His varied compositions reveal the thrill and pain of being an outsider \u2013 many are testament to his intersecting identity. In an unusual triumvirate of talents, Eastman (1940-90) was a composer, musical performer and a dancer. Read on to learn more about this leftfield but important 20th-century composer.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-was-julius-eastman\">Who was Julius Eastman?<\/h2><p>In 1940 Julius Eastman was born in the town of Ithaca, New York, where he lived with his mother and younger brother. He showed musical talent from a young age and sang in various choirs.<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-he-would-repeat-entire-stories-word-for-word-from-the-age-of-two\">&#8216;He would repeat entire stories word-for-word from the age of two&#8217;<\/h4><p>His parents separated when he was a child and he lived with his mother, Frances, and brother, Gerald (\u2018Gerry\u2019). Frances noticed unusual behaviour in the infant Julius, who would repeat entire stories word-for-word from the age of two and was strongly independent. She also reports that as soon as he began piano lessons, it took considerable effort to prise him away from the instrument. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Open Ears: Julius Eastman\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7ki1vGTcoLo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>By his teens, Eastman was good enough to accompany dance classes at the Iris Barbura Studio. Encouraged by staff, the young pianist began taking ballet lessons himself. Eventually, he composed a ballet, <em>Vergiu\u2019s Dance<\/em>, which was dedicated to the dance instructor Vergiu Cornea. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-less-than-meticulous-with-time-management\">&#8216;Less than meticulous with time management&#8217; <\/h2><p>After an unsuccessful audition for Rosina Lh\u00e9vinne (previously teacher to the legendary American pianist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/van-cliburn-1934-2013\">Van Cliburn<\/a><\/strong>) at New York&#8217;s revered <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/the-juilliard-school-history-and-famous-alumni\">Juilliard School<\/a><\/strong>, Eastman entered the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia on a full scholarship in 1959. Though he initially studies piano under Mieczys\u0142aw Horszowski, he later turned his attention to composition.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/these-are-the-best-music-colleges-in-the-us\">These are the best music colleges in the US<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p>The turning point in Eastman&#8217;s career came in 1968, when composer Lukas Foss recruited him as a creative associate at the University of Buffalo, where he worked closely with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/morton-feldman\">Morton Feldman<\/a><\/strong>, Petr Kotik and others. He also taught for a period at the university where, although popular with some students, he was less than meticulous with time management, administration, teaching and most other essential skills needed to be a successful professor. His contract was not renewed. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rubbing-shoulders-with-the-american-avant-garde\">Rubbing shoulders with the American avant-garde<\/h2><p>Although primarily a pianist, Eastman was frequently in demand as a singer, thanks to his intense, flexible <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/best-baritones\">baritone<\/a><\/strong> and dramatic (if unpredictable) stage presence. In 1970, he impressed internationally with his performance as King George III in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/sir-peter-maxwell-davies\">Peter Maxwell Davies<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s music-theatre piece <em>Eight Songs for a Mad King<\/em>. <\/p><p>He reprised the role several times, including with the New York Philharmonic under <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/pierre-boulez\">Pierre Boulez<\/a><\/strong>, and made a benchmark recording with Maxwell Davies himself. Around the same time, Eastman\u2019s own compositions were attracting critical acclaim. He joined the now-legendary Center for the Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Buffalo, whose alumni include the composers Frederic Rzewski, Terry Riley and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/george-crumbs-best-works-explore-the-experimental-composer-through-the-finest-recordings-of-his-music\">George Crumb<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/kronos-quartet\">Kronos Quartet: the American string quartet celebrating 50 years of sonic adventures<\/a><\/strong> <\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-happened-between-john-cage-and-julian-eastman\">What happened between John Cage and Julian Eastman?<\/h2><p>Eastman\u2019s chamber group, the SEM Ensemble, were leaders in what we now recognise as avant-garde classical music. The foremost avant-garde composer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/john-cage\">John Cage<\/a><\/strong> requested that the group perform his <i>Song Books<\/i> at the 1975 edition of June in Buffalo. This was a festival established by Feldman and modelled on the Darmstadt Summer Course, then the epicentre of new music. