And while he may well have been thinking of all sorts of other kinds of rock music \u2013 album releases that year from The Who, Queen, The Rolling Stones or David Bowie \u2013 I like to think he was referring to the high water mark, 50 years ago, of that most unique of species: Progressive Rock. Or, to use its\u00a0ugly abbreviation, Prog Rock.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-it-shared-classical-music-s-ambition-and-drama\">It shared classical music&#8217;s ambition and drama <\/h2><p>Instead of being Glam, Hard, Soft or Bluesy, this largely British sub-genre grew out of The Beatles&#8217; <em>Sgt. Pepper<\/em> and psychedelia in the late 1960s and flourished globally for a few years before its snarling, consciously primal antipode, Punk, conspired (with only partial success) to snuff it out in time for the Queen\u2019s Silver Jubilee in 1977.\u00a0<\/p><p>From my first teenage encounters, I knew that this was the \u2018pop music\u2019 which shared the ambition, breadth and drama of classical music. Here was the same rich <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-harmony-in-music\">harmonic<\/a><\/strong> vocabulary and technical mastery, a rhythmic sophistication that went far beyond four beats in a bar, a searching pursuit of extended structures and the same textural breadth that ranged from delicately intimate to floor-shakingly explosive. \u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Genesis - Watcher Of The Skies (Official Audio)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2agWXrNJGjg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>With the help of iconic album cover artwork from the likes of Roger Dean (Yes) and Storm Thorgerson\/Hipgnosis (Pink Floyd\/Genesis), the music has a very particular look, evoking an era of loon pants, lank long hair and the wafting clouds of perfumed joints. As a result, some of it fares badly from being locked into that period and sounds badly dated now.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-prog-s-leaders-and-followers\">Prog&#8217;s leaders&#8230; and followers<\/h2><p>Yes, much of prog rock has been consigned, with the assistance of elapsed time, to the category of barely listened to and the second-rate. Just as there are a lot of Vanhals and Wagenseils for every <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/joseph-haydn\">Haydn<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/mozart\">Mozart<\/a><\/strong>, the Prog giants like Genesis, Pink Floyd and Yes have their Caravans and Gentle Giants in their rear view too.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Prog rock giants Yes play Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK, 1978. Pic: Getty Images &#8211; Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Progressive influences are present in sibling contemporaries. Some say, for example, that because of their broader, more varied canvases, \u2018Bohemian Rhapsody\u2019 is Queen\u2019s proggiest moment, \u2018Stairway to Heaven\u2019 Led Zeppelin\u2019s and \u2018Fool\u2019s Overture\u2019 Supertramp\u2019s. There is a more composed, proto-minimalist aspect to Mike Oldfield\u2019s \u2018Tubular Bells\u2019 or Tangerine Dream\u2019s extended synthscapes. <\/p><p>Via trace elements in anything from Kate Bush to Radiohead, Prog lives on decades later in bands like Porcupine Tree and Big Big Train, or the burgeoning tribute band scene. But if we are thinking about what was happening back in 1974 or thereabouts, in the studio or in concert, the essence of Progressive Rock at its very best is defined by the work of just 20-or-so young men \u2013 yes, they were all men \u2013 in just a handful of bands.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-and-the-instrument-at-the-heart-of-the-prog-sound-was\">And the instrument at the heart of the prog sound was&#8230;<\/h2><p>Outstanding craftsmanship and technical gifts were a necessary match for the music\u2019s adventurous spirit. There was the dexterity and distinctively stylish sound of guitarists David Gilmour, Steve Hackett, Steve Howe and Robert Fripp. There was the outrageous facility and precision of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/jazz\/jazz-music-what-it-is-and-how-it-evolved\">jazz<\/a><\/strong>-honed drummers Phil Collins and Bill Bruford (who played with Yes, King Crimson and \u2013 briefly on tour \u2013 Genesis). And then there were the keyboardists.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"King Crimson - Moonchild (Including &quot;The Dream&quot; And &quot;The Illusion&quot;)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DnYDqv8-lJE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>If many associate rock music with the dominating forces of strutting singer and scene-stealing guitarist, the larger appeal of prog rock for many has always been the relative importance of those sat at the Hammond, Mellotron or synth. Genesis would be nothing without the bedrock of Tony Banks\u2019s compositional input and sound, and it was the infinite possibilities of those black and white keys that enabled him to create\u00a0his unique harmonic and textural world. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-prog-s-pomp-inevitably-invited-derision\">Prog\u2019s pomp inevitably invited derision<\/h2><p>Rick Wakeman\u2019s often virtuosic contributions to Yes had maximum impact, and Keith Emerson\u2019s dexterous work with Emerson, Lake &amp; Palmer (ELP) \u2013 perhaps, too often, a triumph of display over substance \u2013 was remarkable. In contrast, Richard Wright\u2019s Pink Floyd input was far less showy, but crucial to their less-is-more sound.