a Hungarian kitchen-maid singing as she worked in Count Esterh\u00e1zy\u2019s palace. Gently modal and mildly exploratory, it gets bewitching treatment here by Pavel Kolesnikov and Samson Tsoy.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/instruments\/four-hand-piano-when-did-the-fashion-for-piano-four-hands-start\">Four-hand Piano&#8230; how it started<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>But it\u2019s not the primary spur for this album. That honour goes to\u00a0<em>Trompe-l\u2019\u0153il<\/em>, written for this adventurous duo by the Ukrainian-born composer Leonid Desyatnikov, and here sandwiched between the aforesaid\u00a0<em>Divertissement<\/em>\u00a0and Schubert\u2019s\u00a0<em>Fantasie<\/em>\u00a0in F minor. <\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/best-ukrainian-music\">Six Ukrainian works you should know<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>Desyatnikov imagines his pieces as \u2018the follow-up to \u2013 or rough draft of \u2013 Schubert\u2019s\u00a0<em>Fantasie<\/em>.\u2019<\/p><p>Yes, Schubert\u2019s motifs and gestures are all there, but scattered and caricatured in wrong-note form; it\u2019s like seeing fragments of a much-loved tapestry surfacing then sinking from view in a sea of musical debris. <\/p><p>It all suggests an arduous \u2013 and rather tedious \u2013 experiment in search of a solution, which only arrives with the\u00a0<em>Fantaisie<\/em>\u00a0itself.<\/p><p>Having heard the premiere of this programme live, I am struck by how different it sounds on the album, and that is thanks to some weird sonic tinkering in the studio. <\/p><p>For the Desyatnikov, greeting cards were apparently placed \u2018vertically\u2019 on the strings to dampen the resonance, while for the Schubert, a silk scarf was placed on the strings.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/schubert-style-guide\">Schubert: A style guide&#8230;<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>All that\u2019s beyond my humble ken, but in this recording the Schubert works emerge as absolutely magical. <\/p><p>The\u00a0<em>Divertissement<\/em>\u00a0elicits a sumptuous softness, while the\u00a0<em>Fantaisie<\/em>\u00a0creates the impression of vast and intensely dramatic landscapes.\u00a0<em>Michael Church<\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"[NEW RELEASE] Franz Schubert | Works for piano four-hands | Pavel Kolesnikov, Samson Tsoy\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WDhZkpcEvyU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