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Julius Eastman (1940-1990) - Buddha, with original manuscript score.\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KIO1vd__zcE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>By this point, Eastman himself had left SEM, but he agreed to return to the ensemble for the engagement. While Eastman\u2019s music may have been relegated to a footnote in musical history for several decades, his 1975 <i>Song Books<\/i> performance has long been the stuff of legend. (Kyle Gann writes that he was recently regaled with the Eastman-Cage anecdote by some students. When they had finished, he smiled and replied: \u2018Yeah, I was there\u2019.) <\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eastman-presented-an-explicit-talk-about-sex\">&#8216;Eastman presented an explicit talk about sex&#8217;<\/h4><p>The score for <i>Song Books<\/i> comprises \u2018instructions\u2019, graphics and conventional staff notation. All parts must be prepared individually without reference to other performers, so that the first time the solos come together is on stage. Eastman interpreted the instruction \u2018give a lecture\u2019 to present an explicit talk about sex, undressing a man in front of the audience and attempting to do the same to a woman. <\/p><p>Cage was furious. Yet one might point out that surely this is the very essence of chance performance. Eastman certainly thought so. Either way, the concert severed ties with Cage and many in the new music scene.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-unique-talent-but-a-difficult-man-to-work-with\">A unique talent&#8230; but a difficult man to work with<\/h2><p>Eastman\u2019s living conditions became increasingly precarious. Uninterested in possessions (both his or others\u2019), he frequently left his apartment unlocked and was soon burgled. His uncompromising views, linked to his own brand of spirituality and non-conforming behaviour, made it difficult for people to support him. <\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-smearing-dirt-over-piano-keys-to-improve-traction\">&#8216;Smearing dirt over piano keys to improve traction&#8217;<\/h4><p>There are many painful accounts in the Eastman biography <i>Gay Guerrilla<\/i> that illustrate this: from the composer&#8217;s refusal to lock the music room door in a community school that offered him use of a piano, to wrapping a stray cat in a piece of textile art (that didn\u2019t belong to him) and smearing dirt over piano keys to improve traction (great for technique; terrible for the instrument).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Julius Eastman: Gay Guerrilla at Kunsthalle Basel\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MQboVHbJw9c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>Eastman&#8217;s approach to professional engagements was equally radical. He once appeared, mid-performance, from behind his music stand with his face painted silver, much to the consternation of the surprised director. <\/p><p>Another time, he walked on stage during a recital to whisper something to the pianist. Later, it transpired he had asked the soloist if he would buy him a bottle of wine after the concert; rather than berate Eastman for the inappropriate timing, the kindly pianist made the purchase. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-did-julius-eastman-die\">How did Julius Eastman die?<\/h2><p>Eastman continued to compose when circumstances allowed. Manuscripts for many of his later works, however, are incomplete. One of his major works, the Symphony No. II <em>The Faithful Friend: The Lover Friend\u2019s Love for the Beloved<\/em>, was completed by the Italian musician Luciano Chessa as recently as 2018. <\/p><p>It is suspected that many scores may have been destroyed when Eastman was evicted from his flat in the early 1980s. There was a brief period when he sought help, had some therapy sessions and got a job working at Tower Records (it\u2019s highly likely he suffered from at least one mental illness but nothing was formally diagnosed or at least recorded.) <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Julius Eastman: Gay Guerrilla (1979) 1\/2\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pdeckwHGoog?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>One day, Eastman didn\u2019t show up for his shift \u2013 with the exception of a couple of chance encounters, that was the last time anyone saw him. The official reason for his death was cardiac arrest. The performers are the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/bbc-symphony-orchestra\">BBC Symphony Orchestra<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and conductor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/dalia-stasevska\"><strong>Dalia Stasevska<\/strong><\/a>, and the performance is part of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/bbc-proms-today-24-august-2024\">Prom 45<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(Saturday 24 August).