Here, we&#8217;ll take a look at the genesis of the original piano piece &#8211; and some of its finest recordings. <\/p><ul><li><strong>More recommendations for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/\">best recordings of the greatest classical works<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-mussorgsky-s-pictures-at-an-exhibition-about\">What is Mussorgsky&#8217;s <em>Pictures at an Exhibition<\/em> about?<\/h2><p>Written in 1874, <i>Pictures at an Exhibition <\/i>is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/modest-musorgsky\/\">Mussorgsky\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> only piano masterpiece: a tribute to his deceased friend, the artist and architect <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Viktor_Hartmann\">Viktor Hartmann<\/a><\/strong>. The suite of extraordinarily vivid miniature tone poems was composed after visiting a display of Hartmann&#8217;s work at the Imperial Academy of Arts\u00a0in\u00a0Saint Petersburg &#8211; not long after the artist&#8217;s sudden death. <\/p><p>Ten musical \u2018pictures\u2019, suggested by Hartmann\u2019s, are interspersed with \u2018promenades\u2019 leading from painting to painting. From children playing in the gardens of the Tuileries to a catacomb of skulls; from unhatched chicks to Russian folklore\u2019s chief witch, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Baba-Yaga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Baba Yaga<\/strong><\/a>, all of life is here. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-two-ways-to-hear-pictures-at-an-exhibition\">Two ways to hear <em>Pictures<\/em> <em>at an Exhibition<\/em><\/h2><p>There are two performing traditions: one pays scrupulous attention to the text; the other freely \u2018pianostrates\u2019 it (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/vladimir-horowitz-through-eyes-todays-pianists\/\"><strong>Vladimir Horowitz\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> term) with extra effects. What\u2019s vital is that the pianist is true to Mussorgsky\u2019s spirit, steeped in Russian 19th-century Realism. That spirit makes <i>Pictures<\/i> a gift to an imaginative performer.<\/p><p>This great work was later orchestrated by various composers. The most famous orchestration was made by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/maurice-ravel\">Maurice Ravel<\/a><\/strong> in 1922. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/who-was-sir-henry-wood\">Sir Henry Wood<\/a><\/strong>, founder of the Proms, had previously made an orchestration in 1915 &#8211; but when he heard Ravel&#8217;s transcription, he found it so superior that he wouldn&#8217;t allow his own orchestration to be performed!<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/best-transcriptions\">Five of the best transcriptions, featuring Chopin, Rachmaninov and more<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>By the way, you can hear the <strong>orchestral <\/strong>version of <em>Pictures at an Exhibition<\/em> at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/bbc-proms\/2024-bbc-proms-listings\">2024 BBC Proms<\/a><\/strong>. It&#8217;s being performed by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and conductor Kazuki Yamada for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/bbc-proms-today-22-august-2024\">Prom 43<\/a><\/strong> (Thursday 22 August). <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-best-recording-of-pictures-at-an-exhibition\">What is the best recording of <em>Pictures at an Exhibition<\/em>?<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sviatoslav-richter-the-sofia-recital-1958\">Sviatoslav Richter: The Sofia Recital (1958)<\/h3><p><em>Phillips 464-7342<\/em><\/p><p>The recording of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/listen\/podcast\/bbc-music-cover-cd-sviatoslav-richter\/\"><strong>Sviatoslav Richter<\/strong><\/a>, live in recital in Sofia in 1958, is a legend, and with good reason. Sound quality is poor \u2013 rumbly, crackly, audience-laden \u2013 but there\u2019s an overriding sense that we\u2019re witnessing Richter manage that extreme rarity: the realising of an ideal. <\/p><p>This towering Russian pianist made it his mission to convey Mussorgsky exactly as written, but to embody in his performance of the unadulterated score all the emotion and philosophical great-heartedness that others try to achieve through embellishment.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mussorgsky \/ S Richter, Sofia, 1958: Pictures At An Exhibition - Original Vinyl LP Recording\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CitIXrkQfzo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-some-of-the-most-extraordinary-piano-playing-you-could-hope-to-hear\">&#8216;Some of the most extraordinary piano playing you could hope to hear&#8217;<\/h3><p>His interpretation offers what the filmmaker Bruno Monsaingeon described as a \u2018wild and intractable purity\u2019. It\u2019s some of the most extraordinary piano playing you could hope to hear. His \u2018Catacombs\u2019 magically transforms every chord into a great cave, seeming to achieve that supposed pianistic impossibility, a <i>crescendo<\/i> in mid-resonance.