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2024\/08\/Untitled-design-61.jpg\" alt=\"David Gilmour and Pink Floyd, 1971\" class=\"wp-image-210004\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">David Gilmour and Pink Floyd, Royaumont Abbey, France, 1971. Pic: Getty Images &#8211; Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Prog\u2019s pomp, theatricality and ambition inevitably laid itself open to derision, especially from the cooler crew. With the founder members of Genesis all coming from one of England\u2019s grandest private schools, Charterhouse, and with many other bands bringing into their work an earnest, educated, grammar school\/art college sensibility, this was not the kind of music that was going to get all the girls or be danced to. The 1984 \u2018mockumentary\u2019 <em>This Is Spinal Tap <\/em>isn\u2019t a singular pot-shot at Prog, but lands some blows hilariously well in that direction.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"This is Spinal Tap (1984) Trailer #1 | Movieclips Classic Trailers\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HsFm6Yk_HkE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-prog-and-classical-a-tapestry-of-influences\">Prog and classical: a tapestry of influences<\/h2><p>As for references to classical music itself, you\u2019ll find plenty in Prog Rock, from nuanced to plain obvious. ELP, above all, regularly plundered the classical repertoire for the likes of \u2018Fanfare for the Common Man\u2019 and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/alberto-ginastera\">Alberto Ginastera<\/a><\/strong>-inspired \u2018Toccata\u2019. Still alive when the songs were written, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/aaron-copland\">Copland<\/a><\/strong> and Ginastera were approached in person by ELP for permission to use their music, and both gave the resulting songs the thumbs up. (Would <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/modest-musorgsky\">Mussorgsky<\/a><\/strong> have been so in favour of ELP\u2019s \u2018The Great Gates of Kiev\u2019? Possibly not\u2026).\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/six-best-works-ginastera\">Six of the best: Ginastera works<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/five-essential-works-aaron-copland\">Five essential works by Aaron Copland<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>Of a similar ilk on Yes\u2019s 1971 <em>Fragile<\/em> album is \u2018Cans and Brahms\u2019, a solo keyboard take on the <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-does-allegro-mean-in-music\">Allegro<\/a><\/em><\/strong> third movement from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/johannes-brahms\">Johannes Brahms\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> Fourth Symphony. It\u2019s the handiwork of the Royal College of Music-educated Rick Wakeman, who has since described it as \u2018dreadful\u2019. <\/p><p>And while Pink Floyd steered clear of any such classical cover versions,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/tchaikovsky\">Tchaikovsky<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Fourth Symphony makes a brief appearance on <em>Wish You Were Here<\/em>. Floyd\u2019s Roger Waters would later tackle classical head on with his French Revolution opera<em> \u00c7a ira<\/em>; ditto Genesis\u2019s Tony Banks, with three orchestral suites, more of which shortly.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Emerson, Lake &amp; Palmer - Toccata (Official Audio)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZdSeNMlKTcA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>I still appreciate and adore this music as much as I do that of many classical composers. Some might say it\u2019s a case of arrested development \u2013 I often wonder whether, if I was rid of all the baggage of its associations, I would hear it afresh, and with the indifference, even horror, that someone like my wife hears it. But the best stuff \u2013 listed here in a very personal and no doubt contestable (sorry ELP and King Crimson) Top Ten \u2013 still absorbs and thrills. I hope that at least some of it might have the same effect for you too.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-prog-top-ten\">A prog top ten<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-yes-close-to-the-edge-1972-18\"><strong>Yes<\/strong> &#8216;Close to the Edge&#8217; <em>(1972; 18\u2019)<\/em><\/h3><p>After an opening of particularly hardcore guitars\/keyboard interaction, this totemic track hits its stride with complexity and contrast. Part III is a showpiece for Rick Wakeman\u2019s spangly, caped-wizard act, including a grandiose organ climax dubbed in from London\u2019s St Giles Cripplegate church.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-genesis-dancing-with-the-moonlit-knight-1973-8\"><strong>Genesis<\/strong> &#8216;Dancing with the Moonlit Knight&#8217; <em>(1973; 8\u2019)<\/em><\/h3><p>Packed with taut and varied material, one of Genesis\u2019s finest co-written tracks \u2013 a compact journey of wistful Englishness, propulsive drive and dreamy 12-string guitar coda.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pink-floyd-echoes-1971-23\"><strong>Pink Floyd<\/strong> &#8216;Echoes&#8217;<em> (1971; 23\u2019)<\/em><\/h3><p>The lava-lamp indulgence of Pink Floyd\u2019s earlier, improv-hippie phase meets with a growing discipline in this languid, atmospheric forerunner to <em>Dark Side<\/em>. The central stretch of avant-garde soundscape is strikingly creepy and evocative \u2013 a trippy journey into prehistoric wastes.