<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-i-am-trying-to-be-what-i-am-to-the-fullest\">&#8216;I am trying to be what I am to the fullest&#8217;<\/h2><p>In a 1976 interview with <i>Buffalo Evening News<\/i>, Eastman clearly explained his <i>raison d\u2019\u00eatre<\/i>: \u2018What I am trying to achieve is to be what I am to the fullest \u2013 black to the fullest, a musician to the fullest, a homosexual to the fullest.\u2019 He embraced his colour and sexuality in his work with raucous confidence, frequently \u2013 and often intentionally \u2013 offending collaborators and audiences. Eastman openly satirised the complex intersectionality of his life, most notably in what he referred to as his \u2018N*gger\u2019 series of compositions.<\/p><p>In a spoken instruction to a 1980 performance at Northwestern University \u2013 given in lieu of a printed programme, due to complaints by faculty staff and students \u2013 Eastman gives a compelling defence of his titles <i>Evil N*gger<\/i> and <i>Crazy N*gger<\/i>. These pieces, alongside <i>Gay Guerrilla<\/i> (1979), <i>N*gger F*ggot<\/i> and <i>Dirty N*gger<\/i> (both 1978), use harmonic series in a similar way to early <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/philip-glass\">Philip Glass<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/steve-reich\"><strong>Steve Reich<\/strong><\/a>, but with a much richer structure. <\/p><ul><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/composers\/the-brilliance-of-philip-glass-seven-leading-musicians-discuss-his-style-and-influence\">The brilliance of Philip Glass<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-julius-eastman-a-composer-of-bold-futuristic-talents\">Julius Eastman: a composer of bold, futuristic talents<\/h2><p>As American critic and composer Kyle Gann writes, \u2018today his pieces sound particularly distinctive, as though he had not only absorbed minimalism, but could see into its future\u2019. If the works had been given more generic titles (such as <i>Music in Twelve Parts<\/i>, <i>\u00e0 la<\/i> Glass), it\u2019s likely they would be regular fixtures on streaming playlists where this genre thrives.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The (Nearly) Forgotten Father Of Minimalist Music\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ufa5U4S-g6M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>It is thanks to a small but dedicated group of musicians that we are beginning to piece together Eastman\u2019s back catalogue. In 1998, Mary Jane Leach looked for a copy of <i>The Holy Presence of Joan d\u2019Arc<\/i> to use in class as an example of a work for multiple instruments. Leach had attended the premiere of the work in 1981 and \u2018its energy and sound left a big impression\u2019. <\/p><p>Her search for a recording turned into a seemingly endless treasure hunt (Leach refers to herself as an \u2018accidental musicologist\u2019), culminating in the first commercial recording release of Eastman\u2019s work \u2013 <i>Unjust Malaise<\/i>. It\u2019s thanks to Leach and collaborators that we have been given a second chance to reappraise Eastman\u2019s music \u2013 something that was too often denied to a composer of such bold, futuristic talents.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-julius-eastman-a-style-guide\">Julius Eastman: a style guide<\/h2><p>Here are five themes of Eastman&#8217;s adventurous and individual musical idiom to listen out for.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-group highlight-box is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-music-for-multiples\"><strong>Music for multiples<\/strong><\/h3><p>Several of Eastman\u2019s works are intended for any group of identical instruments, with up to 18 players. The ensuing harmonic overtones (evident when the instruments slip into unison) are a key characteristic. Kukuruz Quartet have shown how well this music works for four pianos.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Julius Eastman's Symphony No. II (Excerpt)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sqXW6xxDB8Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-organic-music\"><strong>Organic music<\/strong><\/h3><p>\u2018There is an attempt to make every section contain all the information of the previous section, or else take out information at a gradual and logical rate,\u2019 said Eastman of his harmonic language. He called this approach \u2018organic\u2019 music, a style that foreshadowed popular Minimalism.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pluralism\"><strong>Pluralism<\/strong><\/h3><p>By day, Eastman was a contemporary classical devotee, but at night he performed underground dance with Arthur Russell and jazz with his guitarist brother Gerry. His compositions reflect these disparate styles, with pieces such as <em>Stay On It<\/em> and <em>Femenine<\/em> featuring extended sections for improvisation. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-identity\"><strong>Identity<\/strong><\/h3><p>Many of Eastman\u2019s titles reflect his struggles and satisfaction in being a black gay composer.
