Who is Anthony McGill?<\/h2>
Anthony McGill has been principal clarinet<\/a><\/strong> of the New York Philharmonic since 2014. He is the first African-American principal player in the organisation’s history.<\/p>

Anthony McGill performs regularly as a soloist and chamber musician<\/a><\/strong>. In 2020 he won the Avery Fisher Prize. In 2009 he took part in the inauguration of President Barack Obama, premiering a piece by John Williams<\/a><\/strong> and performing alongside violinist<\/a><\/strong> Itzhak Perlman, cellist<\/a><\/strong> Yo-Yo Ma<\/a><\/strong>, and pianist<\/a><\/strong> Gabriela Montero<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>
\u2018I have eclectic tastes as a musician, and I\u2019ve fortunately gotten to work with a lot of different composers and play a lot of different types of music,\u2019 he told\u00a0BBC Music Magazine<\/em>.<\/p>

He has also worked with Emanuel Ax, Yefim Bronfman, Gil Shaham, Midori, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/mitsuko-uchida-awarded-rps-gold-medal\">Mitsuko Uchida<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/lang-lang\">Lang Lang<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><p>\u2018I love the Pacifica Quartet musicians; they\u2019re my recording partners, but also friends and colleagues,\u2019 he told us. \u2018I love their intensity of music-making and their dedication to the artform. They play with such passion, musicianship and emotion.\u2019<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-does-anthony-mcgill-teach\">Where does Anthony McGill teach?<\/h2><p>McGill serves on the faculty of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/the-juilliard-school-history-and-famous-alumni\">The Juilliard School<\/a><\/strong> and also at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he holds the William R. and Hyunah Yu Brody Distinguished Chair.\u00a0<\/p><p>He is the artistic director for Juilliard\u2019s Music Advancement Program, which trains young musicians from backgrounds underrepresented in classical music. We went to music school in the downtown area every Saturday for many years \u2013 and we recorded this album in the same building. My brother was older and I looked up to him.
