Read on you find out all you need to know about the BBC Proms<\/a><\/strong> concert (Prom 32) taking place today, Monday 12 August, at London’s Royal Albert Hall<\/a><\/strong>. Sir Karl Jenkins, Beethoven, Jess Gillam… there are plenty of treats in store. <\/p>

What’s on at the BBC Proms today?<\/h2>
Today’s Prom (Prom 32) opens with the Concert Overture by the Welsh composer Grace Williams (1906-77). Probably Wales’s greatest female composer to date, Williams was also the first British woman to score a feature film (1949’s Blue Scar<\/em>). Her other popular works include a Violin Concerto (1950), a Sinfonia Concertante for piano and orchestra (1941), and Penillion<\/em>, written for the National Youth Orchestra of Wales in 1955.<\/p>
After that we will hear\u00a0Stravaganza<\/em>, a\u00a0<\/em>BBC commission by Sir\u00a0Karl Jenkins<\/a><\/strong>. Composed in 2019 and deriving from the Italian word for ‘eccentric’, it’s a four-movement work for saxophone and orchestra. Tonight’s soloist, and the work’s dedicatee, is the captivating saxophonist and BBC Radio 3 presenter Jess Gillam<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>
<\/div><\/figure><p>As Sir Karl explains, the concerto is inspired by the fact that Gillam initially learned the saxophone in a carnival, having first tried the stilts and then the drums. ‘The work is in four movements, and a certain eccentricity or quirkiness pervades throughout,’ Jenkins explains. ‘In many ways it is programmatic but the listener may create her or his eccentric fantasies.’ <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/coronation-composer-karl-jenkins-breaks-uk-chart-record\">Coronation composer Sir Karl Jenkins breaks UK chart record<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Did you know? Jess Gillam was a finalist at the 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year. Her fellow finalists in what was something of a bumper year were the horn player Ben Goldscheider and cellist (and eventual winner) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/sheku-kanneh-mason\"><strong>Sheku Kanneh-Mason<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/who-are-the-members-of-the-kanneh-mason-family\">The Kanneh-Masons: meet Britain’s most talented musical family<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Next on the programme is the Overture No. 1 by the supremely talented and, let’s say it, somewhat underrated French composer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/farrenc-louise\">Louise Farrenc<\/a><\/strong>. From the era of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/robert-schumann\">Schumann<\/a><\/strong> and following that of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/ludwig-van-beethoven\">Beethoven<\/a><\/strong>, Farrenc’s music bears certain similarities to these composers, but she also has a soundworld all her own. She’s a very worthy entry in our list of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/best-french-composers-ever\">greatest French composers of all time<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/six-best-works-louise-farrenc\">Six of the best: works by Louise Farrenc<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Talking of Beethoven, we finish tonight with his masterful, joyous, and rhythmically charged <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/guide-beethovens-symphony-no-7\">Seventh Symphony<\/a><\/strong>. This is Beethoven at his most vigorous, spontaneous and effervescent. Composer and author\u00a0Antony Hopkins\u00a0noted that ‘the notes seem to fly off the page as we are borne along on a floodtide of inspired invention’, while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Wagner\"><strong>Richard <\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/richard-wagner\"><strong>Wagner<\/strong><\/a>, impressed by the Seventh’s lively rhythms, called it the ‘apotheosis\u00a0of the dance.’<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beethoven - Symphony No. 7 - Iv\u00e1n Fischer | Concertgebouworkest\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-4788Tmz9Zo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-is-performing-at-tonight-s-prom\">Who is performing at tonight’s Prom?<\/h2><p>As we mentioned, the soloist for Karl Jenkins’s <em>Stravaganza<\/em> is saxophonist Jess Gillam. Accompanying Jess, and performing tonight’s other works, will be the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and conductor Nil Venditti.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-today-s-bbc-prom-on-tv\">Is today’s BBC Prom on TV?<\/h2><p>No, although many of the Proms are on TV: check our guide to all the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/bbc-proms\/when-are-bbc-proms-tv\">televised 2024 BBC Proms<\/a><\/strong> for updates.