<\/p><p><strong>Read more about the great Russian composers<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/pyotr-ilyich-tchaikovsky\/\">Tchaikovsky<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/igor-stravinsky\/\">Stravinsky<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/dmitri-shostakovich\/\">Shostakovich<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/sergey-prokofiev\/\">Prokofiev<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/alexander-borodin\/\"><strong>Borodin<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>\u2018Baba Yaga\u2019 has a terrifying, pagan, monolithic power \u2013 contrast this with the delicacy of the unhatched chicks and the innocence of the Tuileries children. In the grand finale, the radiant carillon of Kiev and the evocation of Russian orthodox choirs behind cathedral screens are unforgettable. There\u2019s a conceptual scale to Richter that goes beyond what most pianists can imagine.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-three-more-great-recordings-of-pictures-at-an-exhibition\">Three more great recordings of <em>Pictures at an Exhibition<\/em><\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-vladimir-horowitz-1948\">Vladimir Horowitz (1948)<\/h3><p><i>RCA Red Seal 88697538852<\/i><\/p><p>Next is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/vladimir-horowitz-through-eyes-todays-pianists\/\"><strong>Vladimir Horowitz<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Richter\u2019s nemesis. It was largely due to his influence that so many pianists muck about with the score (\u2018They said I put graffiti on Mussorgsky, but I don\u2019t give a damn,\u2019 Horowitz once remarked.). In his historic live performance at Carnegie Hall in 1948, his intensity sweeps all before it as he extends the music\u2019s range at the piano\u2019s extremities \u2013 and centre \u2013 from the first Promenade.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition, Horowitz (1947) \u30e0\u30bd\u30eb\u30b0\u30b9\u30ad\u30fc \u5c55\u89a7\u4f1a\u306e\u7d75 \u30db\u30ed\u30f4\u30a3\u30c3\u30c4\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j5brfrxaLD8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>\u2018Gnomus\u2019 and \u2018Bydlo\u2019 become terrifying invocations, the former laden with extra rumblings and carved-out detail, the latter showing every gradation of <i>crescendo<\/i> and <i>diminuendo<\/i>. He conjures impressions of infinite instrumentation \u2013 try his second Jew, Schmuyle, whose tone is a trumpet despite the piano. Baba Yaga flies with demoniac glee, causing mayhem and mutiny; and when the bells ring over the Great Gate it\u2019s as if you\u2019re up in the tower beside them.<\/p><ul><li><strong>Horowitz featured highly in our list of the 20<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/20-greatest-pianists-all-time\">greatest pianists of all time<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mikhail-pletnev-2000\">Mikhail Pletnev (2000)<\/h3><p><i>Virgin Classics 482 0552<\/i><\/p><p>Mikhail Pletnev\u2019s recording is an account of staggering imagination and sonic manipulation that leaves most others dithering at the starting line. His pedalling is especially astounding, extending sonorities from the end of one section beneath great chunks of what follows, without creating actual mess.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition Mikhail Pletnev\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BMg_A8eYweY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>His distortion of the bells in \u2018The Great Gate of Kiev\u2019 will either seriously unsettle you or leave you gasping. Yet there\u2019s something so icily detached about him that the whole impression is nearly clinical \u2013 magnificent though the playing is, he seems to lack the essential humanity that\u2019s amply present in Horowitz and Richter.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-vladimir-ovchinnikov-1990\">Vladimir Ovchinnikov (1990)<\/h3><p><i>Piano Classics PCL0004 <\/i><\/p><p>Beyond the three recordings so far mentioned here lies a plethora of accounts that I\u2019d hate to describe as \u2018lesser\u2019. I love Lazar Berman\u2019s deep, rich, compassionate account, Rudolf Firkusny\u2019s magisterial concert from 1980, and the mercurial Shura Cherkassky recorded live at the Wigmore Hall aged 73. <\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/leif-ove-andsnes-new-beethoven-documentary\/\"><strong>Leif Ove Andsnes<\/strong><\/a> \u2018pianostrates\u2019 extensively in his \u2018Pictures Reframed\u2019, but does so with flair and originality. Among younger musicians, Sa Chen offers impressive range. <\/p><p>Still, I\u2019d single out Vladimir Ovchinnikov \u2013 a one-time top prizewinner at the Leeds and Tchaikovsky international competitions, he\u2019s shockingly underrated today.