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pink Floyd - Echoes \/ Live at Pompeii ( full )\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PGwPSPIhohk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-genesis-a-trick-of-the-tail-1975-album\"><strong>Genesis<\/strong> <em>A Trick of the Tail<\/em> <em>(1975; album)<\/em><\/h3><p>The band\u2019s dazzling drummer Phil Collins steps up to frontman duty, and nails it \u2013 a more lyrical timbre than Peter Gabriel\u2019s distinctive rasp, and instantly showing emotional range and presence. Musically, things are moving on and already hinting at the stadium pop-rock success to come \u2013 but the entire album is still a mighty, progressive achievement.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-yes-awaken-1977-15\"><strong>Yes<\/strong> &#8216;Awaken&#8217; <em>(1977; 15\u2019)<\/em><\/h3><p>A very satisfying three-parter, where Wakeman\u2019s influence is strong \u2013 lots of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/johann-sebastian-bach\">Bachian<\/a><\/strong> church organ and background angelic voices \u2013 and where the expansive, metrically intricate climax returns affectingly to the opening.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pink-floyd-dark-side-of-the-moon-1973-album\"><strong>Pink Floyd<\/strong> <em>Dark Side of the Moon<\/em> <em>(1973; album)<\/em><\/h3><p>Famous for its Abbey Road engineering, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Musique_concr%C3%A8te\"><strong>musique <\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Musique_concr%C3%A8te\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>concr\u00e8te<\/strong><\/a><\/em> and conventional rock hits such as<em> \u2018<\/em>Time\u2019 and \u2018Money\u2019 (though in 7\/4 time), this definitive concept album also features an extraordinary improvisation from singer Clare Torry (\u2018Great Gig in the Sky\u2019) and an immaculate, looping synth solo in<em> \u2018<\/em>Any Colour You Like\u2019.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-genesis-firth-of-fifth-1973-9\"><strong>Genesis<\/strong> &#8216;Firth of Fifth&#8217; <em>(1973; 9\u2019)<\/em><\/h3><p>Tony Banks\u2019s solo career hasn\u2019t touched the commercial heights of his bandmates Gabriel or Collins, yet this solo-written number is one of the greats. It has rock music\u2019s best ever piano introduction, the band\u2019s most majestic guitar solo from Steve Hackett\u2026 and some of Gabriel\u2019s less distinguished circa Grade 6 flute playing.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Genesis - Firth Of Fifth\/I Know What I Like (When in Rome 2007)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PHYomj3Efnc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-genesis-the-lamb-lies-down-on-broadway-1974-album\"><strong>Genesis<\/strong> <em>The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974; album)<\/em><\/h3><p>The apogee of Genesis\u2019s prog rock ambitions, and singer Peter Gabriel\u2019s time to bow out. Harder-edged, and with moments of surreal experimentation, the sheer inventiveness and ambition is breathtaking. Not everyone\u2019s cup of tea, even among early Genesis fans, but still remarkable.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pink-floyd-shine-on-you-crazy-diamond-1975-26\"><strong>Pink Floyd<\/strong> &#8216;Shine On You Crazy Diamond&#8217; <em>(1975; 26\u2019)<\/em><\/h3><p>A spacious, classy tribute to Pink Floyd\u2019s departed founder\/bandmate Syd Barrett. Bookending the album <em>Wish You Were Here<\/em>, the pacing of often slow-moving material is impeccable, generating expansive instrumental stretches where keyboard player Rick Wright and guitarist David Gilmour are at their best.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-genesis-supper-s-ready-1972-24\"><strong>Genesis<\/strong> &#8216;Supper\u2019s Ready&#8217; <em>(1972; 24\u2019)<\/em><\/h3><p>A seven-part, through-written tour de force, displaying the group\u2019s full musical and technical range as it reached early maturity. Extraordinarily sophisticated music from five 21- and 22-year-olds. \u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-genesis-s-tony-banks-on-switching-from-prog-to-classical\">Genesis&#8217;s Tony Banks on switching from prog to classical<\/h2><p>What happens when, with 30 years as a successful rock musician behind you, you find your life at a bit of a pause?\u00a0<\/p><p>\u2018When we got to the end of our <em>Calling All Stations<\/em> tour in 1998, I thought, \u201cWhat am I going to do now?\u201d, says Tony Banks, founder member and keyboardist of Genesis. \u2018I\u2019ve always loved classical music and wanted to do something with orchestra for a while, partly inspired by working with composer Christopher Palmer on the soundtrack of the film <em>The Wicked Lady<\/em> (1983). At one point I was improvising a string sythesizer and came up with what became the piece <em>Black Down<\/em>, which I thought was really good. I had other bits which could go with it and I created a suite.\u2019<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tony Banks - Seven: A Suite for Orchestra - Black Down\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SU0UDPqZQq4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p><em>Seven \u2013 A Suite for Orchestra<\/em> was recorded by the London Philhamonic in 2002, proved a success, and has since been followed by <em>SIX Pieces for Orchestra<\/em> (2011) and <em>5 <\/em>(2019). As for Banks\u2019s composing style, hints of it can be found in his earlier Genesis days. <\/p><p>\u2018I am no respecter of keys! I like moving about.
